I just started reading about dice setting strategies for craps and theories for practicing dice control.
While I do not believe its a sure fire win methodolgy, I wonder how much edge one could hope by using this to limit the occurance of 7 and outs when acting as the shooter.

Specifically I have been practicing doing the Hardway sets, and then turning a dice to set for certain points on all dice. Example all 7's set, inside number sets, 6 and 8 setting.
I have had mixed results at some of the local casinos I frequent, but have noticed I am making a few more points before 7 outs and have picked up more hardway bets than usual based on my limited play.

So my question is, does anyone know of any properties that discourage dice setting. I know some places will get annoyed if you slow down the table, but I can set the dice within a few seconds of the stickman handing them over.

I plan to implement this strategy during my next trip, and would like to avoid any casinos that out right discourage the practice.

Only place I ever had trouble was at the Stratosphere a few years back. There were 3 other folks at the table, and the casino looked dead. Dealer still hassled me, and I'm quicker than most. He just flat out said "dont set the dice". I sevened out right after and left.

I rolled at Flamingo, PHo, Paris, Wynn, Bellagio, Mirage, Casino Royale, and Aria in the last 4 months and had no problems.

Needless to say, I set 99.5% of the time. I only do two sets, flying V and hardways. Takes 2 seconds max (I practice a lot before I fly).

I've never seen anybody discouraged downtown, and I've seen some people who are very careful setters.

Yes, they arrange the dice just so, turning them this way and that, place them carefully together, turn them so they are stacked, make three clockwise circles to build up static electricity and luck, stand on one foot, take a deep breath, and then fire the cubes down the layout in nine different directions at once, like a kid tumbling off a toboggan.

When I notice the shooter is a dice setter, I ask the stick to send them the way they want so it saves time. Then I put down a hardway bet for the crew.

You won't get much trouble anywhere in vegas for a few seconds to set the dice. I've seen guys take way longer, and I've never seen a crew say a word as long as you reach the far wall. So please, let your superstition reign!

Three or four years ago, I was playing at Paris. The shooter was taking quite a long time to set his dice. He was warned multiple times to speed up. When he didn't, the pit boss told him he was done shooting and told the stickman to give the dice to the next player.

Of course, the shooter was being kind of a dick about it the whole time. He never made even a half assed attempt to speed up and even began taking even longer to roll.

I can't imagine that you'll have any issues though. This guy was taking a LONG time to roll.

Binions used to be A-holes about dice setting. Have had no other problems anywhere else.

Casinos generally don't care because they know that it does not give the shooter any advantage whatsoever. So if it increases the enjoyment for the player, they will let them go.

I ften aset the dice. I like it when other people do too. It is part of the tradition and superstition of the game. But if you re following the rules - hitting the back wall, etc- you can not make the dice land anyway other than randomly.

The only people that make money setting dice are the people that write the books and the people that teach the classes.

I've set dice and I'm pretty slow about it. I've never been told anything, but I'm always throwing down tips for the boys so I've always assumed that since they're in the game too, they'd like to see my shooting my very best.

There are some who have become very skilled precision shooters. Seeing is believing and I have seen. The methods can be taught, but only a few develop the skill. Some of the true "Masters" drew too much heat and have been banned from playing in Vegas. I was given some advice from one of the greats known as "Billy The Kid". He basically said "don't get too greedy in any one casino. Play hit and run".

And has "billy the kid" retired from all other work and does he play craps for a few days each month and win enough to live on an island somewhere? Afterall - if he is a "precision shooter" he certainly would not need more than a few hours at a craps tale each month to live like a king.

    I doubt it....

The concept of "precision shooters" or "dice controlers" is a myth propagated by those selling their "systems" thrugh books and seminars. Approach craps for the game that it is... A game of chance that - in the long run - the house will win; but in the short run, anything can happen.

Well put Old Salty! I have been practicing a few of the sets and on my last two trips I have found myself to be a good bit "luckier"!

Be it skill, luck or maybe a bit more confidence in my shooting, it certainly has been working for me.

Agreed to a point; my experience has probably run the law of averages; BUT ( and yo baby itsa big one ) taking 1 "7" out of the equation has assuredly made for longer rolls. Snake oil sales aside, to set 'em + caress 'em seems to bring more ops to have a longer roll. Always? No. (and in all fairness, some huck 'em + chuck 'em have long roll as well)

Buy the 'system' ? Never. Have a great time at a hot table ? Always.

    To each their own beliefs/Fantasy.

We all have things we believe in that aren't real.

For me, I believe a player at craps who believes he's going to do well has a higher likelihood of shooting well. There is absolutely no basis in fact to my belief, but I still hold to it. Positive energy breeds positive results. So if you believe in your heart that your 'precision shooting' makes you roll better, I believe it too, and I'm all for it.

Reminds me of Rodney Dangerfield's line :

    .
I think it depends on the Pit Stiff's mood.
    Tips help.......if you're a slow setter.
But I've seen it go either way at any given hour
day or nite -- empty table or full table.
    .
Depends who's cranky at that moment ?

At Ellis Island casino off the strip I've seen the pit there warn a guy once for a basic set (just looking for the right # to show up, not even stacking or any of the extra mini roll stuff I see some people do). The second time they took the dice away and wouldn't let him roll anymore.

I've seen TI sweat the dice setting when a guy pressed his bets up to $100 on the pass line. Are you kidding me? Stern warning from the box to just pick them up and throw them against the wall.... "Should be done in one motion and not take more than 2 seconds" were his words.

I had an issue once at Monte Carlo....new pit critter didn't know me and said something. One of the other pit critters said something to him...he then went to the computer and then came around the table and introduced himself to me and shook my hand. I imagine that he was looking at my credit line on the computer. After that I had no issues with setting the dice.

If you think setting the dice helps so be it. I do know when I'm in a positive frame of mind and I set the dice the same way all the time I do better. As Mike said positive energy positive results!

Main Street Station downtown lets you set dice to your heart's delight. They will watch patiently as the shooter gives a couple short tosses against the wall underneath them, set the dice, rub their hands on the felt, take a couple practice wind-ups. I'm amazed at their patience.

On the wizard of odds he posted some experiment showing decent evidence dice control can work. As to how many people can successfully do it who knows. The thing the skeptics need to understand is dice control doesn't mean a shooter can roll whatever he wants. But instead increase the probability of rolling certain combinations and decrease the probability of rolling sevens. A slight nudge in those probabilities can turn it into a +EV game with the proper betting.
