Coin Counting / Exchange Machines in Las Vegas?

Does anyone know if there are any casinos in Las Vegas (either on the strip, off strip, or downtown) that offer a self-service coin counting machine (like Coinstar)? I could have sworn that I've seen one or two in LV, although I may be thinking of a casino elsewhere. If there is someplace that still offers this service, do they keep a certain percentage of the total as a service fee, or does one receive the whole amount? I have lots of quarters and dimes that I'd like to apply toward my spending cash for an upcoming trip, and the bank won't accept them unless they're in the paper rolls. I wouldn't want to walk up to a casino cage and ask them to count and exchange a bundle full of coins, so I'd like to keep this as simple as possible.

Why not just go to a Coinstar before you leave for your trip instead of carrying around a ton of heavy change?

 

yes, those machines take a percentage and it's very high. you get totally raped IMO on those machines. how else do you think they pay for them?

That company was a good investment, I owned it in my PA years ago but haven't looked at it again since then so not sure if it still is.

Converting to cash on those isn't worth it. If you convert to any of the gift cards they offer you can get full face. Assuming you have good use for the gift card that is a no-brainer. Also ask your bank if any of their local branches has a coin machine. One of the banks I use has them in some locations and its free for their customers to use, you get full value. You just get a voucher from the machine and give it to the teller.

 

coinstar gives you 100% of the money IF you get the "cash" back in the form of a gift card that is usable at one of their vendor partners otherwise they take up to 9.8% and you have to cash the voucher at the location where you dump the coins

most of their vendor partners would not be that exciting to most people, but as of recently Southwest Airlines is one of those partners so you can get a gift card to use towards paying for a SWA airlines flight if that happens to be the airline that you use to get to Vegas

otherwise the fee is not worth it.....there are other vendor partners, but most are chain restaurants or Amazon or chain stores

look at the coinstar site for a complete list and how it works and perhaps you will find that SWA or one of the other retailers works for you

 

Going up to the casino cage is what you should do.

All the big casinos on The Strip, and presumably all the ones Downtown as well, still have change buckets and coin counting machines in the casino cage.

What you would do is go up to the casino cage and just ask for a coin bucket, they will give you one and then you just dump your change in to the bucket. Note that if your coins are rolled up you will need to unroll them and you just put all change in to one bucket as the machine will sort and count what you have.

Then when you go up to the cashier again you give them the coin bucket and they will dump it in to the counter. There is a little unit next to the cashier's window that will show you how much the machine counted and then they would give you that in bills.

And no, they don't keep any percentage, they give it all to you.

 

You can also buy them for cheap. I have seen them in the stores up here in canada so i am sure they have them down there somewhere too.

 

This, exactly. I use the Coinstar machines for Amazon.com gift certificates (they're often even better than Costco for deals on personal care and household items), and it's great.

As far as banks, I think TD Bank has coin counting machines in many of their locations, although according to the internet it's only free if you have an account.

 

Go to the casino cage and cash them in. If they don't have a coin counter, I assume they will tell you. I know just last trip I cashed in coins at Flamingo and have done so at many other properties.

 

Can't say about Vegas specifically, but the casino I work in does not accept coins at all. The only coins in the building are straight from the bank and they go into the tito cashing machines. Obviously the food places accept coins but the cage refuses to accept or exchange coins for cash. They say that is the way the industry is going

 

Most Wells Fargo bank branches have a coin machine and I've brought containers of change in and they have not asked me if I have an account there. I do, but they don't seem to care. No hold-back.

 

the cal and MSS downtown have coin machines that takes coins, the only problem is that the machines do not take certain denominations (like pennies). they basically take coins that are returned from the machines like quarters and nickels. I am not sure if those machines take dimes but I know they take quarters and nickels for sure. I think if you go to the cage they may not take pennies either. the MSS machines is next to the cashier cage. One machine at the cal is on the 2nd floor promenade near the bathrooms (near the escalator). pretty sure they give back 100% of your money.

I am lucky, my credit union has a coin machine that gives back 100% (as a service to credit union members). one day a non member tried to use the machines but the service person told the guy that the machines was only for CU members.

as others have mentioned, the coin star machines takes a cut but if you want a gift card they will give back 100% of your money. not a problem as the machine is at some supermarkets so I just get their gift card and use it when I shop at the supermarket.

 

M Resort has a CoinStar machine next to the main casino cage. Great place to pick up gift cards.

 

If it is a ton of coins which are unwrapped it may be difficult to get rid of them.
Even banks will take only so many unless they are wrapped.

Fill a suitcase and head to Vegas but you could still have issues.
First not all casinos will take the coins and the ones that do will do so only if you stay with them.

By the end of our trips we have a good amount of coins. When staying at NYNY they would only take the quarters and not dimes, nickles or pennies..WTF?!?!?!

At PH they simply ask if we are staying there and give you a nice plastic tray to dump in the coins after which they are dumped into the machine which prints out the total. The cashier gives back 100%. Better odds than at any table game or slots.

 

I throw all my change in a big empty peanut container. About twice a year my wife takes it to Coinstar to exchange for JC Penny gift card. No fee since she gets the card. Painless way to set-aside money for clothes.

 

Are there really that many people without bank accounts, dont all banks accept change from customers for free? And are there people who neither have an account nor know anyone with an account who could do it for them? hard to imagine.

 

The OP said they have a lot of loose coins and their bank won't take them unless they are rolled up.

 

Dragging them to Vegas is a bad story with a mixed ending.

Casino may not take them.

Your arm falls off from the weight.

Best bet is still to find a local machine and either suck up the 9% or get a gift card. We do the gift card thing.

By the way, ever notice casino change machines do not even give out dimes?
