I realize I'll never experience it, but inquiring minds want to know:

    - When you get the giant check? Is only for linked promotions, progressives?
    - When does the casino management care? Over $250K? or in the millions?
    - Do they ever make a fuss over the winner with comps like suites and limos?
    - If so, at what threshold?
    - I thought I saw on one of the mega millions machines have disclaimers on them saying you agree to have your pic taken. Can you refuse?

I think a lot of it depends on the casino. I won $20K (which to me feels like winning a million dollars) on a Royal Flush at Cosmopolitan and, aside from the obligatory tax sheet signoff, there was no fanfare or anything. No offer for a buffet, room, no congratulatory letter from my host, nothing. But I think if I won that at Orleans or El Cortez or something, there would have been a bit more fuss about it.

About 10 years ago, I was with a friend of mine who hit $177,000 on a progressive machine at the Mirage. They roped her and the machine off, while checking things out - then gave her a check for the entire amount. We thought for sure they would offer her a bigger suite (she already had a small suite) - but nothing - not even a picture! My husband and I have both won $18,000 jackpots and no picture or fanfare either - but see pictures of people winning much smaller jackpots all the time! Guess it just depends on when the JP is hit and the casino.

Wow. I'm really surprised about the Mirage one. I kind of thought anything over $100K, even at the top-tier casinos, would be nod-worthy.

Several years ago on the flight from LAS to IAH, a woman was in our boarding area with a "big check". I had my DH go and check it out and she had hit the quarter WOF at Harrahs for $400K or so. It was very cool and the flight attendants put it up front so it wouldn't get damaged!

I know when the Louisiana couple hit the Megabucks at Wynn many years ago, they were upgraded to a suite for the rest of their stay as they agreed to some promotional photos.

Its strange that they would let her keep the giant check. I've seen plenty of "big" winners at my local casino 4 winds. They bring out a dry erase board and use a marker to fill her money and name in. They have like 6 different ones, some IGT some WMS etc. But they always smile for the camera and get a picture and those checks get wiped clean...

Why does that seem strange? I'm not in marketing, but by giving her the check, and having her carry it through the airport (it was probably 2' x 4'), there were thousands of people at the airport who saw that Harrah's was the lucky casino where you can hit the WOF. I don't know anything about your local, but the exposure in Vegas has to be 10 times greater than your local and what a great PR stunt.

This was likely 5+ years ago.....haven't seen a big check since then in the airport, but I'm always hoping that I will be the recipient of one.

contrary to urban legend, they don't put you in the penthouse suite and throw all kinds of comps your way when you hit a big win. they only do that for big losers. the only way you're going to get that is if you leave and come back with all that money next trip.

I get multiple W-2gs on many trips. Never had my picture taken. Yet, I see these folks with $2,000 wins posted all over the place. Have had at least three wins over $10,000 - no hoopla.

For the record, I would NOT do the picture thing, no matter what. No benefit, and only downfalls. Especially if near my hometown.

I do remember the first time I hit for maybe $1,400. I was nervous as hell. Cocktail waitress was there right away. Got drinks and gave her a $20.

I'm sure it will never be a problem but I would be freaked out having my pic taken at all let alone because I won a bunch of cash. Glad to hear it is rare.

I expect they take pictures of the more photogenic people. I'm fairly certain I could get a million dollars without my picture being taken :D

Yeah, I would not want to be advertised as the guy with $300,000.00 either.
I certainly wouldn't want to be carrying around a giant fake check (as much as I think they are awesome!) telling everyone how much money I'm worth if they kidnap me or put a gun to my head.

If I ever won a big cardboard check, and they let me keep it, I'd grab a bunch of friends and go to my bank the next day just to see the tellers' reactions.

In 1996 sis won $3000 at Harrah's. They snapped her pix & put the photo in one of those cardboard frames! The picture was never posted. Even then, we were surprised they'd snap a pix for such a low win. My guess is that in the "old" days they took pictures of any handpay.

That sounds exactly like what I would do. Only problem is worrying about being followed out of the bank.

For me a big slot win would have to be 5 digits $xx,xxx.

For the casino, not sure if anything under 6 digits is worth their time.

Been with friends at Aria who won up to 30k - nothing but a normal W2G payout for that. Been beside players at Aria and Bellagio winning up to 50-100k with absolutely no fanfare - just W2G and some congrats from the slot attendant!

On the flip side, was at Palazzo when a girl won a Tarzan video slot progressive for 950k or something - they roped off the machine, "replayed" the win to confirm is and to show everyone, and were generally very "showy" about the whole thing. It was like a little advertising circus. Very nice to see it tho - and she looked super excited!
