Hi Guys, I'm doing research for a little project that I'm involved with. Basically I want to know which of the 7 deadly sins you would associate with your trips to Vegas and also why you would think it is. Remember, keep it family friendly. Thanks
OMG ok....ummm.. Gluttony - I usually pig out when I'm in Vegas and eat more than usual Greed - well....duh, that one's a given Sloth - yeah, I like being lazy in Vegas and just going with a "whatever" attitude Wrath - yup...I tend to seek "revenge" on that nasty slot machine that took all my money last time Pride - I do tend to dress up a little more and wear a bit more makeup in Vegas than in my every day life...trying to look the part ya know? Envy - shooting an evil look to the lady who just hit a jackpot 3 machines down from me -- does that count? Lust - with all the naked-ness widely advertised in Vegas, how is it difficult NOT to be a little "frisky" while you are there? Nice, looks like I'm going to hell
I refer to my signature for this one, courtesy of William Shakespeare Commit the oldest sins in the newest kind of ways..
What may need to be considered is not the specific “sins” associated with a Las Vegas trip but, instead, the concept of why a trip to this great city would be different than any other. If people do indeed sin (more or less) while on a trip to Las Vegas, why? For, it is intent that matters behind the behavior (keep in mind I'm examining this from a religious perspective since sin is a religious concept). Those aware of the “7 deadly sins” (aka: capital vices or cardinal sins) probably are knowledgeable about their venial or mortal components as well. And, they'll recognize why one of the sins is considered by religious authorities to be paramount. The answer to the OP's question can be deduced by examining the need to pose it. Bill
The question was posed to see if people associated themselves with an idea/concept/sin while in Vegas. For example do you go to Vegas with the predisposed idea that you will be drinking more and hitting the buffets. In this scenario the person would associate with gluttony. I'm certainly not thinking that people are a bunch of miserable sinners. This should definitely be viewed as a light hearted, tongue in cheek topic.
Well, think about it. As I noted earlier, consider intent. For, if the person is already thinking of doing those things before the act, then he's committing a primary sin and gluttony is secondary. And, that gluttony leads to a tertiary sin. Bill
I think the ones I haven't done would be a shorter, easier list. I've never...oh hang on....nevermind
Gluttony would be the one for me. Whether is filet minions, booze or winning money, I can never get enough.
As an aside, in my younger, single days I always travelled to Vegas with my best friend. Our "arrival tradition" was to drop our stuff in the room and immediately head to the bar for an ice cold beer. We'd always make an arrival toast when we got there and the one that stands out in my memory because of the reaction of the bartenders at Shutters Bar at the Rio was my toast that said "Here's to the start of another Vegas Adventure, whoever breaks more of the Ten Commandments owes the other $100". The bartenders were doubled over and the one that s still there has never forgotten that toast. Not say'in who won or for which....what happens in Vegas, lol
I just want to acknowledge how well written your post was Bill! This would make a lively conversation at a meet lol
Not always a candidate for all 7 on each trip but always: Gluttony: Eating two (2) $3.95 steak-and-egg "Graveyard Specials" in a single day! AKA: "The Quinella." Up before 5:00AM on 1st or second morning when body is still on eastern time gets #1 as breakfast. Maybe an afternoon or early evening nap and then steak-and-eggs special #2 after midnight before turning in. Only in Vegas!! Looking forward to my next "quinella" right now!
I'd say gluttony, first and foremost. When I think about my upcoming trip to Vegas, the very first thought that enters my mind is the large quantity of unhealthy food and excessive number of drinks I'm going to consume. I associate Las Vegas with a place where I can let all cares and worries go for a few days, and a non-stop buzz from cheap or free alcohol helps accomplish that while I wander the Strip and hotels gambling, sight seeing, and people watching. The food portion of this feeling comes from the fact that I not only eat healthy in general, but go on an even higher level "diet" and exercise routine in the months leading up to the trip. I put "diet" in parentheses because it's not a typical weight loss-style diet, but rather a focus on shaving off a little extra fat and building up a little extra muscle (six pack and toned kinda thing). When in Vegas, on the other hand, I allow myself to eat pretty much anything I feel like, whether it's a McDonald's double cheeseburger and fries, a sampling (or more) of almost every item at one of the buffets, a greasy breakfast plate, or a high end steak dinner with all the fixins. Just over four weeks to go... As far as "sin" goes, I'm not religious. I don't consider anything I do in Vegas to be a sin, nor do I think any of it is inherently "bad" the way a religious individual might. I take the general viewpoint that the only real sins are situations where one person intentionally harms another person or tries to negatively affect another person (which is occasionally subjective, I know, but that's another discussion). Other than that, weigh the risks to yourself and then do what you want to do. The only reason I eat well in general is for personal health reasons; I allow myself to do some unhealthy things in Vegas because I also believe you need to live and enjoy life. You never know when your end might happen, so weigh those personal risks and then indulge based on that.
At this point I would have to agree that gluttony is probably the most prevalent indulgence in Vegas. If you can't go to excess in LV where can you?
