What Boyd properties (California, MSS, Fremont) have the best suites downtown? Are there any specific suites I should request that people have stayed in at these properties?

I don't know about Cal & Fremont, but MSS only has 1 suite per floor. I'm not sure if you can actually book one. I think they all go through the hosts.

They are basically a double width room with an open archway. 2 TVs, coffee maker, fridge & extra wide bathroom.

    Here's a few pics:

I think it's the same at the Fremont – one suite per floor with the double doors. They evidently don't rent them – they only give them away! I landed one just once, but it was a whole lot nicer than the standard rooms. Heck, I could even brush my teeth with a horizontal movement rather than the vertical necessary in the tiny standard bathroom.

I can't tell from the pics, is the shower head still chest high to a six footer?

Do you think the ol' twenty dollar trick will nab me a suite at MSS?

I'm 6'2" and yes I have to duck a little to shampoo, but in the big picture, it's no big deal.

Suites at MSS can only be given out by casino hosts, so the $20 trick will not work. They are saved for the best players. I stayed in one just once. What I liked best about it was the sit-down makeup table in the bathroom, lol.

Two of my three Boyd stays resulted in Sapphire in 2 / 3 days (I believe 10k - 15k points per day average). I received free room and free "food pass anywhere on the property for the entire trip" offers, but never a suite.

I wonder if you need to top 20-25K in points / per day to qualify. I probably would have continued playing at Fremont but I never claimed their offers again because I do not like their standard room (the tiny bathroom is the main reason though I like the standard California rooms a lot better - MSS is nice but it's too noisy).

I'll likely stay at The California for a few days in August, and may call beforehand to see if I can snag a suite instead and or try to get a handle on what is required for a suite.

There seem to be two levels of suite at the Cal.

The one we had last trip was just a big ole double room with a bar on one side and the bathroom plunked into the middle.

The furnishings in it were pretty dated and the bathroom was bigger than the standard room bathrooms, but no nicer, really.

They also have Signature suites, which I've never stayed in but are newer and nicer.

I was once told you have to be Emerald to get a suite, but then other criteria come into play. How many Emerald players are there at the same time you are, is one of them. Then they rank the players.

One trip our host booked our room two days before we got there, even though I gave her a month's notice. We check in were told no suite tonight, but you can move tomorrow.:grrr: I hate moving. That was the only time in the last ~40 stays we didn't get one for our entire stay.

I'm going solo Saturday and when I booked with the host I told her the suite is appreciated, but since I'm solo, not necessary. I'll be curious what I get.

Thank you both for your responses. Typically my play at Boyd properties is limited to one or two 2-3 night stays a year, so I will likely never come close to reaching or maintaining Emerald status. I would need 12-15 nights at my current average (or a significant bump in play) to reach Emerald - not worth it for a possible room upgrade. I like the standard rooms are at The California, and beyond potential noise issues, at Main Street Station. I did like being offered the Fremont "run of the property food pass", and hopefully I'll reach that status after my next California visit (if they also offer it). They comped a meal at The Redwood, which was very nice, and back comped my paid for reservation in November.

Fremont rooms were designed and built decades earlier. Their standard room is doable, and if they put a $300 flat screen and updated the furniture, it could be a comparable room to their other two properties with the exception of the bathroom. The current bathrooms are too tiny with a few inches of counter space which makes it very cramped, even for a solo guest. Given the three options, I will continue staying and playing at The California, with occasional visits to the other two properties for VP and drinking.

Which property do you stay at and what are the suites like?

How many sq ft are they usually?

Out of the Cal, Fremont, MSS- which has the nicest suite in your opinion?

We only stay at MSS I have not had a suite at Cal or Fremont. They are pictures of the MSS suite near the beginning of this tread.

I don't know sq footage but it is basically twice the size of a normal room.

I have never been in a suite at MSS, but at one time was given one at the Fremont. Am not a suite type person, but the one at the Fremont was a larger room with a bed on one side and the couch/living room area on the other side. It was located at the end of the hallway.

I have been in a suite at the California Hotel on the side where you access the elevators close to the restaurant. We have been using one each of the past few years for a hospitality room when we have our yearly class gathering. There is a separate bedroom, which I have never accessed. The living room area is good sized which can comfortably hold about 25 folks. If I remember, I will take a picture in May.

Would you say the suite at the California is best you've been in?

By comparison, I would say the suite at California is far better and is like a one BR apartment where the bedroom is separate from the living/dining area. I think it was on the 23rd, the uppermost level and it seemed like the entire floor was suites. I can only compare it with the suite at the Fremont Hotel.
