How long have the protests from pro-union workers been going on outside the Cosmo? Coming to Vegas soon and I am curious. Let's hope they don't last as long as they did at the Frontier.....ugh. Thanks.:peace:

I am not sure but I stayed on the 31st floor in late August, early September and I could hear those assholes from my room. Repeating the same thing - over and over and over and over again.

Encountered them later that day on the bridge between Crystals and Cosmo. They were yelling at everyone walking in to not stay or do anything there. Some of them were getting a little in our face and some of us went right back at them (obviously some of us a little tipsy).

They are a nuisance as far as I am concerned. I am on vacation so I am really not interested nor am I concerned about whatever health benefits they are not receiving (or if it is something different...I simply do not care and I am not going to be sensitive to it). There are different ways to accomplish that than to accost people walking in and out of the place or disrupting those staying.

We discussed it with some of the bartenders and I dont think they gave a rats ass about them either. I wouldn't be so peeved if they didn't disrupt sleep or harass people who DO NOT work for the company.

I just noticed them on my most recent trip three weeks back. It was just a group of 30 or so. I didn't pay attention to what what's going on with them. However on my trip before that I saw a group outside Paris maybe 200 deep. Yelling and chanting. It would have kept me up but I don't sleep in vegas.

Man, since August? I saw a news clip of them on TV, they looked pretty out of control. I'll make a note to totally avoid that place on my November visit. I also hear they have lousy BJ games, so no big loss.

They started heckling me and calling me names.

Ironically, I was just walking through, but since they decided to treat me like shit, I decided to stop at Holsteins and have a great lunch.

If there was some sort of real issue, I might have been sympathetic, but they just want to unionize a workforce that has little desire to become union.

I went to YouTube to see what the fuss was all about. Looks like some of them have their kids with them.
And I'm not hearing much English. Most likely these individuals are paid to protest on the Union's behalf.

Normally, I have no problems with organizing and unions, but these folks are gettin' outta control. It's becoming quite a topic on the news in Las Vegas and whatever sympathy anyone had for their "plight" has worn off. Calling tourists, you know the people that pay the bills in this state, "ugly losers" and worse is just plain stupid... nothing like chasing your customes away!

For the first time in a long time, I actually want to give Cosmo my business... just to spite these people.

On my very first trip to Vegas, I was drunk wandering past the Frontier and really had to pee. I saw a door and a restroom sign not too far inside and made a dash for the door. I didn't even see the picketers, but I did her one guy yell at me - "Hey, thanks for crossing the line, you fat c**t!"

As a tourist, I was offended that I was just looking for a place to empty my bladder and was spoken to like that. I might have been sympathetic to whatever they were picketing about, but instantly I wished that they'd all lose their jobs and the Frontier would crumble into a pile of dust.

    Hmm... I win. :wink2:

if you were angry at those insulting you that is not exactly what you should have wished for

the issue is now (with Cosmo) and was (with the Frontier) that the people that are/were actually working those properties are non-union and the union does not like that those people are non-union

so wishing the people working at the Frontier (back then) or at the Cosmo now would lose their jobs and the hotel crumbles is not harming the people out front acting like animals it is helping them

the people protesting seem to believe that those working at non-union properties are not free to, or capable of, looking out for or thinking for themselves and deciding if they want to work those jobs for the wages and benefits offered and they need the union to come in and save them from themselves

there may be a very very few of the protesters that are employees of that property being protested, but they would generally be the least vocal since being at or near your place of employment, even on your off time, and insulting customers is probably a reason to be no longer employed

most of the protestors are not even employees of any property, union or not, and many of them are not even union members they are under paid and non-benefit temp agency hired stooges with a few union employees (actual employees of the union itself not union members employed at any casino or hotel property) mixed in to scream insults and feign violence

your perception of the situation is exactly what the protestors want people to think.....oh look at all those poor under paid and subjugated employees that have to stand in the street and scream obscenities at the customers of their place of employment to try and get a living wage and benefits.......when the truth is the vast majority of employees of those properties do not want a union and they are either inside working at the job they choose to work at of their own fruition or they are at home or elsewhere on their days off doing something else productive with their life

those outside protesting have next to nothing to do with anyone or anything at that property other than wanting to get them in a union to increase their intake of dues and their membership ranks and again most of them are not even employees of any other hotel property or actual union members (and they are not making close to union wages or benefits for standing out there)

I hope this was not too "political" and I was going to refrain from making a remark in this thread, but since you the forum owner did and you had the very common misconception that you were insulted by actual Frontier employees (VS those that have nothing to do with actual Frontier employees) I decided to comment

these protest are not the same as a company that is already union having their employees go on strike because the company and the union cannot agree on a new wage and benefit package......these protest (Frontier and Cosmo) are protest that the companies are simply not union companies and thus do not negotiate with the unions at all for anything (although the Cosmo and union both say they talk as the Frontier and the union also said)

now in the future there could be some protest at CET and MGM and other properties that are union that will be employees of those properties that are union members protesting their actual place of employment because there is currently no long term union deal in place and the are only working under short term extensions, but that is not what is happening at Cosmo or was happening at the Frontier

Anytime a Union stages an "information" picket or line, the public's perception to their plight is crucial to them getting their point across. If they come about as loud, obnoxious, and insulting, they lose their integrity as a professional organization and gain no respect.

In this particular case it seems the leadership of this union is clearly jeopardizing their public image and will gain no sympathy in their cause. And it's too late, they have lost the battle with what-ever issue they had with the Cosmo. Plain stupid on their part.

I am a Union member and I wouldn't hesitate to let my leaders know how I feel if this kind of behavior is displayed in public. I would refuse to participate in this kind of un-professional behavior.

I agree with your post. It seems like (some) unions in this country have failed to evolve with the rest of society. This type of intimidation and agressive protesting may have worked 50 years ago, but it's ineffective now. This is proven by the fact that almost every poster in this thread has stated they will go out of their way to patronize the Cosmo now (or already did), as a result of the Union's disrespectful actions.

I saw a 2 minute clip on youtube about the Cosmo. It made me sick to my stomach. Calling a young woman an "ugly loser" because she walked into the Cosmo? If somebody called my wife an ugly bitch as we were walking in, I would take their picket sign and snap it over my knee.

Good post here and I agree with everything you wrote. I have every right to patronize any business establishment that I so choose. I also have every right to avoid those places that I so choose to avoid. If somebody is calling me and other innocent, law abiding citizens, names simply because we exercise our right to patronize a business, then I am going to be alot less likely to empathize with their cause. In this instance, thugs yelling obscenities at tourists, many of whom are just walking around taking in the sites on the strip, dont deserve such abhorrant treatment. And that behavior makes most people want to do exactly the opposite of its desired effect. I dont even like the Cosmo but I plan to go gamble there next trip just to spite these assholes.

There was a shit ton of them protesting on Friday around noon. Looked like it would be a pain in the ass if you were staying there.
