I use Winpoker to practice VP trying to get as close to perfect as I can. But when in Vegas I usually have a couple drinks  along the way. I was thinking I should simulate this by drinking while practicing to see how much I'm losing by the "free" drinks. Have any of you tried this and compared your Sober and Drunk %?

I think this is an excellent idea for you this weekend. Get a case of beer, pound at least 3 or 4, b/c lets face it even when you are "sober" in Vegas you are not. Start after the 4th beer & continue drinking throughout at a good pace. I'd be interested on your results.

I think everyone is different. So, you owe it to yourself to find out how it affects you. After all, fortune favors the prepared mind!

Assuming you know what to do when sober, you are unlikely to be so drunk that you "forget" correct play, whether you follow correct play when drunk is another matter, as sometimes you tend to "feel it" more when sloshed.

Part of it is tolerance. If you drink more in Vegas than you usually drink, then practice with the Vegas amount in you. I don't like to play any casino games with much alcohol in me because I am not accustomed to drinking more than one or two.

Assuming one has achieved a high level of skill, accuracy of play is more a matter of concentration than of forgetfulness. Alcohol consumption can harm concentration and so can other factors. I practice with distractions like music or telephone conversations. After all, in most cases Vegas casinos offer far more distractions than you have at home.

LOL. You play poor VP because of the effect alcohol has on your body/mind. No amount of practice is going to make you a better drunk VP player.

Some of these responses crack me up. It's the equivalent of saying, "If you practice driving drunk enough, you'll eventually be good at it". No you won't, regardless of how much you practice. If you want to be a good driver (or play good VP or other games) the key is to not drink. There is no other solution.

To the OP's point though, it would be interesting to play the two just to compare the effect the alcohol has on your play, but no amount of "drunk practice" will make your drunk play any better.

Stack, why you gotta be a Debbie Downer man? We're having fun here. And I think there's something to this theory. I think it's worth investigating. It might take several sessions but I think the OP can get a feel for his limits. Do a graph to plot out where your performance drops off. I think I'm gonna do this when I'm able (surgery complications & meds, blah) cuz I suck at VP and booze doesn't help. We need to share our findings.

I thought I was the only person to try this. I "practice" this method just about every weekend. I know that my accuracy decreases around beer #4 (I'm a lightweight). I don't know how much my accuracy goes down because once I get tipsy, I forget to keep track of my stats.

I addressed the OPs post in that he was actually referring to calculating how much worse he played when drunk vs. sober to try to measure the effect/cost of alcohol. That would actually be interesting and somewhat useful information.

What I was laughing at is the replies that were implying that practicing while drunk could somehow make you a better gambler when you're drinking in Vegas. It's a ridiculous thought...

Stack, I respect your opinion. I disagree that practicing drunk would make you a better player. The only way to know who's right is for the OP or anybody else who wants to take this on to follow the scientific method and test this hypotheses.

    I think this breaks down into 3 main questions;

1; how does booze affect vp performance? how much booze? over how much time? how much of an impact on performance?

2; sober vs drunk; did practicing drunk have an impact on performance? better/worse? was there a turning point where any advantage was lost?

3; are these finding duplicated with a different subject(s)

I'll reiterate that if you want to overcome or even reduce the affect that being drunk has on your gambling, your only viable option is to not get drunk.

Stack, we're going to have to disagree for the time being. That's OK.

My feeling is there is at least one person on this very board who can continue to hit their same accuracy in vp no matter how drunk they are. They've got a vp part of the brain which is on auto pilot even while the rest of the brain is singing dirty Irish limericks. That person is not me. We just have to figure out how to prove it.

I don't know if I'll follow through on this or not. But here goes:

Control: I just completed an hour of Double Double bonus practice No booze in over 24 hours. I started learning DDBonus last week so I'm still weak. I was playing nolimit holdem at same time to simulate casino distractions.

Control Results: Hands Played 585, 12 errors total, 5 moderate and 7 Major % correct 97.95. Cost in Coins for errors is 3.49. (I actually won 175 coins but that is irrelevant for the test)

I'll try to follow through tomorrow about same time of day with actual test.

I would love to hear what happens if anyone else tries it.

Stackinchips - You've really got me scratching my head here...you're making it sound like VP basic strategy is rocket surgery or something. It's a series of rules to remember. There's no judgment to make; there's no eye-hand coordination to worry about.

Unless we're talking about being "embarrass yourself drunk" I can't fathom forgetting a few dozen rules.

stackin is reiterating one good point. To play your very best, you need to be sober. And I'm sure that's true for any practiced VP player.

But if you are going to get drunk in Vegas while playing VP regardless, it's probably a good idea to practice drunk at home a few times first!

I am also interested in knowing the differences in results. However, I'm afraid over smaller samples, you could chalk up a good bit of the difference in "dealt hand variance".

Playing 77742 is a lot easier than As Qd Jc 5s 7d, for example.
