Cheers to the Aussies who may have changed how the world drinks beer. I rarely get hangovers as I drink water ever 2-3 drinks or so to keep hydrated, but hydrated beer could be the cure for hangovers of beer drinkers across the globe.

    Beer of the Future

Quenching a hard earned thirst with a big cold beer just got better for you – thanks to the work of some clever Queensland scientists. Researchers from Griffith University's health institute have discovered that it is possible to substantially improve the hydrating effects of the amber ale.

By adding electrolytes, an ingredient commonly found in sports drinks, and reducing the alcohol content researchers found that beer could become even more refreshing. And the best news for beer drinkers is that the taste of the modified brews didn't change. As part of the study, the researchers modified two commercial beers, one regular strength and one light beer. They then gave them to volunteers who had worked up a sweat after exercise to test fluid recovery.

Associate Professor Ben Desbrow said the light beer which had been combined with electrolytes provided the best level of hydration. "Of the four different beers the subjects consumed, our augmented light beer was by far the most well retained by the body, meaning it was the most effective at re-hydrating the subjects," he said.

Professor Desbrow said it was more effective to tell people how to minimise dehydration than telling them not to drink. "If you're going to live in the real world, you can either spend your time telling people what they shouldn't do, or you can work on ways of reducing the danger of some of these socialised activities," he said.

The new super beer paves the way for products to be developed that could reduce the likelihood of the dreaded hangover; so it's a triumphant day for beer drinkers everywhere.

that sounds cool, but if you're drinking light beer with low alcohol you might as well be drinking water. I think water might actually taste better.

    oh yes...

not exactly changing the approach to drinking real beer.

now if they could do this with a Timothy Taylor landlord then I'd be treating the inventors with respect and devotion.

until then.. decent beer and a couple of pints of water at the end of the night..

Why bother? And light beer is "lovemaking in a small boat" beer already.

Wow this has bad science written all over it.

Where's the control group? They have a control group drinking normal beer but what about a control group that drank water and another that dehydrated through alcohol consumption instead of rigorous exercise?

The efficacy of replenishing electrolyte imbalances is much greater after exercise than after other forms of water loss. Dehydration from exercise is largely hypotonic (loss of electrolytes) while dehydration from alcohol is largely hypertonic (loss of water). Its the same reason why drinking something like Gatorade is much more effective for rehydrating an athlete in the middle of a game than it is for some dude sitting at home who drinks it with his sandwich. My dad, who was a chemist, used to make the most perfect electrolyte drink I've ever had for us to take to practice when we were in high school. The rest of my teammates got hooked on it as well. But it didn't do much for you if you were just thirsty from a long day.

Also, this electrolyte fortified beer has already been around for a while apparently and drunk by marathon runners looking to celebrate after a race.
