During our upcoming trip in June, my wife and I have decided to spend a night downtown at the Golden Nugget. We want to experience Downtown and not have to worry about getting back to the Strip late at night.

More than a month ago, I signed up for “Email Specials” via the Golden Nugget website and received an offer (reduced room rates) almost immediately. Since it came so quickly, I thought I would wait to see if the next offer was any better. The problem is that a second offer never came and the first offer has expired. Do the “Email Specials” come out on a quarterly basis? I subsequently signed up for 24 Karat Club via the internet but have received this message: “To complete your registration we invite you to stop by our 24 Karat customer service desk on the casino level to activate your account.” I don’t expect we will receive any offers via 24 Karat Club until the account is activated. I believe my best option at the moment is to call the Golden Nugget directly. Or should I be a little more patient?

Any help or advice would be appreciated. Thank you.

You can only sign up for a player's club card (slot card) in person. And because of this and because you have no history of play there, they're not going to give you any awesome offers (you're basically an unknown to them).

Perhaps on your upcoming trip if you gamed a lot and at the levels they want, they'll send you offers for discounted or free rooms.

What I can suggest is-- if you know for a fact that you want to stay there on a specific night-- go through a discounter.

For example, I just plugged in Tuesday, June 4 in Expedia, and you can get The Golden Nugget for $52 that night. (Tuesdays are slow.) You didn't mention the specific day in June, though.

Also, I know GN is considered by some as the "best" downtown hotel, but others disagree and there are some others which are priced on that day, via Expedia, even lower:

Main Street Station (one of my favorites) - $38
    The D (recently remodeled) - $31
    Four Queens - $29
    El Cortez - $25

Even if you stayed elsewhere, the Golden Nugget is a quick walk from any of the downtown hotels. That's one of the advantages of downtown, everything you probably need is within a few blocks. So, for example, if you decided to focus all or most of your gaming at GN on your trip but booked a room at Four Queens next door, you're still very close to your room when you and the wife want to call it a night.

If you don't like Expedia, there are other discounters... Bookit.com, Booking.com, Orbitz, Hotwire, Priceline, Travelocity... Room rates are rather low these days and there are deals to be had. Don't feel that you always must book your room via the hotel's website itself.

    Hope this helps.

Thank you raisingoo! We plan on staying Downtown on Wednesday June 12 so your numbers should be good.

    Awesome. Have fun.

For that particular night , Orbitz, Hotels.com, Priceline, and Kayak are all showing $52 for GN. Other nearby places are even cheaper.

Glad to hear of someone branching out to downtown, even if for only one night... After a few more trips, you might be tempted to ditch the Strip mostly or entirely... I know it's up for debate, but some people prefer downtown's better gambling odds, closer casino-hopping, better food and beverage pricing, and the historical vibe. I know I do.

We do the GN each trip for our first night - and stay in the Rush Tower.

This affords us a nice room for a very good price!

Love downtown for 1 night, don;t think I could do more than 1 night.

Try this code, GOLD2Q13, for ten dollars off the listed price. Sun- Thurs running at $52-59 before discount, but just go to their website and check. I could not get the computer to take the code, but the phone operator took it immediately. The code is not person-specific, just a flier promotion.

I think you'll really enjoy downtown. I love both the Strip and downtown, but 90% of my visits are spent downtown now, with just an afternoon on the Strip. But both have their benefits.

As for GN deals, I've found they're rather intermittent. Last month I got one that included a $50 Landry's gift card, good anywhere in the GN (or other Landry's locations) except the Rush Lounge. That's a good deal...except I came home with it full. Forgot to use it. Oh well...

So keep your eye out and book when something good comes along and you know you'll be in town during that time. Or stay next door as earlier suggested. You could save $20-30 a night that way, and still be within a very short walk to the GN.

JUst go to the Nugget website, look under deals. June 12 is currently $42 for Carson. $62 for Gold Room and $72 for Rush.

    Go for the rush room.

I've never stayed downtown, but have visited the GN a few times. I love it there. My husband hit a jackpot on a Big Event monopoly game there a few years ago. I'm looking forward to visiting them again in 19 days :)
