According to a VMB member's post on Facebook today, there is now free WiFi all along Fremont St courtesy of LVNET. She posted standing outside Binion's.

Don't know the coverage area etc, but it is a step in the right direction. Now if it only will reach MSS.

MSS already had free wifi last time I was there unless it changed. In the players club at least. But that is great news!!

Thanks for the info, Joe ....
I'll surely be checking out that Fremont St. wi-fi in a few days, as we will be at MSS for 7 nights.

Not free any more at MSS. They took out the free signal in the lobby area at the end of last year ... and now have it in the rooms for $9.99 / day. :Þ

Now, if only El Cortez would only add it to the main hotel and tower and be proactive! I think it is a big draw for a lot of people.

This is indeed good news. Should have been implemented years ago. One less reason to pay the resort/extortion fee.

    Update

She moved to the Strip for tonight but will be back downtown. She said the WiFi worked from ElCo to Binion's so far. She hasn't checked further west yet but promised to check if it worked at MSS along with the rest of the properties west of Binion's.

Be careful on free wi-fi, because if it's free for you, it's also free for bad guys.
I never sit on a free wifi. You log in, do your biz and log off. If you, for example, log onto the wifi on your laptop or phone, and do not log off, your system becomes vulnerable to hacking.
The rate of instance may be rare, but possible.

Welcoming and rewarding visitors vs. nickel-and-diming them. Who came up with that???

Wondering out loud...I wonder if this has more to do with the big corporation and all the young workers moving, or hope to having moving to the downtown area, rather than us lousy tourists.

Can't think of their name off hand, but they are taking over that entire building on East Fremont and hoping to encourage their employees to move into the area. Hi tech outfit.

    Surely you must be kidding.

Everyone and their mother knows Zappos is moving DT and taking their brand and money and people with them. They've practically bought up the Odgen building and putting money into all the nooks and crannies of DT.

No, not kidding. Everybody knew about Zappos, even if I couldn't remember their name.

My point was that maybe the WiFi was an additional promised incentive from the city to get them to make the move and they are now getting around to fulfilling that promise. Just speculation. I really can't believe the casinos chipped in to do it for free.

No, I don't think it was an incentive. It didn't sound like the city had to promise a ton as the owner of Zappos really wants to come downtown and play a part in the revitalization. I think whoever is providing the WiFi is probably doing it as a marketing thing.

There is already WiFi everywhere, so the infrastructure is already there. All they needed to do was "flip the switch" to make it free.

Okay that was an over generalization but my point is that it probably didn't cost whoever is behind this too much dime to set it up and it is probably funded by some municipal fund.

There is already high capacity fiber optic DT. Zappos wouldn't be moving there if it wasn't so.

Somebody says municipal fund and I think government and then I think like the City of Las Vegas. Which right or wrong was just my original point.

The LAST thing Zappos needs is free WiFi. They're an internet company. The have their own internet gateway and have policies with words like tunneling and VPN and intranet. I would doubt that they want the city of LV to give out free WiFi for the edification of Zappos' employees.

But the precedent of cities providing free WiFi to provide incentive of towns folks to congregate in a certain part of town has been crossed long ago. The fact that DT LV hasn't had it til now is the odd fact.

This is from the Las Vegas Sun dated Feb. 28th:

Joe Downtown: City says plans for Wi-Fi moving forward
    By Joe Schoenmann (contact)
    Thursday, Feb. 28, 2013 | 11 a.m.

Within the next several months, Las Vegas will unveil free wireless Internet access in a limited downtown area.

Jace Radke, city spokesman, said free Wi-Fi would be activated in two phases: The first phase will include an area bound by Charleston Boulevard on the south, U.S. 95 to the north, Interstate 15 to the west and Eighth Street to the east. Phase two will add an area bound by Charleston to the north, Wyoming Avenue to the south, Las Vegas Boulevard to the east and Main Street to the west.

Most of the combined area is populated by businesses and law offices but also included are four high-rise residential buildings.

The city has talked for years about free wireless Internet downtown. In 2007 city officials signed agreements for two companies to install necessary equipment on streetlights and traffic signals. Little has been heard since then about moving forward.

However, the city also wants to be keep growing its cottage technology industry, which is being spearheaded by the move of Zappos from Henderson to the old City Hall later this year.

Radke didn’t have a specific timetable for activation but said it would happen within the next several months.
