Just added five days to our September trip!! Time to hit vrbo.com and get another place to stay! Haena or Hanalei, here we come. Hoping our former neighbors are gonna tag along, too.
I have to go to Hawaii next March 2014 but I'm not looking forward to it. Why? Because I am not a beach person, I'm allergic to shellfish and I don't play golf. Hopefully there will be something entertaining for me. Any suggestions?
I went to Hawaii for the first and only time in early December of 2004. My association had a 4 day conference there and my wife and I added a couple days on the front of the trip and 5 on the back of it. We were at the Hyatt Towers on O'ahu at Waikiki. I'm a golfer, but not obsessed with it... neither am I a "beach" person... and I flew over there with a bad attitude of, "c'mon really how great can this be?" I absolutely LOVED it and am now wondering why we haven't been back? Our group had several special things arranged during the conference, where we bussed over to the Polynesian Cultural center for a tour and luau and things like that. My wife, who is a beach person, sat out there all day while we had our meetings and we clubbed and ate and whatever at night. Of course, you probably have friends like mine who tell you, "Oh Waikiki is the tourist trap, we have a little place on blah, blah, blah that's fantastic, you never see anyone." But I don't know that I'd like that... I don't go on vacation to be away from people... I go to do things I like and people entertain me, unless they're whiney old people. I remain a big Hawaii fan and would go back in a minute!
Tons. Let's start with which island(s) you are visiting. (BTW, WAY more finfish than shellfish over there, and amazing terrestrial goodies, from cow to cheese to greens.) I sadly got a late start to experiencing Hawaii, but we are making up for lost time as I/we are able to go over 2-3 times a year.
I'll be staying at the Hilton Hawaiian Village Waikiki Beach Resort Honolulu. I guess I'll do all the Pearl Harbor and other tourism stuff. Sight seeing etc. I don't drink, don't eat fish, beef or pork haha. Just chicken and turkey. Too bad they don't have casinos. Hopefully they will have a decent spa.
We eat, snorkel, shop markets and farmstands for local inputs, golf, kayak or do sea excursions, hike and the like when we're in the islands so I'm not really sure what I'd recommend for you. Sounds like you'll be eating lotsa ono chicken. Don't forget the mac salad! Catch the other sights and sites at Pearl, like the air museum, not just the memorial. Be ready for crowds.
