Was a bit shocked this weekend in Biloxi at the Palace when the dealer told me to not bother stepping away from the table to text. He said they allow cell phone usage at the tables. Never seen that before. Just curious if anyone has seen it allowed in Vegas. Felt weird after years of getting up and stepping away from the table.

    Wow - thought this was a no-no.

Of course, for phone calls, rules or not, I would still step off.

When I was playing at PH in 2011, you were allowed to talk on the phone and play on the table at the same time, given that you did not interrupt the game or disturb other players. I was pretty shocked at that. I was playing Pai Gow poker with one hand and texting with the other. When I had asked the pit boss, he had stated that CET had just implemented that new change earlier in the year. When I went back last summer 2012, that was not the case no more.

Whoo-hoo!!! KC and I agree... I'm not lookin' forward to cell-phone conversations on the floor. Take your call or make your call, but step off and handle your business.

As long as your text is short and simple and doesnt hold up the game, I dont see the issue. Now taking an actual phone call at the table is a big no no in my book. I dont want to hear your conversation.

it's also hit or miss how they enforce this. some pit bosses/dealers are cool about a quick text while you're waiting for a deal or something. others will jump on you as soon as you take it out. it's one of those dinosaur rules that will go away soon.

Any cell phone use (call or text) is just rude to the other players. Step away from the table regardless of whether that particular casino's rules are.

I was standing on the floor of the sportsbook at the mirage, not even near the betting window, and was told to put my phone away. All I was doing was looking for the email where my buddy told me what bet he wanted.

I was making sports futures bets...I guess they thought I was calling a guy with the sports almanac from back to the future.

OK, so how long before the first time a guy at a BJ table is holding 20 and says "Shit" on his phone and the dealer gives him another card?

this is the actual reason they will not let you have a phone in a sports book...they do not want to be the dumping point for bookies from out of state where it is illegal to bet on sports

this is why cards should be dealt based on clear physical actions not verbal

Yes it is rude. You want to read a quick text message ok, but don't be sending one, or talking on the phone. The table is for gaming and socializing with those around you. Excuse yourself and step back from the table or is it too much trouble to be courteous?

the article you linked to is from 2008.....I did not realize it either until I read the next story below where someone was paying $2400 per sqft for the Harmon Hotel penthouse :evillaugh:faint:.....and then scrolled up and looked at the 2008 date

so far 5 years later the Harmon is still there and so are the cell phone bans.....my money would be on the Harmon coming down first :peace:

Yeah, the sportsbook phone ban is really effective at that. I stepped out of the book, read the bets, put my phone away and walked back in. It cost me an extra 30 seconds. Tell me what they accomplished?

I get not being able to use the phone while at the window -- that's just rude. But I was standing way away from the betting area.

It's simply a matter of someone enforcing a rule that used to mean something (back when the only communication was by talking) but now doesn't.

I am not saying it is totally working as was intended, but Vegas does have an issue with people ("organized" groups) that attempt to make last minute bets in large sums to move or play the line one way or the other or to off load their action

in the case of someone betting a game or two for a friend I doubt that Vegas or even the regulators would really actually care (although the regulator would probably pretend to care since it is their job to "care") but Vegas has no use for and no desire for people to be standing 2 feet from the window 30 seconds before a game starts getting instructions on how to bet very large sums of cash

and yes an extra 5 minutes or less from the window to make a call and then walk back into the book does not make a huge difference, but with cameras and employees all over the place someone is going to pick up the fact (very quickly) that this particular individual goes out of the book, takes a call, and then walks right back to the window and makes large bets over and over and over.....and that person will be ask to leave and banned from the property

LOL, How is it that you can be okay with reading a text, but not sending one while the dealer is shuffling? Is the typing on the touchscreen phone too loud for you? And since when is it mandatory to socialize with those around you?

I can certainly understand where you're coming from on a phone call, as I don't want to have to listen to your conversation, but texting while the dealer is shuffling doesn't have ANY affect on you whatsoever, and having a problem with it is absolutely ridiculous.

Quite frankly if you ever tried to give me guff for texting or quickly emailing someone on my phone while waiting for the dealer to shuffle, I would laugh in your face.
