How walkable?

Rio, Gold Coast, Palms? Trying to get my bearings because we've only stayed at Rio one night in the past. And also is there bus access from Rio to Downtown?

 

Very walkable. Unless you have mobility issues, you can get from any one to any other in, say, 10 min. We have j-walked from the Rio buffet door to the Gold Coast parking garage many times, but after getting across, I always think we should not have done it and just should have walked to the corner and used the light. We would never think of crossing Flamingo any where but the light-- traffic zips down that road. But I'd say, walk the sidewalks, take your time, and allow 10-12 min from one to the over. Actually, a nice little grouping of casinos.

 

Yes... very walkable! ... and as stated above, please don't j-walk. Vegas streets are wide and fast and people get nailed all the time. Even if you do make it... tons and I mean tons of tickets are given out for j-walking.

 

Agree! All the dead tourists who thought they could make it across the Strip are one of the main reasons we now have to put up with overhead walkways. And escalators that are broken more times then they are working. Just my opinion on that part.

I walked from Rio to Gold Coast in May for the buffet. And even though i chose not to visit Palms (i am a Lakers fan, i will never aid the enemy), it's very walk able as well (and i am a recovering stroke victim). In fact, walking from the Strip to Rio, Gold Coast, and Palms is walk able to me, although at my current condition, it would take me a lot longer, but that's why the shuttles are there.
As far as Downtown, just take the Rio shuttle to Bally's and then hop on the Downtown Xpress.

 

As the others have said, this is very doable. Still, even though they're close, there will likely be quite a bit of hoofing it.

When I give people advice related to walking in Vegas, I half-jokingly tell them to take at least two completely different types of shoes with them. That way the blisters from the first pair won't rub in the same places as the others. Being prone to blisters, that's exactly what I do and it's not remotely a joke for me.

Ive stayed at the Gold Coast, Rio and Palms a combined 10 times. I've never used the side walk from Gold Coast to Rio theirs a island in the middle if you need it but traffic is always light their pretty easy to make it across all six lanes. Just don't j-walk from gold coast to the Palms. I did it once when drunk and almost got hit.

 

I've walked between the three of them quite easily when we stayed at the Rio.

 

Slightly off-topic:

I'm a guy who likes to walk and I do a lot of it in Vegas. On one of my first trips I walked from the Orleans to the MGM Grand (along Tropicana) on a dark night about 9 p.m. Don't know why. Not drunk.

About halfway (e.g. point of no return) I had the sudden, chilling realization that at least half of those drivers flying past me on that narrow strip of sidewalk were under the influence of something or other.

it looked and felt like the wrong side of a a kamikaze attack.

Result is I acknowledge my temporary stupidity and flash back on it whenever I set out for a nice walk in Vegas. Even crossing the Flamingo to visit the Palms from Rio or GC.

 

I was contemplating walking from Rio to Palms for our upcoming trip. We have Penn & Teller tickets and also want to eat at Palms Buffet, which includes unlimited beer. We were considering parking at Rio and hoofing it to Palms, eat, then walking back before the show. After thinking about this, doing this all in somewhat nice clothing and shoes, we just think we will just drive the short distance. I wanted to take advantage of the unlimited beer at Palms, but I also can do without the walk on a possibly warm night. I sweat very very easily and would not want to feel sticky and uncomfortable while watching a show.
