I'm in Vegas now and have been lucky enought to win $10k...on a royal flush progressive on ultimate Texas Holden, however the flamingo took 30% of me and said I have to claim the rest back in uk,,,,they didn't know how I'd go about it....does anyone here?

    Thanks in advance

You have to file a form 1040NR or 1040NR-EZ with the US IRS to get your money back. The casino withholding the 30% is standard procedure.

You will have to go to the IRS website, download the form for getting an ITIN number and then effectively file a US tax return.

Note that people will say that as you are from the UK you shouldn't have any taxes withheld in the first place (the UK has a tax treaty on gambling winnings and taxes with the USA), and that is true...

However, what has happened is already in the past. So you can go back to The Flamingo and make a big stink about it and demand to speak to supervisors, etc... but it will all be for nothing: once they do the withholding tax its gone and you have to file a tax return.

Not sure this helps but the Gaming Commission in Vegas are extremely helpful if you ring about anything so may be worth giving them a try. Also I'm sure there was a TR a while back from someone from the UK who had the same issue at Plaza. Someone may remember who it was or you may be able to do a search on it.

Congrats on the win by the way. If you are carrying more than 10k on your return you will need to fill out a form at the airport.
