What is the name of the charity that regularly collects donations on the Strip? They stand their with ID cards and cans.

They are a rescue mission type organization, but not the actual Las Vegas Rescue Mission.

I want to look up their organization. And I lost whatever info they gave me.

I got stopped by one of those people on Fremont last year, it was an older fellow and he was making things out of paper and gave us a one of those cheap chinese style hand fans. The money went to cruelty for animals or something like that, and his whole deal took about 5-10 minutes. I think I gave him a $5 at the end just to finally get away, but he wanted no less than $20, he kept asking for more. I always wondered since if he was really working for a charity or not, but regardless he took the time so I felt like I should give him something.

I think so. Definitely not Salvation Army, or, like I said above, LV Rescue Mission.

But definitely Christian, religiously oriented, friendly people, and they like to tell you about their programs for the homeless.

I got really angry with a High Roller outside of Cosmo who was aggressively rude with the collector. I gave him money just to offset the jerk.

But that doesn't mean they are a well run charity, like the Sal Army or LV Rescue Mission, so I wanted to look into them.

I know which ones your talking about...but also cant remember the name, but one of them was in the casino royale drinking a beer last sept when I was there...It really upset me, as he was still in his "uniform" and had his badge card on. Seems to me the organization was for homeless or disabled, but either way, I dont like to see the ones getting donations in the bar drinking while still dressed in the uniform.

There is no way those people work for a legitimate charity. The only difference between those people and the other people panhandling on the strip is that they have come up with a much more organized method. What legitimate charity is going to demand a $20 when you give them a $5?

I second the posts about questioning their legitimacy. I have had those guys catcall at me and if you're representing a real charity, that just doesn't seem appropriate. I'm sure any group could have a few bad apples, but with everybody's collective experiences in different parts of the strip....makes you go "hmmm"....

I completely agree, I only catcall when I am off duty, out of uniform, and the Funkhouser Good Humor truck is safely parked at Dmitry Pekandropoff's "Lockem Up Tight" parking lot.

Actually you can verify legit charities here. My guess is they were paid solictors for Las Vegas Rescue.

I think they pull from other DB, just use Nevada selection.
I use the generate list. It will come back with around 12000 for NV under the non paid charities. Charity Navigator is a good site too.

Too bad. So the guy was rude. They should expect that when approaching strangers for money. You don't know anything about that high roller. He may give millions to a hometown charity of his. The guy collecting could be keeping 80% of what people are giving him. He could easily be a scam artist even with a piece of paper that says he isn't. They can stand clear of me or expect me to be aggressively rude to them too. I give to legitimate charities and am not going to try to determine his legitimacy on the street on my vacation.

I would err on the side of doubt when it comes to unknown street charities, especially if they're are insistent about how much you should donate. There is a homeless charity in NYC where you see people with big empty water jugs for you to put money. A couple of weeks ago there was a report on them, it's a total scam.

I don't believe it's legit in the way you would like it to be. They get paid to be out there and usually 60-90% goes to the business and the remainder goes to the charity which also takes out it's % for operating costs... I saw a program about it in 2011 on the Wagners. They were trying to encourage people to give directly to shelters instead of beggars or these guys. One guy begging earned about $30 an hour. He was not homeless, he just earns more that way then with his bachelors degree.
