Vegas Downtown Report

Hey All,

I just noticed in the thread The D-vs-Fremont that one of the posters...VegasSteven has a pretty cool blog/website that he writes.


Very nice!!! I wish I had the talent and time to do blogs/websites like that!! I really like Fremont/downtown Vegas more and more.

My wife and I use to visit the strip and just like the sayings go.."It's an aquired taste" or "When your older you'll understand or appreciate it". I have the aquired taste and appreciate the downtown area!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

We(my wife and I) appreciate downtown Vegas...the slower pace, the proximity of the casinos and the QUIETNESS..El Cortez provides. I know, I know...I sound like my parents...oh boy!!


** I just hope that by talking, posting, stating, promoting and all the other cool things about Fremont...it doesn't become like what I'm avoiding(The Strip)***




I'm not taking away from this GREAT website, I just like to share anything cool about Vegas with my fellow Vegas Forum readers!!

But this is, in my opinion, the best message board on Las Vegas. So I've found a home here.

Thanks to everyone for posting about your trips to Vegas. I tend to get there about 3-4 times per year, but it's never enough. I live vicariously through you all in the interim.

 

Gee, wish I was smart enough to put something together like that! I left off after eating at Eat.....it's too good to read quickly. I always like to hear abut new places just off the beaten path (normally locals secrets). Great work!

Stoked to check it out! Been a DT regular for a decade now...just starting to get to know it, look forward to reading your site.

 

I'm another that's fallen in love with Downtown Vegas after spending 2006-2011 on the strip.

Last year I stayed at the Nugget for 2 weeks of my 2 1/2 week trip and won't ever stay anywhere else again.

Enjoyed the blog, will keep me entertained for a good while I think. I share your love of Vic & Anthony's too having eaten there twice on my last trip and no doubt will do the same again.

As it happens I had already tagged Andiamo for dinner after reading about the refurb of the D online and will definitely be heading there now.

I always spend some of my trip at Palazzo and split it with Wynn/Caesars or similar and all I can say is that I'm glad I discovered the GN!

I have MS and my mobility has gotten worse over the last few years and I now use a scooter to get around as I can't walk very far anymore. The Nugget is perfect in every way, just like a strip hotel on Fremont street and I love the fact drinks are about 1/2 the price too

It's so easy to navigate my way around from casino to casino. I find the people are friendlier and it seems a lot less pretentious than the upscale resorts on the strip too!

 

Downtown

It's so nice to meet other downtown fans! I generally post to the blog about once a month, usually just as a sort of diary to myself. But now that I know others are reading it, I'll post more often.

There's never a shortage of Fremont St adventures.

And I agree with what you've said. Downtown is more easy to navigate than the Strip, the drinks are cheaper, and the people are generally friendlier and more down to earth.

Not to take away from the Strip as I love Cosmo, Carnival Court, and the Mirage. But one afternoon taking in those three places is enough for one trip.

 

converts are great...love the enthusiasm....it's like a brotherhood! (and sister hood!!....love the gals that appreciate what downtown has to offer to us all).

 

DH and I are also downtown fans. Have never spent a single night on the strip, and don't intend to. We love how easy it is to get from one casino to another. Since the main purpose of our trips is to gamble we appreciate the fact that if things aren't going well at one place it takes all of two minutes to walk to the next place. I don't go to Vegas to try to impress anyone, and also don't care how rich, good-looking, etc the next person is. I'm sure there are tons of "regular" people on the strip too, and to each their own, but for us downtown is a great fit. I will definitely check out VegasSteven's website.

 

well put! I don't knock all the Strip-centered folks either, hope they continue to enjoy it so downtown can stay less crowded maybe for a little while longer...

 

I just read your whole blog from start to finish and it's definitely given me some dining ideas for this year.

I'll be getting a limo from the airport now via the link you posted too, now that I realise it's not all that more expensive

I had earmarked Andiamo as a possible for my trip after seeing a review of it posted and I'll definitely be trying to set something up now that I've read yours!

I also agree with you on Vic & Anthony's having eaten there twice myself last year too. I organised a dinner for a bunch of guys from our poker forum in the UK and it was that good I went back again the following week.

I enjoyed lunch/dinner at Grotto and the only regret was not getting to grips with that dessert display that they have as you go in :evillaugh

I will mostly be playing poker in the Grand this summer, so will have to make sure I try some Red Sushi during the lunch break. I think that's the only place I haven't eaten in the whole resort.

I stayed in the Rush Tower myself last year for the whole 2 weeks I was there and agree that the rooms are very nice. I did have a Jr Suite, but it was too big for my requirements and I downsized to a normal room which was just fine.

Reading all your posts on downtown has got me itching for my 2 weeks this summer... Only 3 months to go and I'll be back at the Golden Nugget enjoying a Vodka at Claude's Bar with Kelly

As for the strip, I enjoy eating at Sushi Samba, Cut and some of the other restaurants in Wynn/Palazzo, but there is only ever going to be one place for me to stay in Vegas from now on and that's the Golden Nugget!

Last year I booked myself into the Nugget and was travelling out alone, a few other guys from the forum joined me and we all had a great time. Now this year there are 20 of us descending on the Nugget for varying periods between 7 and 17 days from the weekend of June 21st

 

Nice blog. I'm about halfway through now, will save the rest for after I get some sleep. I think you've convinced me to give Andiamo a try... I was staying downtown when they first opened, but hadn't bothered to get reservations.

I didn't realize that the downtown Denny's was getting a wedding chapel. I certainly won't be using it, but I'm going to have to peak inside and see. I can only imagine what it must be like!

Your take on the Cabana Suites is, for the most part, spot on. They were not, however, the first or only ones downtown offering free candy and water. I first experienced this at a Gold Class room at the Golden Nugget. Still, it's a nice, unexpected amenity.

The picture frame thing you are using is pretty neat. Is that some kind of Wordpress plugin?

 

Downtown Perks

Atom - love your blog! You have nicer photography than I've been able to pull off. It really brings the food and drink to life!

Good point on the free candy! I forgot GN offers perks in some of their nicer rooms. I just love free candy...

As for my site photo background, it's really just a photograph I took a few trips back. Wordpress lets you use a background image on the page, so I went with that one. At first I didn't like it but never got around to changing it. Now it just sorta stuck.

Marky147 - I do think you'll like Red Sushi if you decide to give it a try. They are very generous with the sake there.

And you won't regret getting a limo from the airport. It is a little more expensive, but I think it's worth it. What you lose in $ you make up in time. And style.

3 months to go? I may be back again this June. It's 50-50 right now.

Love Claudes's Bar for a wakeup coffee. You probably already know this, but just in case...if you're staying at the Golden Nugget, coffee at the bars is free. True for most hotels downtown, including El Cortez. El Co always asks to see my room key. Golden Nugget have (so far) always taken my word for it.

Claude's Bar is next in line for rennovations. Not sure when, but it is eventually to look like the Int'l Beer Bar and Bar 46. Hip and modern.

Hope to catch up with you guys on Fremont during a future trip!

 

VegasSteven: Wow! I didn't know about free coffee at the bars at ElCo and GN. Usually I end up sitting at a VP machine waiting for a CW to take my order. Thanks for the tip! The background photo on your blog is cool, but I was referring to the way your articles have photo slideshows running at the top. I think that is a neat way to display them. Glad you like my blog as well. It's been a lot of fun so far. Cheers!

 

Oh right the slideshows. For that, all you need to do is upload two or more photos per post. Then, insert [slideshow] wherever you'd like it to appear in your post. Just like that, with the brackets. It should show up once you've uploaded the pics.
