that's what is lacking on the strip, upscale accommodations.

i'm sure there will be brand appeal to some, although gansevoort means nothing to me.

It is probably the right size to redo into something else although I wish the "something else" was something else. But they also mentioned the Sahara as being redone into something similar THAT seems like a challenge.

It also mentioned the establishment was going in the "destination" direction rather than gambling; so sad as Bill's / Barbary Coast wasn't so much a destination for laying your head as it was for gambling. The more things change......

Saw this today. As the article mentions, there are two Gansevoorts here in New York; the first one was in the Meatpacking District, and it's known more for its nightclub/bar scene than for the hotel (the only people I know who've stayed there wanted to go clubbing and needed a place to crash, basically). I'm not optimistic about ever wanting to set foot in the Vegas location.

Was Bill's really that cheap? It had been a while since I paid for a room completely, but they never seemed to be the place that came up on Kayak for the cheaper rates.

Its Sad to see Bills go it was where I learned to play craps on their 5 dollar table and I had one hell of a great roll. I came up 5 out of 6 numbers for the firebet with a $5.00 chip. Not to bad for a guy just learning. Fare well old friend. Also I dont think I will be stepping foot in there place either, Maybe I am getting to old

I like the Gansevoorts here in Manhattan. They've got good lounge scenes and I guess it was only a matter of time before one opened in Vegas since that's been the trend. I'm with you guys that I'd rather see them keep a casino there though. No need to fly across the country for the same things we have here.

That's the trend, love it or hate it. One result is that things like this will help push/keep down the rates at places like Bally's and hopefully Caesars.

I'm trying to think of when the last low-midscale place was built from the ground up, and all I can think of in recent decades are the Cannery and Aliante way up north. Last from-the-ground-up midscale place on the (arguably) Strip I can think of is Silverton (nee' Boomtown) and that was some time ago.

I'm sure that the name will replace Freemont [sic] as the most frequently misspelled word on this board! :)

I'll never forget checking into the Barbary Coast, dropping my suitcase on the bed, turning on the TV...and discovering there was free 80s porno.

    Good times.

Methinks it won't be free once it's the Everlasting Gobbstopper or whatever they're renaming it.

When they decided to make everything neon, I am sure there were complaints.

All the neon is gone now (most anyway).

I kinda miss the neon :(

I will certainly miss the neon on Bills. Beautiful at night.

This was the rumor back in October.

Weird that Caesars is going to turn over management to Gansevoort. At least it will now be included in Total Rewards.

    "Hey where are you stayin'?"

"Oh at the Garthfart, I mean the Gansevoort."

    I've always hated that name.

God forbid there is another economic downturn. I mean the THEhotel is changing to Delano at Mandalay (but MGM is still managing) and everything is trying to go upscale.

I guess it works there by having separate buildings for the richer visitors.

Does that mean floor to ceiling windows so that exhibitionists can show off their afternoon delight to folks on the street below, like they do in the Gansevoort hotel in the meat packing district?

If their marketing is sucessful, will other properties turn gambling into a secondary consideration at their Hotels? Downsize their casino's and redue their space with night and day clubs and more high end restaurants? Stop with smaller inexpensive rooms and turn that space into $250 and up accommodations? No more need to comp rooms if their are very few gamblers there. It could take quite a while to happen, but it may. This could be a windfall for the downtown area and non-strip properties, if they can appeal to the relocating strip player's. You could see them upgrading downtown eventually.

I don't think they can get $250 long term. There should be better proof of that in a few months at NOBU. People are balking at that type of rate for a small hotel room. Unless they have a plan to expand the rooms, they will have problems getting a high rate considering the existing competition. I appreciate making moves to get a higher rack rate at that space but I wonder if this is reaching too far.

Seems a little sad. Never stayed there but ALWAYS went there every trip. Oh well FWIW just saw the OLD movie "Coneheads". Every time I will walk past Bill's I'm gonna think of Akroyds line "Narfle the Garthok".

I personally think this will be great. A lot of people dig small boutique hotels. And it'll still have a casino, you just don't have to walk through it to check in.
