Anybody ever spend time in the Key Largo Casino on Flamingo, between Paradise and Koval? Down the street from The Tuscany.

There was a huge fire there on Thursday, as I was making my way to the Hard Rock. I've noticed the place before, but figured it'd be shuttered for years. In reading the newspaper account of the fire, I guess it has only been closed in 2006... I just don't ever remember the place as being opened.

Never played there, but I think it was the Debbie Reynolds before it was the Key Largo. I remember that place advertising in the Sunday Calendar section of the LA Times.

Played there and ate there but never stayed in a room there. Decent food in their cafe and low prices. I remember a couple of BJ tables and slots and video poker. It worked for me when you wanted to get away from the strip.

Unless she had another place, the Debbie Reynolds place I remember was across the street from the convention center on Riviera Blvd & Paradise.

I stand corrected, good call Joe! She only had the one I think. Was the Key Largo something before it was the Key Largo?

There may have been people inside....some homeless people had been living there and cadaver dogs alerted that there may be deceased people onsite. It was a Quality Inn when it was open.

stayed there 3 or 4 times many years ago, when it was known as key largo-----was the most economical place i could find not too distant from the strip-----always get a rental when in vegas.parking was close ---as mentioned they had decent food ,basic and dirt cheap, saw a decent amount of locals dining there---

had some decent full-pay vp games like fpdw,9/7 and 10/6 job----$5 bj games with decent rules----loose with comps if you gave them a decent amount of play but you really didn't need to play just for comps with the low prices on food and rooms

also liked staying there since it was close to the airport and at that time also close to the car rentals

Actually ate inside there once. It was based on a LVA top ten, it was a burger special. Casino was a dive, but man have to admit the burger was huge, tasted great along with the fries. Hell the soda cost more then the burger special. First and last time I went in there.

I thought Wynn bought the name from a small, local motel... turns out we're both right, as this (see below) was in an article today:

In 1989, Steve Wynn was about to open The Mirage, the Strip’s first new resort in almost 15 years. Wynn didn’t want any confusion with his $565 million development, so he went around town and spent $750,000 to purchase the name “Mirage” from the off-Strip casino and a downtown motel.

used to drink there off and on. $2 Bud Lights, might have been a buck, all i knew was it was cheap and if you tipped the bar staff it got cheaper...Lots of locals, fun place during football season, and when Jimmy Buffett came to town...

It was the first place we stayed in Las Vegas. It was fine for the price we paid. I think the happy hour draft beers were 50c. That was December 2000.

I have a slot card from Key Largo.
They had one BJ table in there.
I sat, and had a beer, late at nite --
I was walking around checking out everything around
    The Strip.
Wow !.......this was MANY years ago !

Our first trip was Xmas and New Year's 2004 (8th wedding anniversary in between). I bought an air/hotel package off Expedia and Key Largo was the hotel. Of course I bought the package, non-refundable BEFORE doing any research. I joined some message boards and the old alt.newsgroups (remember those?) and found out I had chosen poorly. I figured it would be OK. No biggie. We'd still have a good time. I felt more comfortable with Expedia than I did booking on my own. And the prices really shoot up at New Year's.

Then around October the news came out that the Key Largo was closing early in January. Like the 4th or 5th of the month.

I got really worried about it. And the messageboard/newsgroup people at the time were telling me to call Expedia and change hotels ASAP. I thought, what is this place going to be like? Are the employees going to care? I called Expedia, explained my concerns, the supervisor I spoke with agreed with me and changed the reservations to the Orleans.

Anyhow, never set foot in the place. But, I remember looking at their website and hearing about their famous burgers and other bargains. And I remember my heart sinking when I heard about them closing and the couple of days I worried that our first real vacation would be crap.

the vegas advisor had a article about the Key Largo the other day. It had another name before, I can't remember. It was a Quality Inn for awhile the article stated. Its too bad they wanted too much money to sell it.

a week after the fire you could still smell it when driving by in a car with the windows rolled up. not surprising, perhaps, but i didn't expect it as we drove by. a lot of the buildling is still standing, but it's gutted in areas front to back.
