The last year or so we seem to find an excuse to go to Vegas or Laughlin approx once a month. We're not losing the mortgage payment but still feel kind of guilty esp when we both lose. We keep saying we're going to wait two months but it seems like we find an excuse to go again - concert, celebration, holiday, etc.

    Anyone else go this often?

I would if I could. I just got back a week ago and am planning on going again in May.

Problem is I can't find an excuse this time and my fiance is giving me grief about it. But seriously, aside from the gambling losses (which I'm going to lose locally or online anyway) Vegas is actually cheaper than most vacations. Even with me flying, I can get 4 nights including hotels for $600 for the two of us. A trip anywhere else would cost more, and in my mind is not as fun.

We had a three or so year run when we were up at least monthly (we were in So Cal then), and in one 12-month span we made 18 trips. A lot was work-driven as I was working on my first books, writing quite a few articles, but work trips always were pleasure trips, too.

We burned out, and when my work focus started to shift, the trips fell off and we didn't mind, sweetening the pot with more varied travel. We seemed to fall into a comfortable pace after that going up a few times a year. Relocation altered that schedule, too, and my annual visit is now timed around the PGA show or a media event.

I don't think there is too much or too little in an absolute sense, there's just what's right for each of us. I have friends who are heavy gamblers and they were there at least twice a month for a very long period of time. Now they've gone cold turkey.

If you enjoy it, you can afford it and it's not keeping you from doing anything else, then roll with it.

Something like this really depends on each individual person... kind of like the question of "how long is too long?" or "can I do a 7 night trip?", like in those cases my wife and I usually go for 7 or 8 nights twice a year and often thats not long enough of a trip... whereas one of the guys I work with goes once a year for three nights (mainly for a convention) and after the second night he is bored out of his mind and hates Vegas and just wants to come home.

From the sounds of things, in your case if you can afford it, both the time and the money, it sounds like going monthly is right for you.

But I know what you mean: we go almost weekly to our local casino and its great when we both leave winners, but sometimes you feel crappy when we've both had no luck and come home losers.

But to us we justify it because we do very little else for entertainment: we don't go out for dinner, we don't go to the movies, we don't go see shows, we rarely go to concerts, rarely go to hockey games... if we actually set aside X percent of our monthly income for hobby/entertainment that would pretty much work out to around what we spend at the casino, and heck, sometimes we win or one of us wins and the other loses and its a breakeven trip (last August we were both just winning and winning and winning each trip that we were going 3-4 times a week).

I don't go every month but when I do go it seems to be 3 or 4 or 5 weekends in a row.

Usually the first trip is for a purpose...wedding, birthday, etc. but then the middle of the following week I convince myself I didn't have enough "me" time, meaning gambling time, in vegas because I was doing wedding stuff or birthday stuff or whatever so I go back the following weekend.

When I return from my second trip and I tell friends about it they get all pumped up and want to go so a third trip usually happens. After the third weekend trip me and few others are usually pretty close to the next CET or Mlife tier and we justify the cost of another trip by the "perks and comps we will get from getting to the next tier"...I know that's not how comps work so don't flame me...but its a way to justify another trip.

And sometimes the timing works out such that the fifth weekend in a row is another wedding or birthday or whatever. After 5 Vegas weekends in a row by body and especially my bank account are usually hurtin pretty bad and I'm Vegased out for a few months...but after a few months the cycles starts over again.

    It's a vicious cycle ;-)

you need to get your fiance hooked.....for years we went and I didn't gamble much, then I got addicted to VP and now I want to go all the time

Yes, cheap or free room and other expenses is something we use to rationalize too....we're in so cal so we drive; gas isn't cheap but still not that much when you compare to 2 airfares

I guess we can afford it for now at least.....even though we could be using that money for something more practical or saving it

    thanks for the enabling

I go once a month. Flights are usually free via Southwest Rapid Rewards Visa, and I stay/eat/play/entertain on the cheap. Have made friends out of locals and performers, and it feels like a second home without the guilt. If you can do it, then do it with gusto!

We go at least once a month; 20+ trips each in 2011 & 2012. Slowing down though as we've only been there 3 times this year. We don't need something to justify going but we mainly go for the clubs so if a dj we like is spinning, we'll try to make it out there.

Like Auggie said, the frequency just depends on each person. We don't get burned out because we do short Friday-Sunday trips so it works for us.

I spent a couple years there 2x/month. Fortunately, i've never really gotten bit by the gaming bug, so it was just a matter of being a bit frugal. This was ten years ago when downtown was the wild west, and rooms were $20-25 even on weekends. Now it's 3x/year on average, and typically involving golf...

Me too! My address would eventually be the bridge between MGM & NYNY after a few months though.

We are in a casino at least once a month and I don't think it's too frequent. If we lived in Las Vegas we would go more but would probably avoid the strip too frequently. I would rather go to the casino once a week with a smaller bankroll and enjoy playing instead of going much less frequently with a bigger bankroll.

And you have my respect for it too... I go once a month, but I'm fortunate not to have to pay for airfare, hotel, car-rental or food. My 2-3 days are primarily for business, but I always have at least one night to "lose my mind" and those nights put a dent in the wallet!

Personally it would be too frequent for me. For my wife and I, it's about spending two days piling in all kinds of awesome, and if we did it more than twice a year it would lose some of that. I split my budget over two trips...if I went monthly, I'd have to split the same budget over 12. I prefer to drop 6 grand twice than 1 grand 12 times.
