We will be staying at the Riviera. Which transportation system will be easier and safer to use to get to the south part of the strip and downtown?
    Deuce, SDX, or the monorail.

The monorail won't get you downtown. Take the bus right in front of the Riviera. Cross the street to take the bus to south strip. It's cheaper and more efficient than walking to the Hilton for the monorail.

You can catch the northbound Deuce right in front of the Riviera to get Downtown, cross the street and in front of the McDonalds is a stop to head south along the strip. If you go out the Riveria's back entrance and walk through the parking lot, you can pick up the 108 on Paradise in front of the Spring Hill Suites, this will take you to the airport. If you cross Paradise, you can pick up the 108 northbound. If you walk about 10 minutes to Paradise and Convention center Blvd., you can pick up the SDX.

If you have a iPhone/iPad, check out an app called HopStop, it allows you to navigate public transit systems throughout USA. I used it in Chigago, Boston, and New York. You can plug in an address or "pin" the map and find the nearest transit stops and what routes are available. It also has the map of the Las Vegas MTA system. Once at a bus stop, you can text the number of the stop which appears on the sign to the MTA and you will receive an automated reply which indicates the approximate time of the next bus.
