I start out with good intentions. I don't try to plan every minute.

I keep an eye out for show deals on a bunch of different websites months ahead of the trip. I even have some vegas.com gift cards that I've needed to use for like 2yrs now. But for some reason, I rarely pull the trigger.

In many trips to Vegas, I've STILL never made it downtown. Thinking about it again this time, who knows if I'll make it.

Haven't taken The Deuce or SDX, though I've looked at the website a bunch of times. Always end up walking/cabbing it from one of the strip to the other.

I obsessively read the latest restaurant reviews, and plan on going to 1-2 new ones every trip. Yet I always seem to fall back on my old favorites.

This time, I ordered some VP trainer software, and was going to practice that for weeks prior to going. The box finally made it from the living room to the computer room last week, but it's still not opened.

And then there are the hours and hours I spend here looking for new things to do (that I'm probably never going to find time for).

Am I alone here? I recall seeing a study that said the PLANNING of the vacation is generally the most relaxing part of the vacation. Guess my brain falls for stuff like that.

I really enjoying the planning phase. I must say thought, I do more research than planning. The more trips I make to Mecca the less I plan. This next trip all we have planned for sure is one club crawl. I do however really enjoying reading about what is going on in LV, I even read the LV SUN each day. ADDICTED!!

Research - Better to phrase it that way vs. planning. That's really what I meant.

Yeah, definitely addicted if you're reading the local paper. I hadn't thought about that before. I will probably hate you for mentioning that :evillaugh Seems like a GREAT resource for research that I never even thought of before.

I am on all the websites related to Vegas as my trip approaches (months in advance).

    You are certainly not alone.

The planning process is quite fun, and it helps me to fit in everything I have been meaning to see.

Waste time? I wouldn't categorize it like that... being armed with "knowledge" is never a bad thing! As many regular visits as I make, I still enjoy reading this board, restaurant reviews, etc. Las Vegas constantly evolves and I like knowing the possibilities that exist for me during that next trip. I especially like that everyone in my office always asks me my thoughts on fun things to do or good places to eat or stay.

I agree. I spend probably hundreds of hours between trips researching new places to visit or new things to do, but usually return to my favourites. Usually manage to do 1 new thing each trip though. I almost get more excited telling others about all the things there are to do and see than I do about going. Almost :evillaugh

Plus it's fun to tell the limo drivers all the new things going on in their town that they have absolutely no knowledge of :rolleyes2:

I plan, plan and triple plan. Then I don't do anything the way I planned it. But the planning is fun.

If you are doing something you enjoy or consider fun why then would it be a waste of time?

Its like foreplay. Some think its a waste of time and some like to spend extra time.:wink2:

We like to visit different casinos and eat at different places each day, so I build a list of things we might like to do each day based on available specials. These are often ideas that overlap, so I know we can't possibly do everything on the list. As each day comes, we review this reminder list and decide what to do that day. No stress about not doing everything on the list and no stress about forgetting about something we were interested in.

I don't think putting knowledge in your head is a bad thing. That's the safest place to keep information. Think of the old time mob bosses that ran entire empires with nothing written down. The more information is up in your head, the better choices you can make when the need arises. OK, so you haven't taken the bus yet even though you know all about them. One day you'll take the bus. Or you won't. So what?

I agree with the definition of research vs planning. I'm a big researcher but not a big planner. I also have things on my "to do" list that I haven't done yet. But, I'm pretty sure I'm going to die with things still on my various "to do" lists.

Having said that, I have made a note to bring better and easily accessible notes (thank you smartphones) and my "to do" list so I have a better chance of getting more of it done. Some things I've forgotten about embarrass me. The Neon Boneyard, the Peppermill Lounge, the Sahara before it closed. I could go on but you'd probably lose whatever respect you might have for me.

CaptainRon and Smartone say it best with "research" and "armed with knowledge" being the key. We are going July 20th and I have been on the computer for weeks now making sure I have all the latest info. The best part is every time I do a little research, it instantly puts me in a Vegas state of mind. (Almost) like visiting a couple times a week...Though we've only been once, we're looking forward to many more visits!!!
So dive in and enjoy! It's a NO WORRIES zone.

We spend countless hours looking at things to do or see, or where to eat. How much we get to see or do is another story! We do try to see or do 2 or 3 new things each trip. You don't want to do and see everything in one trip, you want to come back again and again!!!!!! This trip we will be seeing Ralphie Mae, and trying the new buffet at Ceasers.

Do you also consider time spent reading the Vegas boards and creating threads a waste of time too?:wink2:

One of the great things about Vegas is how things change and yet stay the same. The changes in the shows, the casinos, the hotel rooms, downtown and on and on. But it still the same place which I enjoy. Planning/research for me is really about finding those changes or those things that haven't changed which I've missed in previous trips.

I knew your problem right away! Not enough trips! I'm working on #19 and still haven't seen a million things or tried dozens of places to eat.
I don't consider research or planning to be a waste of time. I check here every day, sometimes more than once. What is the nest best thing to a trip to Las Vegas?........planning the next one! I don't think of it as wasted or unproductive time, It gives me pleasure and is a fun activity. I make notes, I read links, I check prices, I look at maps and bus routes and as the time nears I start looking at dates, prices, routes and times. My priorities are different than other folks of course, but I have fun now and then fun when I am there, and even fun helping others plan their trips and fun.

I easily put more hours into researching and planning my vacations then I even actually spend on the vacation. And more often than not I end up not doing half of what i had planned for.
