Isn't this what we hoped for?

Change was a big part of Vegas pre-economic downturn.

But with all the rapid and successive changes happening now (for bad and good), isn't this the change we hoped to see? Did we get so used to the hum-drum Vegas of the recession? The Vegas we had come to expect would stay the same? More specifically, did you take things for granted?

    Very true.

look how many people have such fond recollections of places like the stardust and new frontier now that they are gone but when they were there they never set foot in them because they were dumps.

I for one am looking forward to the Resorts World complex. looks very nice from the website.

change is ok. i loved bills as much as the next person but dont blame them for changing, i would do the same.

Along those line, they cant upgrade every hotel at once so the new ones make the older ones better values. look how good of a deal ballys looks now that bills is gone.

Look how much play casino royale gets now that osheas is gone.

I do miss the Stardust...namely because it is where it all started for my husband and I. That is where we stayed on our very first trip. It was comfortable.....normal...not high end of course and nothing fancy....but it SCREAMED Vegas. The Vegas that you can still find downtown with that laid back local feel with undertones of the Rat Pack era. In my opinion, the "new" Vegas is lacking that feel.

Seems like every casino nowadays on the strip is "movin on up" to bigger and better....glitz and glamour.....high end shopping (I'll never be able to afford) posh-ier accommodations, more expensive restaurants..etc..... and all the while, attracting a different kind of customer. One with a deeper wallet and a fatter bankroll which over time will eventually weed out those of us (mysef included) who just can't afford all the new bells and whistles. When that happens I'll be taking up residency during our visits at the downtown casinos. That is, until they start movin on up too!

With that said, we'll continue to get our 1-2 trips a year in and satisfy our fix but with every single visit it seems like more and more a little something is missing. It's just not like it used to be. Remember those $1 beer/hotdog deals at Barbary Coast? That's the good shit I'm talking about!

Change is good but most people don't like change. It's great to see that Vegas is ever evolving. Can you imagine one day they might tear down some of the bigger hotels/casinos to make way for some thing "new" I'm sure those casinos back in the day never thought they would be gone but look at what happens...Change, Change, Change. As long as the feel of Vegas remains the same for me I will keep going back!

I see it as good change and bad change.

    Good change
    - New pedestrian bridges
    - Elaborate Hotels
    - Fine dinning / Food options
    - Expanding Shopping
    - Improved Airport

    Bad Change
    - Devaluing of gamblers
    - Less favorable odds due to consumer ignorance
    - Proliferation of club and nightlife aspect to every strip hotel
    - De-Theming of Vegas
    - Drop off in service, mediocrity is the new standard.

I love all the changes. Without change, Vegas would die.

    Las Vegas goes through phases.

We saw the "Family Friendly" Las Vegas in the 1990s, which went as fast as it came!

In the 2000s it was the mega-projects and timeshares and condos (oh my!)

Now after the Great Recession it's upscaling, to capture the $$$$$ of those who now have it, or those who wish to make others think they do.

No it's not the change we hoped to see. Before the recession, there was a lot of irritation over gamblers and mid market customers being frozen out. They were even in the brink of scaring off convention business with their prices and arrogance. And despite seeing where folks have ended up after the recession, most places picked up where they left off. Few are think mid market and no one is thinking about the gambler.

I love the changes. I was getting a little tired of my normal routine, so I had not been back to Vegas in 6 months. Now I will have new casinos and bars to check out. Sure I am not happy with some of the price gouging changes, but am willing to take the bad with the good. I just hope the pricing never gets so out of wack that I am forced to look at staying at properties like Circus or Excaliber. That will be the day I quit going.

Count me in the total agreement with Funkhouser.

Being in the older crowd I avoid all the new places. It may not be so bad for table players, but for us ( Mike the hubby refuses to play a penny machine) slot selection is getting worse and worse. The day will come when there won't be anywhere for us to play in the strip area. We are also not into fine dining. This year the demise of O'Sheas and Bills is going to make an impact on us. Nowhere like the Victorian Room on the strip that I know of. I guess I need a time machine so I can go back 15 years or so.

I find it amusing when people accuse an entire city of arrogance. Mostly due to the irony of someone having the arrogance to make that statement.

I agree with Funkhouser's list as well, except for the nightlife thing being a con...I think that's good for the vibe whether you are into it or not. The worsening gambling odds and devaluing of gambling are a shame.

I don't understand the complaints about Vegas becoming high-end. Where is this high-end Vegas everyone is talking about? I always stay at the same top hotels that get criticized for pushing the high-end trend and I have yet to see it. Vegas is like indulgence for the everyman, its not like its considered a principle destination spot for the upper crust. I've stayed at hotels in other cities that literally had a dress code for the lobby, in Vegas you can be in just about any nice place and see people dressed in cargo shorts and sneakers. Vegas hotels have like 3000-4000 rooms and they shell them out at lower prices than you'd pay staying at a crappy Ramada in other cities.

I bet if none of these so-called high-end changes were happening the board would be full of complaints of how rundown things were looking and how Vegas needs to revitalize the glitz it was once known for. ButterflyMtn got it right....a lot of people just don't like change.

I like a lot of this, but I'm okay with nightlife trend. Although I don''t go to clubs I like the youthful energy they bring.

I'll also add the growing east fremont food and bar scene adds a good dimension to DT.

Without change, any business will die, not just Vegas .Change is part of life and is inevitable.

"More and more, a little something is missing. Its just not like it used to be".
You summed up my feelings about today's Vegas perfectly. I know I will never have the feelings about Vegas that I had, 15 years ago. Vegas has changed and so have I.
