... As above please guys, which is the best in close proximity to the Golden Nugget? I'm aware of the Omelet House and the eat (?) restaurant, but which is the best buffet very close to the GN?

Any tips on etiquette, times and tipping would be great as we are first timers!

    Thanks

    Chris

Well ... there's always the Golden Nugget buffet ... and there are 2/1 coupons in both the ACG and LVA books.
However, our favorite downtown is the Main Street Station buffet.

Great stuff, thanks bud. So you think we couldn't go wrong with the GN buffet?

What times do the buffet run from? I'll check the websites now...

    Thanks

The GN buffet is fine, you'll leave happy. That said, The Main Street Station is "known" for their food!

MSS is the only one I recall eating downtown in recent years.

    Very good for breakfast.

Besides the Golden Nugget and the Main Street Station, the Fremont hotel also has a breakfast buffet. Except on weekends, all three buffets are under $10 (and there's a two-for-one coupon in the American Casino Guide for the Golden Nugget). Main Street Station is usually listed as one of the best value buffets in town and is by far the largest of three. Golden Nugget is fairly small as far as Vegas buffets go, but it certainly has all the breakfast staples.

There are two chain breakfast restaurants in downtown hotels: Du-Par's at Golden Gate apparently serves the best pancakes anywhere, and the Hash House A Go Go in the Plaza serves up massive-sized meals. And of course, there's now a Denny's at Neonopolis.

I would just stick at the Nugget (make sure to use the 241). I have had their breakfast and it was good.

Tip 15% and your karma will be good for the day, just not less than 10%.

I've been to both the Fremont and MSS breakfast buffets over the past year and I don't think it is even close...MSS hands down.

Fremont = Dark. MSS = Bright. Had (cheap) champagne at both but the MSS buffet is bigger and has more of what I like.

I know I've heard many that like the taste of the Fremont offerings more, but I don't see it (a step down from Golden Corral in my opinion). I will say that the price is right for both.

    MSS for me!

I've been to both (The GN and MSS) . . . they were both good, but it seemed to me that the MSS buffet had a bigger selection of food. On the week-end it's a champagne buffet.

Thanks to everyone for the advice, great stuff!

binkie - we are from the UK and not gamblers at all, so does the LVA coupons offer still apply to us? No idea what it is or how to use it yet?!

Also guys, how do we go about tipping for breakfast? Complete 'wet behind the ears' question I know, but isn't it self service? Who do we tip lol?

    Sorry!

    Thanks all...

While the nugget breakfast buffet is okay... it has also been cited by the health department *twice* and closed once in the last 3 months for roach infestations.. That kind of killed it for me. The main street station buffet is great for breakfast, alot more variety and selection. Its also the best price of any of them downtown.

Much as I love the Cal... I do not recommend their breakfast buffet.

    See for yourself: http://www.royalflushervegas.com/2013/03/don-gamble-on-stupid-last-day.html

I found the Nugget left me unsatisfied especially for the price - all the food was fancied up with sprigs of mistletoe and oddly colored vegetables and sauces you never heard of and the like. Just give me... breakfast.

I would choose either Main Street or the Fremont with Main Street the clear winner between those two.

Main Street Station Garden Buffet. Beautiful room, great variety, good quality food, entertaining omelet chef. I wasn't at all impressed by Golden Nugget's buffet. Line was long, price was high, food was mediocre at best. I won't return, even when it's free.

    Bling,

Regarding tipping, here is what will happen:

You will be in line to pay at the MSS. Then a lady will find a table for you. Then you may proceed to the buffet line. ( I always leave a little something on my table to mark it, like a newspaper or my cap. That way I don't return to the wrong table ). Pick up a plate and serve yourself. Or, you can get a freshly made omelette ( highly recommended at the MSS ). When you return to the table, a waitress will appear and ask for your drink order. For instance, I usually ask for coffee & orange juice.

On the weekends, the MSS offers champagne at the brunch.

Upon departure, I usually leave $2 per person on the table as a tip.

Oh, and I give Manuel $1 at the omelette station.

Claudia is my favorite waitress at the MSS, and I always ask the lady who is doing the seating to sit in Claudia's section.

Hope that clarifies it a bit.

Not sure if anybody mentioned it, but the buffet room at MSS is very pretty. Chandeliers, sunlight, etc.

It is a long block walk from GN to MSS.

Google Main Street Casino. Access their website. Look for dining, then buffet. It will list the times and prices, and there are some pictures of the room.

Welcome to the USA & to Las Vegas!

I call this The Tip Game, which I use for buffets only.

For the cheaper buffets like MSS, I tally the tip in my head. Keep in mind I eat alone, so I have nothing but time.

If they take my drink order within a few minutes of sitting down: +$1; otherwise +0$
They don't look at me or smile: -$1
Each time they check on me, clear plates, and/or offer a refill: +$1
They call me "Hon'", "Sugar", or "Sweetie": +$2

I have been at several buffets over the years where they never offer me a refill or check on me...they get a quarter to $1. I've also given $5+ tips on $10 buffets to those who are stellar. :peace:

Made-to-order omelets at the Nugget are better than the Wicked Spoon at the Cosmo .. at least in my experience!

I have never eaten at the GN buffet but I like the Fremont and MSS because I like my eggs cooked to order. MSS is a bit more as I recall and is a bit nicer, nice atmosphere and larger variety of food, nice salad etc. Try them both. His advice on tipping is good. I think the norm is 15-20% of the meal based on service. My waitress friends say most people do 20%.

I THINK at MSS yu redeem your 2 for 1 coupon at the promotion booth and get a player card or something and get a voucher for the buffet. At the Fremont, you get a reduced price if obtain a player's card. Most hotels give you a discount, or funbook or some perk if you get a player's card which you do not have to use if you are not a gambler. Slot players insert them into the machines and it keeps track of what you run through the machines for purposes of giving you comps.
