I am booked into the GN for 8 nights through Expedia, it appears my room is Carson Tower Deluxe.
Is there any point tipping at check in and if so is there anything I should request such as high room etc.

I think that it's a lot more difficult to get comp upgrades when you're staying in the hotel for a much longer period of time.

I'm booked in for 2 weeks through Expedia in June/July and will be trying to get moved to the Rush Tower.

I will pay if I can't get it for a tip, but you can only try and hopefully I'll land a result :)

Any idea how much an upgrade to the Rush Tower would cost. ?????

I think it's $30 a night on the standard upgrade charges, but I will first be trying with $50 to see if that can swing things my way :evillaugh

Some friends of mine managed to get an upgrade to the Gold Tower from Carson, and I think they just tipped the girl $20 for that.

Carson Tower rooms are fine, but they're a little way away from the casino and they're also the oldest rooms.

Gold Tower rooms are newer and have been renovated at a more recent point in time. They're also directly on the casino floor, so much easier to get to should you need more money etc.

Rush Tower is the newest tower and the rooms are really nice. They have their own entrance, checkin desk and a little shop at the bottom of the elevator bank.

I stayed there last year and absolutely loved them. The only reason I booked through Expedia this year was that I saved about £400 and should be able to get an upgrade to Rush for less than I would have paid for a normal room direct.

Thanks for your help, it will be my first time at the Golden Nugget, I chose it because they don't charge resort fees, I will probably just put $20 inside my passport and ask if they can find me a decent room, they can only say no.

Doesn't hurt to try, but I know two friends that tried it with no success. The Carson Tower is nice and if you don't mind the walk, I don't know if I'd pay for an upgrade. Then again - I only use the room to sleep and shower.

Never stayed at Gn but will be in a few weeks time, my understanding is that $20 upgrades are almost impossible there

I see you're booked through Expedia. I don't know their cancellation policy, however, you might consider becoming a Landry's Select member. It will cost you $25 up front, but you get that back in a food credit (I would suggest Vic & Anthony's, but that is because I am a steak guy.) The membership will get you free VIP checkin and a free room upgrade based on the all-dreaded availability. Of course, you will have to rebook through the Golden Nugget directly and tell them you are a member. I have yet to get that upgrade, but I am still hopeful. As for using the $20/$50/$Insert Denomination Here, it is very unlikely to work for you.

Check out the Landry's Select website. Good luck. Let us know what happens, and how you like the GN. It is our home-base casino/hotel when we go.

Edit: Of course, compare rates. Don't drop Expedia if it is substantially less. Do join the Landry's Select club. You're going to eat, why not use the food credits in the hotel. Check out the particulars.

Golden Nugget is the one hotel in vegas that really markets their upgraded for $20-$30 per night. I've read other posts were the $20 trick always ends with an upgrade purchase at the normal $20-$30 being reiterated. I'd be surprised if an upgrade for less is to be had

The desk clerks at the GN are not allowed to take a tip. It is part of their employment code of conduct. They can be fired for accepting tips.

    Golden Nugget Upgrades

I tried the $20 trick twice at GN back in 2008. First time the clerk took it, looked for a long time, then apologized. Said nothing was available and handed the $20 back. Second time also in 2008, different clerk, she immediately handed it back to me and said they were not allowed to accept gratuities.

    Haven't tried since.

Then in 2010 I had a Carson Tower room reserved but was trying to check in early (like around 8:00 am). They had more rooms ready in the Gold Tower so for no tip or extra charge, I was upgraded to a Gold Tower room. But I admit this was a rare stroke of good luck (which, unfortunately, did not continue into the casino...).

I've stayed in the Gold, Carson, and Rush rooms and for me, they're all fine. Carson rooms are good enough if you're just looking for a comfortable place to crash. If you're staying that long, it might be worth the savings (IF you can't get upgraded for free).

Spend the excess in the casino and come home a multi millionaire!

    Good luck! :drunk:

They will often upgrade you to the gold tower for free if you just ask, the rooms in the gold tower are actually smaller than the carson tower rooms, and a bit older. The only plus side is that it is closer to the casino...but if you get upgraded free you can then upgrade to the rush tower at the rush tower desk for less cost than if you tried from the carson tower lol..

When I booked a standard king room in the North Tower I asked the Reservations Clerk what to expect to receive as an upgrade because I had the Landry's card. (I had just signed up...) I kinda expected to hear that I'd be getting the room with the pool view, which in the hierarchy seems to be the next level up from what I had booked.

I was very surprised/pleased when she told me that the Rush Tower was the usual upgrade. She also said to come straight to the VIP desk to check-in. It remains to be seen what I get but so far it looks promising!

It seems to be a no-brainer to pay the one-time $25 fee for the Landry's card (which is redeemable at one of their restaurants in any event) and not pay anything further for an upgrade!

I am curious about upgrades too. I booked through Expedia, I didn't know about the Landry's Card upgrade program. Both my husband & I have Landrys Card. (daughter loves Rainforest Cafe) Does anyone ever get an upgrade by presenting it at check in when booked through a 3 party such as Expedia? I don't really expect an upgrade but it would be nice. BTW, best website/forum I have found for new & useful info! Thank you!!

My one experience with the GN Carson tower room was that it didnt matter what I requested. I asked for a room close to the elevator, as my mother was with me (sitting next to me at check in, in her wheelchair). I put this request in my reservation, and again asked when checking in. Clerk then put me at the very end of the hall, as far as you could get from the elevator. Check in took over a half hour, so I didnt go back to switch rooms.

    Two beds?

Do any of the rooms in the Rush Tower have two beds? I'm booked at GN for a Gold Tower room and all that was listed for Rush Tower were rooms with one bed. I'm sharing a room with a buddy and booked Gold Tower because it specifically offered two bed options.

I was told that the Rush Tower only has king beds. That's why I can't book one of those rooms with my son.

I believe only king beds are available in the Rush towers. I know each time I stayed there I had a king. A friend of mine stayed in a Rush corner suite and it too was a king. Gold tower...not sure.
