    Hi all,

I'm heading to Montreal tomorrow for a conference and was wondering if anyone had any thoughts on what to do while there. I will have a little bit of free time. I already have a ticket to see a Canadiens game while there, so I'm looking forward to that. Otherwise, I'll be in the heart of downtown.

Have a Cuban cigar, go to Schwartz's for pastrami, just about all residents speak and understand English, but may choose not to just to bust your hump. Folks there are not overtly rude, they are Québécois and have a different way of thinking than Canadians or Americans. I work with several suppliers from Quebec and they all just have this unique combination of arrogance and indifference. Kind of like they are doing me a favor for letting me buy from them and don't ask about when my order will ship. Your milage may vary.

There is also the old city which is walled in, but I've never been. If you like Rye Whisky, I am a big fan of Alberta Premium which is unavailable in the States. Makes a wicked good Manhattan.

There are tons of things you can do in Montreal. Especially you are single. Please PM me because it would be a bad idea if I mention things publicly. LOL.

In comparison Montrealers are more friendlier to English speakers than the Quebecois even though Montreal is within the province of Quebec. I lived there for about three years and loved the city except for the brutal winters.

Definitely spend time walking around the old city (technically, "Old Montreal" and "Old Port"). It is not walled . Notre-Dame Basilica is in the old city and worth taking a tour.

Stroll down St. Catherine St. for shopping, food, some places that DMSCR will likely PM you about. good restaurants and clubs on Crescent just off St. Catherine.

Mount Royal Park is very nice to walk around in. Huge drum circle on the weekends. fun.

And of course, there is the casino. I am not a big fan of it (no drinking while gambling!!), but it does have a cool European feel.

If you want a great steak go to La Queue de Cheval. There is also Moishe's, which is old school. Schwartz's was mentioned and I agree, it's different than NY deli like Katz', more spicy.

    drink!!

the corner of st Catherine and Cresent street is a great starting point.
Brutopia is a bar you can check out a lot of great beers.

had one (long) session in there where we spent the afternoon with the owners, got drunk, one of the party was helped outside by the staff to be sick - and then back in to carry on drinking and finished up with us taking over the stage..... I have no idea why I was on stage - I can't sing....

I had a 16 hour layover in montreal this past june. unfortunately most of it was during the night so I didn't have a lot of time to roam around the city as much. I did have about 6 hours free (included travel time though) so I took the shuttle to downtown. walked around chinatown and had dinner there. There is also a shopping center that is enclosed and underground so if you are a woman you might like checking out the shopping center. If you are a guy there is a seedier side with clubs but other than walking past them I didn't go inside.

I saw directions to the casino but I thought it was too far to visit, plus I heard the many negatives about the place so I didn't visit.

seemed like a nice place to visit.

What ever you do no matter how hungry you are even if your life depends on it, do not ever eat the hotdogs next to Cleo's!

    You have been warned.

    And..... you're welcome!
