Casino workers always say "good luck"

I have been thinking about this for some time. Everytime you have a transaction with someone who works at a casino, even the gift shop lady, they say good luck. never have a nice day, cheers, goodbye, always good luck.

Clearly they are encouraged to say this to every guest but i have always wondered why.

I thinks its something like telling an actor to "break a leg" because saying good luck is supposedly bad luck in the theater.

maybe thats what they are all doing to us, actually wishing bad luck upon us.

hey, any advantage the house can get they will take.

 

I think you're looking farther into it. I bet you most employees could care less on you winning or losing.

 

What else is fun is that Chick-Fil-A employees are trained to say "my pleasure" whenever a customer says thank you. So I tend to slip about 50 thank yous into my order to keep them on their toes.

 

I don't think they wish bad luck on you. They personally don't gain anything from your losses. The dealers want you to win so you can tip well.

 

I bet its a corporate policy.
I like it and will take a wish of luck from anyone.

 

I used to wonder about them always saying 'Good Luck' to me, but then I decided it was better than 'Fuck You, Charley!'.

 

I cringe when I buy lottery tickets and the clerk says "Good Luck!" As a fellow gambler and friend of mine says- That is the kiss of death.

To fellow gamblers I'll say "Go get em" or something to that effect..

But in the casino many times I've gotten that and /or Better luck next time that was sincere from dealers' cause they know me by then.
They don't want to jinx anyone contributing into the tip pool that day/night.And same from VP bartenders first drink I believe is sincere.

Ive never heard that though in the coffee/gift shops I don't recall..Just normal chatter.

 

Also players that are winning will also be more pleasant to deal with. If a casino employee really wished you lost, they are just making their job more difficult. It's not like dealers get raises for making 20s and 21s on a consistent basis.

 

They say "Good Luck" but in their mind they are thinking "Another sucker."

If there is one thing all dealers know, it is that the house always wins in the end.

 

I swear there is this one lady at the convenience store I go to that always says "good luck" in a snarky tone to me when I buy tickets there. Kiss of death would be saying it lightly!

 

Ohhh, I'm devastated. I thought this was genuine.

 

Well...that good luck with a smile sure puts a smile on my face.

 

the employees say it because it's policy. however, the reason it's policy is simple. because it keeps gambling on your mind. if they said "have a nice day", would that get you in the casino more? nope. when they say "good luck" it reminds you that just outside that door is a casino that you can try your luck in right now and maybe strike it rich. the more they keep the concept of gambling on your mind, the more likely you are to engage and the higher their profits.

 

"My pleasure" seemed more genuine when I lived in Atlanta, maybe it was the accent. Where I'm currently at (St. Louis), it seems a bit more forced.

Well... In most cases, yes. Experienced dealers also are aware that not everyone plays at a disadvantage, and on rare occasion can lend some of their experience in your favor. I once had a BJ dealer chatter inanely about what a bizarre number of small cards had been dealt so far, and that it must be my lucky day. I'm quite sure they aren't supposed to do that, but I obligingly quadrupled my bet.

Saying "Checks play" in a voice entirely unsuitable for reaching the ears of the floor supervisor, he dealt the cards with a smile, telling me "Good luck" with a wink.

Sometimes they don't care. Sometimes they want you to lose and get the h*ll off the table so they can get an EO. And sometimes, just sometimes, they really really want you to win.

 

The old addage "The House always wins in the end" may be true for most. However I've been going through my trips to vegas and thinking about all the money I've spent over the last 12 years on gambling, food, drinks, and etc. and I'm pretty sure (about 90%) that I've either broke even or am just a smidge ahead on gambling in the long term here because when I go to LV I sometimes won't gamble at all, and sometimes I do and I'll have a small win or win enough to pay for my trip (since I'm an airline employee and don't pay for airfare this is pretty easy to do) out there. So all in all I'd say I'm in decent shape but that doesn't mean I haven't had some losing sessions.

So when they say "good luck" to me....I think to myself it's just something they're trained to say. I used to think the allure of vegas is that you could win a lifechanging jackpot at any given time. Lately tho it seems unless you're putting 100 dollar bills into the machine they don't want your money. I've tried to put dollar bills into some machines only to have them spit back out at me because the lowest denom the machine takes is 5 dollars. Remember when slots used to take actual coins and you would save your jar of quarters for your next trip? Seems like those days are long gone.
Vegas has changed, the house doesn't need luck....but we do.

 

What about the people in the Cashier Cage? I've personally found that they seem excited for you when you walk up with a handful of TITO's.
Maybe they are looking for a tip who knows but they still say Good Luck! I do recall an old gentleman running a shoe shine booth outside the
bathrooms at Luxor just around the corner from the Pyramid Cafe. He took the time to say Good Morning to every person that walked by.
He seemed like a nice old guy and he always lifted my spirits for some reason.

 

The best thing a casino dealer can say is to say "perhaps it's not your day" or "perhaps you need a break, get something to eat" if you have been losing bad and are on tilt, or perhaps you had too much to drink.

Most dealers won't say these things, conditioned to accept player failure after watching tens thousands of people lose a lot / all of their money at their tables. It has to be sad and depressing after a while, unless you cease having a personal interest in most/all of those sitting at your table.

Most dealers say "Good Luck" after a buy-in or cocktail waitresses after a tip and sometimes at the cashier, but I generally don't recall non floor staff saying good luck (hotel clerks, dining, gift shop, valet, etc.).

 

Everytime I hear the dealer say "Good Luck..." I can't help but think he's thinking in his mind: "You're gonna need it.....":evillaugh
