My wife and I are thinking of staying downtown for the first time next month. We are passing through on the way to a business trip and decided might as well stop in vegas for the weekend. Unfortunately it is the same weekend as the Mayweather vs Canelo fight and strip prices are crazy, especially for a short visit where we will only be crashing in the room and out and about most of the time. This conclusion has brought us to the thought of staying somewhere on fremont St. We are considering the GN, the D, or the Plaza. I am usually fine staying at the motel 6 on vacation but she has standards. On the strip we usually stay at the Signature or MC Hotel 32. Which hotel will give us the best "not a dumpy hotel'' experience?

Golden Nugget - nice, not dumpy, except for their video poker and lower limit blackjack games.....

Right now "dumpy" probably only applies to Las Vegas Club and Binion's for rooms and both have closed their hotel portions. I maintain the GN is most "strip-like" of the downtown properties. The D, Golden Gate and Plaza have recently dumped some dough into their properties and upgraded the quality of their product. Four Queens is alright and the Main Street Station, Cal and Fremont joints have a VERY loyal following here on the board, so they must be doing things right!

IMHO, the GN is one of the only places downtown that had a "strip resort" feel. The other hotels are only wannabe hotels but do not provide the same level of service as a strip resort.

the D and the plaza are trying to be like the GN and while the renovated plaza rooms are nicer they aren't up to the GN level. Same with the D, the rooms are still not up the GN level. the other hotels are all similar, cal, mss, fremont, 4q, while not bad they aren't really close to strip level hotels. the boyd hotels have a loyal hawaiian following and many supporters here but the stay is nowhere near strip or GN stays IMHO.

Given a choice your wife will want to stay at the Nugget and it's not really a close call.

    I would agree.

All the other properties will have something that if somebody isn't satisfied will be able to find to complain about and so I would spend the extra $10-20 a night to keep from having a trip ruined, even if its just a little short one.

People love the GN, but I really enjoyed the El Cortez Cabana Suites. Loved it, loved it, loved it there. Price was great- $56 for 2 nights total, and one of them was a Friday

The Prices for that weekend are rising! I agree The Golden Nugget facilities are nicer but at 187 average daily rate on that weekend for Friday and Saturday night you are better off at the Plaza. The have newer furniture and with the 10 dollar resort fee it will cost about the same as the D. When it is crowded weekend in Vegas the D has elevators that have a tendency to back up and create long lines to get back and forth to your room. Jump on it soon.

Plaza is decent looking after the remodel, but charges about the same as Golden Nugget for not as good of an experience. Don't be afraid to try The California or Main Street Station. Their rooms are not fancy, but very nice and renovated 3 star hotels. They are also the most affordable and quiet hotels with some of the best service IMO. The D is totally renovated and new, but the hotel service is sub par.

Happy wife better not be in the Carson tower:cry:. Gold club rooms are dated. Rush tower is the only place I would stay.

Carson rooms are dated, but clean and well maintained. Rush tower rooms are awesome, but when I stayed there last I preferred the cash savings lol. Yes I'm that cheap :p

Lots of people. People who visit Vegas are quite diverse in their habits and their likes/dislikes.

If you have a really hot chick in your room, you may be in there for a while.

    At $150 to $200 a night?
I'd stay at Plaza and use the $100+ savings to play their $10 2-deck BJ shoe game, which is one of the only ones downtown that permits DAS.

I like the rooms at the Nugget, and I have stayed there a few times, but I like my gambling money even more.
If 'room quality' is the only consideration, then yeah - stay at the Nugget...use the Landry Card thing to get the most bang for your buck.

    Golden Nugget for sure.

I personally wouldn't stay downtown again after staying there in February. But that's just me.

If you are looking for a "strip" property stay on the strip. There is a quaintness to being downtown, and feel of having a good time, roaming from casino to casino, all at much lower costs. This is for those who look to have ALOT of fun with regular people for a low price. If you are looking for upscale/luxury/posh, think twice about mingling with the downtown crowd or you may be disappointed. Pay the extra and stay on the strip.

If what I said is what you're looking for, the Plaza, MSS, D all offer great pricing. When downtown you only need a place to sleep, refresh and make drinks. Don't look to a downtown hotel to provide anything more. You are out and about for everything.

We stayed at the Plaza 2 weeks ago and it was nice.

Hey:poke: Since when do regular people only belong downtown? Are you implying you have to be rich or a DB to stay on the Strip? Or, the DT crowd is somehow beneath the people who frequent the Strip?

We're part of the downtown crowd and have been for over a dozen years and we would fit in just fine on the Strip, if I could stand it! Which I can't!

I'll agree with your post about upscale/posh/luxury and the Strip, but when you imply there is something negative about the "downtown crowd", I take exception!

I guess I implied wrong. I never meant 'regular' as negative. I would probably have been better saying you wont find posh/trendy/stuck up/hipsters/highbrows downtown as much as you would on the Strip. I consider myself a regular guy and I've stayed on the strip plenty. You find both kinds on the strip, but more regular Joes downtown. Ok Joe?

If you are looking for upscale/luxury/posh, think twice about mingling with the downtown crowd or you may be disappointed.
I didnt see anything bad about what I said here, and I'll stand behind it. If you are a highbrow type, you won't feel comfortable downtown. But to jump to the conclusion that the strip ONLY has highbrows is not right either.
