I was recently speculating that, after I die, it would be cool to be cremated and have my ashes scattered over Lake Mead.

Then, I wondered if that's something that would be legal/allowed.

Then, it occurred to me that this forum would be a good place to ask...so, anyone?

    1. you will be dead so why would it really matter....what are they going to do fine you or put you on double secret probation :evillaugh

    2. from page 22 of this document (we can see the government has too much free time and money on their hands) it appears as though a permit would be required to actually scatter the ashes over the water and it does not state if that permit would necessarily be granted

    http://www.nps.gov/lake/parkmgmt/upload/Superintendent_Compendium_2010.pdf

it specifically states no permit needed for some areas, but those areas also specifically exclude near a river or stream and specifically over the lake.....again without a permit that it mentions no likelihood of being granted or not granted

I would say just go for it (or have your relatives just for for it obviously) since it is next to impossible that they would e caught unless they were really trying to be caught or just not paying attention to a boat with lake cops coming up on them as they do it

and even if they are caught at the lake loading up with the ashes they can always claim they are just taking your for a ride and then do it another day and if caught returning with an empty urn.....well prove it...

Based on this link, you may not scatter ashes on the Lake.

    http://www.nps.gov/lake/parkmgmt/upload/Superintendent_Compendium_2010.pdf

    §2.62 Memorization
    (b) A permit is required for the scattering of ashes from cremated human
remains, or in the following designated areas without a permit, in
accordance with the following terms and conditions:
    • The scattering of human ashes from cremation, without a permit, is
allowed under the following terms and conditions:
    a) The remains to be scattered must have been cremated
    and pulverized.
    b) The scattering of remains by persons on the ground is to
be performed at least 100 yards from any trail, road,
developed facility, or body of water.
    c) The scattering of remains from the air is to be performed at
a minimum altitude of 2000 feet above the ground.
    d) No scattering of remains from the air is to be performed
over developed areas, facilities, or bodies of water.

the link only makes clear that you can scatter ashes in particular areas without a permit and that there are permits required otherwise.....it does not make clear if those permits would/could allow the scattering of ashes in the lake or other areas

I would again say just go ahead and do it

Thanks guys... the issue would be whether to actually stipulate that in my will.
I wouldn't want to ask my survivors to engage in illegal activity. So, I suppose I'll select another spot.

By the way - too bad The STRAT isn't 2000+ ft high, huh? :evillaugh

    Oh well...

again it does not state that it can't be done.....it only states that there are areas where ashes can be scattered without a permit and anything else requires a permit

if it is what you really want just call the Lake Mead Ranger Station and ask them about the permits and if a permit would allow it

Just do it! Unless the survivors are out creating a spectacle, who's really going to notice?

Perhaps a lawyer would sound in on this. I always thought a will- as someone suggested- was not the best instrument for designating funereal matters. Sometimes wills don't get read until after the fact. It may be better to put your request into a letter and give copies to several people you trust.

I would not worry a whole lot about the legality of a water burial. Chances of getting caught are slim, so long as the deed is done literally on the lowdown. I mean, have the entrusted person or people lean over the gunnels and pour straight down. It is bad to scatter ashes from any height for a couple reasons. Ashes blow all over and could be seen from a distance. Also, they often get on the celebrants. This I find moderately disconcerting.

I completely agree. If done discretely who would ever know, and no harm is done.

I scattered some of my Dad's ashes at the Agave Pit in Red Rock Canyon for personal reasons in 2007. I first scattered the ashes on my Moms grave who is buried in Cali, she died in 1978. I also scattered his ashes at the Long Beach Naval Shipyard because he's a Navy veteran from the Korean War. I was born in the Chelsea Naval Hospital while he was on duty overseas. I finally scattered the rest of his ashes at Red Rock Canyon. If you've been to the Agave Pit at RRC it's easy to do because at that time there was no one around. Burying a loved one by cremation was what my Dad wanted. The reason why RRC was on the list is because he knew that i loved visiting the Canyon when in Vegas as well as our love for the Native American people before, during, and forever. I didn't scatter the ashes in the Pit, just on the land around it and let the breeze take care of the rest.

If there is a problem with Lake Mead, how about scattering your ashes in the pool at the Cal? No one would notice! :evillaugh
    Good luck. :beer::beer:

In my circle we decided whoever goes gets their ashes shaken in a bag with $1 and $5 chips and then played on Craps tables in Vegas.

That way we'd always be part of the Action.

My mum died on Easter Sunday. Her and my dads wishes are for their ashes to be mixed and distributed in the middle of the stone circle near to their home and at Spring mountain ranch just outside Las Vegas. I have never thought about the legality of this. How on earth would anyone know about it anyway?

I've mentioned to my wife that she should cremate me and scatter my ashes in the Bellagio fountains when my time comes. Do you think surveillance is too tight for that? Think I'll plug up the works? The several times I mentioned it my wife just rolls her eyes.
