Golden Gate - Snack Bar/Deli??

Have always enjoyed a late night sandwich/shrimp cocktail at the deli in the back of Golden Gate, but was told today by a friend that it no longer exists.?? Please tell me this is not true, I have made this my late night stop for 20 years.

People are always lined up for a bite, did they really get rid of this and if so, why??? Always seeme like the main draw for Golden Gate, am I wrong? All I know is that I would always commit a few hundred at the tables before getting my cable car sandwich, if it is gone I will not be stepping foot in the casino.

 

Well that'll teach the new owners a lesson for spending a chunk of change into remodeling and refurbishing the place! The famous shrimp cocktail is still around, but now goes for $2.99 and is sold inside Dupar's 24hr. restaurant.

 

Where you referring to the Bay City Diner? I loved that place.....good service, good prices and great food! I don't understand why they changed it.....if it ain't broke, don't fix it! I guess they want a younger crowd that likes loud music and girls dancing on tables!Fortunately, there are lots of other places downtown so there's something for everyone.....and not far away.

The food counter in the far rear was different from Bay City Diner. Both are gone, but the Diner is an extension of a chain restaurant from California now. There was talk at one point of Bay City Diner coming back, as DuPar's was performing poorly, but it has since come into it's own and has a dedicated following for their very expensive pancakes (probably costs about 5 cents to make, but they charge two hundred times that. Whatever).....

A bowl of soup and a drink also costs about ten dollars, too, so it's no surprise that the shrimp cocktail has tripled in price. How they've succeeded in relation to everything else downtown, where you can pick up a hot dog or margarita for a dollar, a prime rib dinner for $7, and a burger with potato salad for a five, is anyone's guess.

It's apparently been shut down 3 times by the health department. Not sure if this is entirely true, but it's enough for me to usually avoid the place. But their yellow pea soup is actually very good, along with the spaghetti and meatballs special.

This is all very discouraging news....right before my next annual Vegas downtown visit. GG table games and late night (early morn) snacks have always been one of my favorites....because of the fun and the values!

 

No piano any more either.

But I am okay with the changes. It is a fun place and I appreciate the owner's vision.

 

I also miss the piano at times, but it is a very hip place now. As for the shrimp cocktail, ask the bartender for a coupon. They'll generally give you a free pass for some shrimp. I know $3 won't break us but free is always nice.

 

This is pretty disheartening news. I loved the Dupars $6 pancakes. Best pancakes I have ever had (maybe I have not had too many) but simply amazing.

 

They may have been shut down, but I eat their panckackes each and everytime I go to Vegas. I highly doubt this will stop me in the future. And to the employees who wont eat there, I probably wouldnt either, who ever eats at their place of work after the first month or so. YOu get so sick of it you dont ever want it again.

 

I ate at DuPars 3 weeks ago when I was in there. 3 eggs, bacon, toast, hash browns, OJ and a shrimp cocktail for $18. I thought it was actually pretty good and it hit the spot at 11 PM.

 

I must be the exception, but I finally tried the Dupar's pancakes on a recent visit and was underwhelmed to say the least. I'm a pancake snob, so maybe they just don't make them how I like them, or maybe it was just an off day for that cook.

Best pancakes I ever had in Vegas was at a small cafe in Henderson. Can't remember the name! Just basic buttermilk cakes but had a dark, crisp outside; soft, fluffy interior; and a nice tangy taste.

It is true. No more shrimp coctail in the back-no more piano player. But, you can still get the Shrimp Cocktail at the cafe in the front of the casino. Not the same vibe,but the same Shrip Coctail for the same price. I got mine for .99 cents but felt like an idiot sitting at a stool in the diner.

 

You can order a shrimp cocktail from the host stand and eat it at the tables that are right outside the restaurant proper.

 

18 bucks for that???? I'm sorry but, that's nuts. I been in the restaurant business for 38 years now and breakfast is the CHEAPEST meal for a restaurant as far as costs. What ever happened to the steak and eggs specials or with ham?? It's been 6 years since I been there but it went up that much?? Isn't there anymore "graveyard" specials??

 

The owners of the Gate did an extensive remodel of the casino area as well as adding onto the rear of the building; adding several new rooms/suites. Although the deli drew people to the property, I can see where the new owners thought that area was not generating enough revenue. Don't get me wrong, I enjoyed several shrimp cocktails there during my Vegas trips and I do miss the piano player. I do like the remodel of the casino floor and the new restrooms are a big improvement. The rooms have been remodeled and are very nice, although the rooms are on the small side and the bathrooms are really small. I've stayed at the Gate a couple of times in the past five months and have no real complaints. Comfortable bed, flat screen TV, in-room safe and plenty of hot water---meets all my basic requirements.

The casino still retains it's quiet charm during the afternoon, but takes on a more up-beat vibe in the evening. I enjoy gambling there during both time periods....fairly good BJ rules, low table minimums and friendly, talkative dealers. Cocktail service is a little slow during the afternoon, but very quick in the evening.

You have to go to Dupar's to enjoy the delicious shrimp cocktail..you can usually find a seat at the counter with no waiting or you can get one "to go". Wait service has always been good and the pancakes and french toast are super. I'll pay a few bucks more there because I can count on getting good food and good service.

I still remember my first visit to Vegas back in 1975. I sat at the bar at the Golden Gate one afternoon and had a shrimp cocktail and a bottle of Coors for $1....thought I was on top of the world.


One thing about Vegas, things are always changing which makes me always look forward to my next visit. Check the place out...you might be pleasantly surprised...just my opinion.

 

Dupars pancakes

I had pancakes at Dupars this week....they were good, but.....over-rated and over-priced....THey ladle butter over pancakes before serving...way too much!

 

That once great snack bar was previously responsible for attracting a lot of people into the Golden Gate Casino. But before it closed it had become worse than horrible, Due to my last visit there, I will never set foot in that casino or the DuPars cafe again.

 

The snack bar just seemed Vintage Vegas.
I thought it more of a novelty must do for the shrimp cocktail.
Golden Gate always got some gambling money out of my pockets.
Had to walk by all the slots/tables to get to that deli.
My mind just wandered to that cheap deli they had on the Strip located inside...dang, can't remember the name of that casino, but located across from Riviera.
I miss that cheap low cost deli too....and I'm not cheap!
