Have you ever had that oh shit feeling, when your Vegas trip smashes into your life or vice versa? Back in January of this year i decided to buy a table at a craft fair. I am an abstract artist, when i can find the time that is. We had booked our first flight for the 13-17th and then we changed our minds and booked for the 20th-24th. So just now, looking at my booth paperwork i see that the craft fair is actually a day later than i thought it would be. That means that i would only be able to do the fair for half the morning and go right from it to the airport. Can we say...DOH!!! So do i price my art at crazy cheap prices in hopes of fattening my bankroll? and leaving less for someone else to clean up, or keep the prices higher and take the loss. I can't pull out of the fair, nor do i want to. Has anyone else had something like this happen to them?
We narrowed down our trip to only one possible week in Aug that actually fit our schedule. Once the plans were set we found out they wanted to schedule our Fantasy Football draft that night before we leave. The draft starts late and our flight leaves early and it would have cut into much needed sleep. Luckily after many e-mails back and forth we were able to reschedule the draft for another weekend.
Luckily for me i have a partner who does floral arangments and is willing to get someone to help her tear down. Would it be wrong of me to put out a tip Jar that says Vegas bound...LOL
You art is not worth less just because you are in a hurry. Especially if you do abstract stuff that is not mainstream. I say leave the prices the same or even raise them but let people know you wont be there if they want to think about it.
Hmm. Take a loss, or fatter bankroll and no leftover inventory. Hmmm. Let me think...it's a craft fair, not a gallery, right? ART SALE!!!
What's a calendar again? Anyway, I love the idea of letting people know i won't be there the whole two days.
I'm an IT dude and a few years back, I scheduled a project to wrap up one day before we were supposed to take off. It ended up not being enough time to deal with the aftermath of the project, but it sure did make me appreciate the trip more! I vote for semi-crazy cheap prices with the hopes you sell out! Do you have any links where we can see your work?
Here is the link to my wix page. I would love feedback of any kind, as i am sort of new to this. I'm in the starving artist stage. I do a lot of donations to benefits and silent auctions, and will even do commissions. http://jmrosenberry.wix.com/darkjadecreations
I do like your art works My advise is to have a sale of your art works and put them all up for one set price. Write a sign that it is only a morning sale until 12noon. Price will go up in the future. Give everybody a business card so they can call you when you return home. My idea is that once someone buys a piece of your art work they may have friends that may want to buy some of your art work in the future. You have your own style and it looks very expensive for a crafts show so do yourself a favor and keep it at a reasonable price so lots of people can afford your art work. That is how most artists get started and most buyers will brag what a deal they got in the beginning of you as an artist. I have some jewelry that is now priceless that I bought from a crafts show. It is one of a kind and the jeweler is now a millionaire. I think it is very important for people to know your art works as you say you are a starter in the business. LucyR.
Thanks LucyR. It can be frustrating at times and expensive, but i love what i do and would not change a thing other than wishing i had the money to rent a studio space downtown or have a bigger house.
