How do they compare in terms of fun, value for your money, ambiance, etc.?

Dunno, but this year I am trading SoCal for NorCal and Vegas for Reno. I can let you know in December.

    AC Sucks

I don't know about Reno but Atlantic City sucks. Rude dealers, bad shows, stingy alcohol comps, and high crime will keep me away for a long time.

Last time I was in reno it was dying a slow death. Silver legacy/circus/eldorado are connected so if its snowing you can walk about without freezing. It is within driving distance to lake tahoe so thats always a nice break although u can still gamble at harrahs or cal-neva etc. Basically when they started opening casinos in between the Bay Area and Reno it was like multiple leaks in the pipe that brings money to Reno. I would only go to AC on someone else's dime.

AC and Reno are carnivals and Las Vegas is Disneyland.

I agree with bill, they are similar but no where near as good as Vegas. In Vegas you can find something that fits you perfectly no matter what your into. They are also Very competitive because there are hundreds of hotels fighting for your money. At AC and Reno there's only a handful of places and the prices are not nearly as competitive. AC is a dump though, I wouldn't recommend going anywhere near there. IMO.

Neither AC or Reno compare to Vegas, not even close. I've only been to AC once a few years back, but live close to Reno and very familiar with it. If it's gaming and only gaming you care about and many are in this group, I suppose you can get your "fix" at any one of them. To me though, AC and Reno are both a bit depressing, while Las Vegas still gets me excited before every visit and I'm there once or twice a month. The liveliness, the people watching, the whole "vibe" is Vegas and only Vegas.

In the 70s and 80s, I was a Reno regular. Our family loved it.

I spent five days in downtown Reno last October and it was flat depressing; it was a shadow of its former self. There were people in downtown Reno that make the denizens of the outskirts of downtown Las Vegas look like members of Rotary.

One might think those photos are from 6 a.m. I bet they're from mid-day! At the end of football season, Nevada hosted Boise State and the game was on ESPN (evening national game). They kept showing shots of downtown and while the lights were on... there was almost no one walking on the sidewalks... it was sad!

Although I certainly like some parts of AC, I think value is objectively lower there. Especially when it comes to hotels, the problem is that there are only about a dozen casino-hotels on the Boardwalk or at the Marina (the two gaming hubs), and though demand has arguably gone down over the last few years as the city has declined and other markets have expanded, the demand still outstrips the supply, and as such a decent hotel will cost you hundreds of dollars on a weekend; I'm pretty sure that Borgata and Revel are in the $4-500 range during summer weekends. Of course, the flip side of this is that so much of their clientele are weekend visitors that the rooms are fairly inexpensive during the week, but you probably don't want to go during the week because it's dead and there isn't much to do besides gamble. And if you do gamble, comp rooms tend to be harder to come, because the room prices are so much higher and they want to see correspondingly larger action.

Of course, on the other hand, for people in New York, Atlantic City is a free-to-cheap bus ride (they usually run about $25-30, with the casino then giving you back a good chunk of that on arrival) or relatively easy car trip, as opposed to the expense and hassle of flying to Vegas. And it's fun being able to do a day trip without needing to plan a whole vacation. But still, I feel like I get much more for my money in Vegas.

You ain't gambled till you gambled in Carson City.

    or better Eli.

Reno is fine if your just going to stay put. Atlantis and Peppermill are decent. Grand Sierra and the Silver Legacy are fine as well. No wondering around though, stay put.

Well... Carson City is a quick (thanks to the new freeway) 25 mile drive south of Reno. The Carson Nugget sits in the center of town and is a decent sized place with 600+ slots and all the table games. Across the street is Cactus Jacks and the Horseshoe Club, both much, much smaller in size, but with a 60s-70s gaming feel.

Head towards the south of town and you'll pass the still closed for remodeling Ormsby House Hotel & Casino. At nine-(9) stories, it's Carson City's tallest building, but has been closed for... gosh... probably 8-9 years now. It seems like forever, though every week there is some work going on in and around it and the owners pledge to reopen. Just a block south of there is the Carson Station, which is a decent joint with Best Western type rooms and a casino and table games as well. A couple miles south of there is the Casino Fandango, which is probably Carson's most popular casino these days. It resembles a small Peppermill inside. No rooms, but there is a Courtyard Marriott directly adjacent.

Heading still another mile down the road at the turn to go up to Lake Tahoe is Bodines. It's a small but very modern and clean joint owned by the same fella who owns Carson Valley Inn down in Minden (12 miles further south). He's a pretty wealthy guy who keeps his places looking very sharp.

If you're in this area, you do need to take the 20 mile trip up Hwy 50 to Lake Tahoe. From the Carson turn it takes 15 minutes until you can see the Lake and another 10 minutes or so to be at Harrah's, Harvey's and Mont Bleu (old Caesar's Tahoe). You can easily drive around half or all of the lake and drop back down into Reno from the north shore.

Lastly, no trip to this area should be considered complete unless you check out Virginia City for the afternoon. You could drive up there from the southern part of Reno or the eastern part of Carson City. In any event it's just 15 miles away and well worth the "trip back in time." The old Virginia & Truckee (V&T) railroad now operates between VC and the eastern edge of Carson and is a great way to travel up the mountain.

The Bucket of Blood, Silver Queen and Delta Saloon all have plenty of good gaming and lots of other stuff to see as well.

Yeah... a little bit... Nevada's Capitol Bldg. is only two-(2)+ stories, but then of course has the big dome up top with a TALLLLLL flag pole on it. The tip of the flag-pole might be higher, but I don't think the dome is...

In the late 80's,the City bought a brand-new hook and ladder truck specifically for the Ormsby House, in case of fire... the guys were so excited to have something like that they tried putting the ladder-up without spreading the stabilizer bars on the bottom of the truck out, so of course the trucked tipped over. This all happened out at the airport where they train. They took the truck out of town for the repairs to keep it as quiet as possible. True story, not many know... now I've "spilled the beans!"
