The only other time I've arrived in Vegas close to midnight was a few years ago staying at MGM and we got the crappiest room imaginable. We got one of the old, non-renovated rooms in a hidden hallway right off the casino floor.

Every time we stay at the Mirage we get a crappy view, of the roof usually. Even when arriving early in the day.

Our plane lands at 11pm on Thursday night and I don't want another crappy view/room.

Have you had any success in calling the front desk ahead of time to ask them to pre-block your room? Did they actually do it?

I usually dont have a problem and I always arrive late so I can still work that day.

the only people who have the ability to pre-block your room are hosts. if the front desk could do that, everyone would call and get the best room.

the biggest factor is what type of room you have reserved. if you have their base level room, those are going to be ones on lower floors without a view. the ones on higher floors with a view are billed as premium and sold separately. so unless you already booked that, you're just hoping to get an upgrade, which is hit and miss. it's just a matter of how busy they are that weekend and how generous the person at check-in is feeling.

Keep your fingers crossed. The only time I ever arrived in Vegas that late was about three and a half years ago staying at Paris. I had requested a non-smoking room, but they were entirely out. So instead, they bumped me up to a red room at no additional charge. Sadly, it was the only good luck I experienced that entire trip, lol

Some of my best rooms have been when I arrived late at night, usually between 9 and 1 am. I guess they ran out of regular and I got premium. Unfortunately, I've usually received the deer in the headlights look by the desk clerk, followed by that dreaded, "Uh … I'll be right back" as he disappeared into the mysterious backroom. It's always worked out great, however. So, from my experiences, arriving late isn't necessarily bad.

I disagree. Unless they are using some magical program where they can not assign rooms that is false. Front desk are usually the people who assign rooms. Even if they have a clerk who does that the front desk can still assign them.

Very few places assign rooms too much ahead of time but i worked at a hotel for a year and we did it the night before. It went in alphabetical order and once down the line if there were special requests i would change things around if i could.

When we went to Minneapolis this year i called a couple days ahead to make sure my requests were on the reservation and they assigned me a room right there that she thought fit my needs and i was happy with it once i got there.

    How were these rooms booked?

    3rd party?
    Comp?
    Discount?

I managed a front desk for years...although I was at an airport hotel, not Vegas...and I had the authority to pre block whoever I wanted into whatever I wanted whenever I wanted. BUT, like I said this is Vegas so I don't know how it goes. It's a base room, comped for a night...casino rate for 2 nights. It's a holiday weekend. (Columbus Day) I called casino marketing to ask them...and to make sure we have 2 beds, as I'm travelling with mom...he told me to call the morning of and they might be able to block the room. "might"

It would just be nice to finally have a good strip view after all of the times we have been there. I might try the $20 trick, which I don't try anymore at the Mirage because in past trips it hasn't worked but this time, maybe.

Back in 2000 arrived after midnight at NYNY. They no longer had the specific room reserved available (non-smoking, two double beds) and as a result gave me a king bed handicapped room.

The next day to make amends they upgraded to a suite for the rest of the stay.

In your circumstances I'd check back with the desk the next morning and ask to be moved to a different room. Even if the room is comped. If the level of room is ok but a specific room is not to your liking then moving to another room of the same level isn't an unreasonable request. Worse case, they say no and they know that will likely effect your future choices on where to stay.

A couple years ago, I arrived at Mirage really late (after midnight) on a Friday night mid-Spring break. Unsurprisingly, I got a room on the fourth floor with a view of the roof. I also had requested two beds, and they were unable to accommodate me, so they sent up a roll-away and gave me a 50 F/B credit to use to apologize. We moved the next day to the 23rd floor, but it was a pain to have to fool with moving because they took forever to do it and we were only there for the weekend. Nowadays I would've just stuck with the fourth floor view to avoid the hassle.

As part of the price/reservation discussion, I was there on a marketing comp for a regular room.

Once, only once have we done a late arrival and it was a disaster.
It was also at MGM and the experience was so terrible it prompted me to write a letter as soon as I got home.

It ruined our trip that we will never risk a late arrival again and have only done early flights since then.

I've had a couple different experiences...
Sams Town - got upgraded to Park View
    LVH - East Tower...but it was a 2 double/handicapped room.
MSS - don't matter cuz they really don't have any "better" rooms

All have been comp via mailers..

I don't recall ever having an issue... one time many may years ago on my first Vegas trip we got upgraded these huge suites at MGM because they were out of normal rooms haha.

Also, these days, how often are these hotels at 100% capacity? I don't imagine you'd have much of an issue. If you are really concerned book a room with a view or an upgraded room, everything is a different category these days anyways at most of the large resorts, double beds, views, high floor.. every hotel has a million categories to book. If you book the plain king, lowest tier room, you are rolling the dice probably on location.

Make sure your late arrival is noted. The last 2 hotel rooms I booked on the phone they specifically asked when I was expecting to arrive.

I've had great luck with late arrivals.

About 5 years ago arrived at Mandalay Bay at about 2:00 am. Had a room reserved ($59/night) for 3 nights. When checking us in, they said that the hotel was full, and there were only 2 choices - wait for them to clean a room, or take a Media Suite. Naturally, we took the Media Suite (which goes for about $1000/night) and enjoyed 3 days in luxury!

The other upgrade was not as great - got a Ziggurat Suite upon arrival at NYNY at about 1:00 am (instead of standard comp room) for one night. This was early in my Vegas trips (about number 3 or so - it was pretty exciting!)

So, sometimes empty rooms/length of stay/date of arrival makes a difference.

This has been my experience, Vegas or not.

Often, you can get a room change after one day.

The last two of our trips we arrived very late.

Cosmo - we arrived around 11:30pm, super nice clerk (Kevin) gave us a terrace with a view - right over Bellagio fountains. Originally booked thru VIP services (comp) for a standard king terrace.

Aria - arrived at 11:45pm, had booked 3 nights, 2 of them comped. Booked again thru VIP services. When we arrived we got high floor, w/a strip view. When we checked in I mentioned to the clerk I whoever I spoke with said they would try to put us in a great room, the clerk says "Wow - they held one of the best (non-suite) rooms in the house for you!

OF course when checking in I am very polite, don't make any demands and let them know I understand it's late and I appreciate everything. ( You get so much more with kindness, understanding and a big smile!).

    Good luck!!

Thanks for all of the replies guys! I will call the desk on Thursday morning and see what they say. I really don't think there are any
"bad" rooms at the Mirage (unlike that hell hole we had in the bowels of the MGM) it's just the 2 bed preference that we would really need and the view/floor is really just something we would like.

I was curious to see what your experiences have been in the past, it seems like a mixed bag. Who knows!

I'm arriving at Harrah's at 10pm on Monday 28th October for a couple of nights (staying at a friends house after that) - hope they give me whatever their equivalent of a luxurious room is.
