And I'm not talking about working girls.

If someone says to you they're a vegas pro, they know all about Vegas, what questions would you ask them (as a pro yourself) to test their mettle? Phraised differently, what knowledge separates those that really know vegas from amateurs?

Here are some examples - see if you know the answers:

    1. How much does a cab get in a kickback to take you to a stripclub? (Did you even know cabs get kickbacks? )
    2. How much is expected of nightclub hosts in tip for walking you in for bottle service?
    3. How much coin-in through the slots would someone need to gamble to get a free room on the strip and a mid-level hotel?
    4. Where can I get a Macallan 18 while betting $25 / hand?
    5. Which "big poker room" is generally considered the best for customer service? (I truly believe there is consensus on this)
    6. What does being "long-hauled" mean and how do you avoid it?
    7. Name a steakhouse open for lunch (on-strip, and high end)
    8. Where is the cheapest steak in town (non-buffet)

Are these easy questions for you to answer? Are some too easy, can you think of others?

You mean being able to find Secret Pizza doesn't make me an expert? You've got some tough questions on your list. I await the answers.

I think if you've never stayed at the Cosmo and you know about it that's pretty good. If you've stayed there it's less impressive.

I wouldn't call myself a Vegas Pro seeing as how I've had only four trips, but I feel I know enough about Vegas for the things that I enjoy and if I were talking to somebody who had only been there once I'd have a decent chance at helping them if they were describing something on the strip. As for your questions though, I would definitely not consider myself a pro as I've never taken a cab, haven't been in a club, don't play poker, and don't gamble enough to get any comped rooms.

none of those sound like vegas pro questions to me they sound like questions a 20-something guy on a budget would want to know about things like cheap steaks, how much to tip,and where to get good scotch while betting small. a lot of people who are vegas pros and regulars or have bigger budgets wouldn't care about any of those things.

I tried to give a broad range because I think if you've been to Vegas 20 times you can really know your stuff without having to be a big bettor. That being said, knowing a high end steakplace open for lunch (and there aren't many - Country Club at the Wynn is a great one) knowing how much to tip for bottle service ($75~$100 per bottle) are things a high end gambler would probably like to know.

Everything else for high rollers isn't really advice. For example, to get your own baccarat table in Bellagio you need a $500k min, but at Palazzo it's $200k. I suppose that's somewhat useful knowledge...

    Anyway, other suggestions are welcome.

Does knowing that it's spelled "Macallan" count as extra credit ;)

I consider my self a Vegas pro, I lived there for a couple of years and visited and least 200 times. I don't play poker, visit strip clubs or order bottle service. So, I can answer #6 & #8, so by your standards, I don't know sh*t.

you didn't give a broad range at all thats what i was saying. all your questions are something that sound like things a tight budgeted traveler in there 20s would want to know about like how much are they supposed to tip for bottle service which isn't even a vegas question unless you think only vegas has bottle service,or where to find a cheap steak. no thank you i like good steaks not the cheapest steaks.

no one is saying the only other option is to ask questions high rollers would want to know about, high rollers probably know less about vegas than most people because they spend more time gambling instead of walking around doing stuff.

Do those questions really identify you as a pro? No, because everyone has a different agenda when they go. That's the beauty of going to these websites. Everyone's vast experiences may help them shape their next trip into a memorable one.

In this capacity, a pro is someone whose opinion I value and trust.

I don't know MangoPort and it sure isn't up to me to defend him/her, but I think he/she was just trying to start a thread for us to ponder and listed some "examples", but here we go again with the "nit-picking" of which we all seem to excel at on this board!!!

Ken's answer, I think is a good one... and I agree. I'm pretty knowledgeable on most things "Vegas", but I learn something everyday here on VMB.

Does knowing that all needed information can be found at VMB make me a Vegas pro?

Have to agree that Vegas is different for everyone. Hard to pin down a single list of topics that would be of similar value to all-comers.

I have vowed never to return to the Strip, ever. Similarly, I aim to eat every non-breakfast meal outside of a casino. When I talk about Vegas with people in my work/personal life, it's not usually what they want to know.

For those who cab from the airport, I would think that "(insert resort here), no tunnel" would be a good start.

A little bit off topic, but the most frequent questions I get about Vegas from newbies, or people I just met that discovered that I like to Vegas are:

    1) What games do you like to play?
    2) How much do you bet / what tables do you sit at?

    3) Are your rooms comped?

Mostly simple questions, nothing too in depth.
