We're already booked..trip is Oct 23-26, Harrahs comped river view central tower. Group is myself, 45, Hubby 46, BIL 48 and SIL 49. We've done Vegas about 6 times and have found ourselves gravitating toward Fremont area, fits our style..low roller, like to drink, dance, people watch. We decided on meeting in Laughlin this trip to try something new. Flying into Vegas and renting car, driving down. This part I'm looking forward to! Any tips on great little stops on the drive down? We're not thinking this is Vegas by any means. Like to gamble a little, walk around, meet interesting people. Any tips, secrets, must do's are most welcome!! We'll have a car the whole trip. I'm just happy to be escaping the impending rain and clouds rolling into our beloved PacNW for a few days! What's the weather like in late Oct?

Turn around and gravitate back to Fremont. In Laughlin you've got long walks between casinos and you'll be the youngest ones there.

Its disturbingly unworthwhile unless you just want to gamble and drink while you do it. jmho

There are a couple of stops along the drive. I am fond of stopping at the pseduo-casino in Searchlight for a beer at the bar. I didn't play video poker, I just bought a cheap beer in the middle of nowhere, and marveled at how crazy it is.

As for Laughlin, if you find much to do besides hang out in the casino, let me know. (I have a friend who goes on a golf trip to the Laughlin area in the winter, but I'm not a golfer, so that narrows down the possibilities for me.)

There are boat cruises and the London Bridge, that much I know, but I've never done either.

Weather should be mild. Low to mid 80s daytime.

Laughlin can be fun, particularly if you enjoy watersports. Rent a personal watercaft or pontoon boat and play on the river by day and play in the casino at night.

Be sure to visit the Colorado River Museum. There are some very interesting exhibits there and the docents can tell you some fascinating stories about the history of boating and shipping along the river dating back to the years long before it became dammed up.

Restaurants I would recommend. Mohave Steakhouse, Iguanas Mexican River Cantina, Colliano's, the Prime Rib Room at the Riverside Hotel and the Hickory Pit at the Edgewater Hotel.

Thanks for the input..being the youngest ones there would be a change!! We definitely like the water/river aspect and are looking forward to the water taxi and maybe a day cruise to the London Bridge. Also have heard Oatman might be a diversion for my ghost-town loving brother in law.

    Laughlin:

It's the only place I know where the buffets serve pureed foods.

I was amazed to find that that they had slot machines that paid out in Geritol.

At the bar, instead of orange juice, they serve the screwdrivers with prune juice.

Instead of toilet seat covers, the bathroom stalls have Depends dispensers.

It's not as old as everyone is saying, but it ain't young either. Many people retire to Bullhead City, so that and RV travelers tends to be a big part of the clientele.

There will be younger people on busy summer weekends, but it will be a slow pace at that time of year. Hopefully the weather will be nice, because the lake can be fun.

Oatman is about 45min from Laughlin, and the donkeys are fun.

You can actually walk along a path facing the river that connects the casinos. It's enjoyable if the weather is nice, but nothing like Fremont St.

I exclusively stay downtown Vegas. in fact, our last trip we didn't even venture to the strip. That being said, I prefer FSS over Laughlin (only my opinion). The casinos on FSS are easy to walk to compared to the Laughlin casinos. However, one day in Laughlin my friend and I did a side trip to Oatman. I would highly recommend this....interesting fun day with a scenic drive.

    Enjoy!
