I was looking at the Mandarin NYC website. The standard room there, which I think is nowhere near as nice as the Vegas one, is $995 a night. The Vegas one is $200.

I've stayed in hotels in Philly, DC, NYC, Chicago, etc., that cost more than the ones in Vegas but would be considered 3 star hotels in Vegas.

Anyways, just wanted to say I love that aspect of Vegas!

I have 3 weeks in Vegas this year at Caesars Palace, Rio, and Bally's all free. But don't tell anyone......remember, what happens in Vegas, stays in Vegas.

Maybe he will really try hard to beat the system. Just simply sit in the room, and the pool and walk around and just laugh at the system. He will pack all of his food and drink and spend little money.

It could happen... although not fun ;)

It's one of the reasons it's a great place for conferences, if you can get it past the "holy-rollers" in the group. There's always at least one who says, "ohhh I don't know about the perception..." That one comment makes most of the others bite their tongue and go "OK, Marjorie how do you feel about Portland or Omaha" and the whole group ends up somewhere like that. Ughhhh

The airfare, room, food and beverage costs are outstanding compared to most anywhere else in the country.

Still probably one of the more affordable(minus gambling money) destination cities in the US bar none.

For our upcoming July trip for 9 nights -airfare for 2(used FF miles)hotel(Orleans) , rental car(Thrifty) and parking at the airport -right now we are a little over $600.

Doesn't include bankroll. And upon checkout I might get "FREE ROOMS" and "FREE" food.taken off my bill :)

Even paying for the above it's still a good deal.

Actually, i will do what i have done in my many years going to Vegas when going solo. My dining consists and will consist on being frugal by choosing lunch and dinner options (i don't eat breakfast) wisely for me. Like the Buffet at Gold Coast, eating fast food off the Strip, like near Orleans, etc. I prefer to spend $10 and under on food. I use my TR rewards credits at hotel coffee shops, I don't drink or smoke Cigs. I don't spend money on shows because i've seen most of them in previous years. I don't shop in the malls (i do look around though), i don't take taxis, i used to drive but can't currently, so i walk, take the Tram, take the RTC bus, and the shuttles. When i go to Vegas, which will be next in 8 days, i do spend my money, sometimes generously, on tips (like the sandwich, cocktail waitresses, etc), and on gambling. I hardly ever sit in the room, i do use the pool but just for an hour or two (l live near the Pacific Ocean), and i never laugh at anyone because for my situation, it's best for me.
I have always loved Las Vegas since the late 70's, but what i have learned (when going solo) over the years is you don't have to drink or smoke, you don't have to dine in upscale Restuarants, you don't have to spend money on something you can get at home for a lot cheaper, etc, etc. to have a great time. I'm itching to go back, this week will be the longest of weeks, and Vegas means something different to many people, but i don't take Vegas seriously.........that's why i've been going to this oasis in the desert for 30+ years.........mirages are not real, they are just something to observe on your way back to reality.

there's no other city in the world where you can show up, have a world class vacation and have it all paid for and leave with more money than you came with. but sometimes I wish the rooms and stuff weren't so cheap or free. because sometimes that vacation costs you 10-20x more than it's worth.

But here's the thing, even if you're paying for the rooms, they're still pretty damn cheap. I'm organizing a bachelor party in Vegas over the summer; I've got free rooms at most MGM properties, but only the groom has ever been to Vegas before, and nobody gambles, so everyone is paying rack rates. I still managed to find the MGM Grand for an average of about $115 a night, including a couple weekend nights. A resort like that, especially with their pool complex (not to mention the bars and restaurants), would be significantly more expensive pretty much anywhere else in the developed world. It's a pretty great deal even if you don't gamble and don't get free/cheap rooms, and to be honest, probably even more so if that's the case.

There are something like 80,000 hotel rooms in Vegas, so they're hardly ever all booked. Rooms cost the hotel/casino almost as much to keep empty as full, so they compete for your business with both prices and amenities. Add to that the fact that many of the hotels are subsidized by the casinos within and there are deals to be had for sure!

It's often cheaper for me (from the Boston area) to travel to Vegas for a week (including airfare) than it is to spend a weekend at Foxwoods or Mohegan Sun (the closest casinos).

I just recently had this conversation with the non-gambling wife... she had suggested I go to Shreveport instead of Vegas, arguing that I could drive and be back that much sooner, and it would be cheaper.

I pointed out to her that the 4 hour drive was longer than the flight...that the flight was "free", using miles, but gasoline is not...and that there would be no room cost in Vegas, but there would be in Shreveport.

So, going to Vegas was cheaper, quicker and easier... she had no come-back at all! :evillaugh

There is a newly built casino in Larchwood, Iowa. Rates on a Wednesday average $300 a night. Vegas is insanely cheap as far as room rates is concerned.

There's a Best Western and Holiday Inn down the road from me that are $130/night. I have no idea who's staying there (nothing touristy here) but they're busy all the time.
Then last year they built two more hotels down the hill from them. Hampton Inn and some other one. Same rates, $130/night or so. Now all 4 are pretty busy.

This is why I always end up back in Las Vegas every year. I've looked into going to the San Diego Comic Con the last couple years. The prices for the hotels scare me away. I can stay at a Vegas hotel for two or three nights for the price of one night at a San Diego hotel.

My sister likes to take her kids to Disney and stay at one of the Disney Hotels on site. Their hotel cost is more than most people's gambling budget.

Vegas hotel prices ? PRICES .. ??? We don't pay no stinking prices !!! :nono:

I'm sure there are Lots & Lots of other Vegas fans here on the board that never pay for a hotel room ... depending on where they feel comfortable, and how much "action" they are willing give in the casino. That has always been the acceptable trade-off between guests and casino properties.

And ... even for the very low-rollers, there will be room offers better than your local Best Western. How great is that !!

    Viva Las Vegas !!!
