On another thread, a poster stated he/she doesn't use the hotel valet service because of car insurance concerns. Anyone ever heard such a thing? I've been using the valet with rental cars for many years & had no known problems.

I believe in some instances the car rental company will say that if the is damaged when the renter isn't driving they won't cover.

Sure, as long as nothing has happened to the car, then NO PROBLEMS.

The real question is what happens when something does occur? Even if covered, damages to a rental car can get messy. Dewey did a long disertation of this a year or so ago. Though we used to rent, we rarely messed with Valet. Partly for that reason. You are giving up control of $25,000 to somebody that really doesn't care.

I worked as a valet/manager through high school and college though not in Vegas and all companies have different policies. I wouldn't worry about insurance. If a valet damages your car they will eventually pay for it. Make sure to inspect your car before leaving the property. You can file a claim later but it will be more of a pain. Believe me the rental car companies are quite familiar with the valet companies.

I have a million stories of my time as a valet but I will leave you with two things. First, don't valet your car. I don't. Second, we used to have one of those counters with X number of days without an accident. We got a bonus after 15 days accident free. Yeah, we didn't get that bonus very often...

This is why we never valet a rental car. The dh insists on self parking. We just don't trust others with things that we are responsible for.

To each his own. I wouldn't rent a car if I couldn't Valet the car. I've made over 50 trips to Vegas easy and always Valet and never experienced a problem. It's much safer than parking and retrieving the Car myself t some of the parking garages especially at night. I'll take my chances this way. I can always replace a Car or pay a deductible or whatever.

I try to do most of my Gambling inside the Casino. If only we knew how close we were to danger when we were out enjoying ourselves, someone is always watching and it's not cause you're Pretty or Good-looking.

Everyone has their own preference whether to valet or not.

All it takes is one bad incident though. This happened to me at the fremont where all cars are valet. I gave my keys to the valet. When I got my car back the next morning there was a big scrape (about 2 feet long by a foot high) along the passenger side of the car, like the valet backed up and didn't see and tried to park too close and scraped the wall or something. I complained to the valet first. the guy said that the scrape was already there. I told him that it was strange how the scrape happened to be the same color as the walls but he just shrugged his shoulders. I know that the scrape occurred there because I always checked out the car when I valet. I complained to the fremont but they said that they weren't responsible for damages to the car. After a lot of hassling with the rental company and my insurance (lucky I had state farm so my Honolulu agent directed me to someone there to assist) and paying the deductible I decided never to valet at the fremont again (actually I never stayed at the fremont again because I usually rent a car).

The last straw occurred in Honolulu. I valet my car at a restaurant. When I got my key back, it was broken. Apparently they hang your key on a hook and I think the guy must have pulled the key down which broke the notch on the key. After that I was unable to attach my key to a key chain.

After that I never valet again. Many of these valet have no training so I don't trust my car (or rental) to anyone but myself. Years ago I had friends who worked valet, I wouldn't trust them with anything I had, I don't know how they got the job as valets because they were unsafe.

As I said, to each his/her own. I just won't take a chance of something happenning with the valet. yes, my car could get damaged in any parking lot but at least I know I can park accordingly (park away from big cars or trucks, park in areas with bigger stalls, etc.).

Sometimes we valet, sometimes we garage park, depending on the casino. We've never had a problem either way. However, I think you would be much more likely to have a car damaged in the self-park. If someone hits your car and leaves (hit and run) what recourse do you have? At least if the car is damaged at valet, you have someone to blame.

I am aware of the issues you may have if you valet. But I play the odds and do it anyway.

I can only think of a few trips to Vegas where I didn't rent a car. I have never valet parked in Vegas.
