The website below has some very interesting and factual information with a few surprises: http://gaming.nv.gov/index.aspx
Links to the interesting and surprising parts may be helpful... this is kinda like posting to the ESPN home page and saying "some crazy stuff has happened in sports over the past few years" :evillaugh
For Clark County casinos: Casino expense for Comps: 21.7% Room revenue from complimentary rooms: 19.9% Just goes to show how this board doesn't represent a good cross-section of the average Vegas visitor. The majority of posters here probably get comped rooms, yet since each dept bills the casino for comps that really only represents 1/5th of room sales. http://gaming.nv.gov/modules/showdocument.aspx?documentid=7549
Wow, in 2012 Nevada taxed the gaming industry 864.6 million (on over 10B total gambling revenue). That's just on gaming. How much more for all revenue like restaurants, entertainment and hotel services, etc. You have to think their total tax revenue from tourism tops 1B. There are only 2.7 million residents in the entire state.
Nevada's tax structure is indeed based on taxing the "other" guy (tourism), but the percentage taxed on gaming is far less that other states. To be fair, this "one trick pony" is no fun during recessions, especially the huge one we've just endured, because the tax-base is so narrow.
I've summarized items which may be of interest in this thread, including: 1. It's a Family Affair or the 80/20 rule. 2. We can sell room and board. 3. Yes, you really are getting poorer service in Vegas. 4. Are you an above average Vegas visitor? 5. Total Gambling Revenue - FYE 2012 The 2013 Abstract should be available later this summer, and I'll post a summary of any interesting changes over the past year.
