    My Trip Report

Long time reader of these trip reports, so I thought I'd give one a go...

Will try to post a few live updates for my Dad and I's annual Vegas trip Feb 23-26th. Before that, a little background information. I know I’m a couple days early but wanted to get this history out there.

My Dad (D) and I have been going to Vegas since I was 21. We've made it an annual tradition that we both look forward to. I'll be celebrating 32 on the 21st, so we try to plan our trip around my Birthday. This year we're going to be celebrating the birthday, some good health news, and my last trip as a "free man" as I'm getting married on May 10th to my fiancee Brandi. I'm 32 and enjoy the finer things in life of gambling, smoking cigars and drinking.

My Dad is pretty much an older version of me minus the cigars. He too likes the drinking and gambling..and while he's not supposed to be smoking I often catch him "finding" cigarettes from old ladies. He retired from teaching at a local community college. We'll be leaving my Mom and Brandi behind, as well as his two dogs, which sometimes I thinks he wish they could pull the slot machines.

    History of getting to Vegas
The running joke is that it when we plan our trip, you can pretty much expect snow near that date, even if it's in March. Several years ago in March, we were heading up to KCI to catch our flight, freezing rain was starting to accumulate on the antenna of my explorer as we drove. I said, I'll bet we don't get out on time. As we get checked in and to the gate we notice several people running around. We then get messages from my mother telling me the airport has closed for the first time in 20 some years. Oh sure...this is starting out just perfect. I was able to put us on a flight about 6 hours later.

    The following year.....

We book the trip for late February and joke to ourselves, they'll probably close the airport...As we get closer to the trip, they start calling for snow....here we go again. D and I LOVE snow and we haven't got a lot in Kansas City recently, so while we want snow, we'd prefer it to wait until we get back.

As we head to the airport there are a couple inches of snow on the ground, nothing major was expected. D was confident we'd get off the ground and I should quit worrying (I tend to do this.) We get on the plane and get seated and get excited we might get out of here...Dad looks over and says "see you worry too much!" I said...just wait for it.... as we sit there, I hear the "tinging" sound of sleet hitting the roof and wing of the plane....Here we go.....I turn to my Dad and he again says....we'll be fine, we'll get out of here.

There are a couple middle aged Vegas Virgins in the 2 seater in front of us talking about how they hope we get out of here on time. I kindly lean up and say....you know....the last time my Dad and I were heading to Vegas, they closed the airport for the first time in 20 years.....why I told them this, I have no clue, but they laughed and said they would blame me.

We taxi out to de-ice, and head to the runway. As we're heading to the runway I'm willing to make my first bet of the trip betting my Dad we don't get off the ground as the snow/sleet is coming down. We turn onto the runway and hear the engines start to roar, we start to roll down the runway, when all the sudden the pilot throttles back the engines and explains they just closed this runway because it's too slick, so we'll go to the other runway, but....we need to de-ice again.

By this time the ladies in front of us have given me several dirty looks and I just shake my head yes and give them a wink. We de-ice again and back to the original runway, (they've got this one ready to go)we didn't get off the taxiway, the pilot came on and said the airport has been closed. We pull back to the gate and get off the plane.

The airport was closed for several hours, eventually we got to Vegas. I'm a big fan of being safe, so I'm not going to complain, but it is rather ironic.

    Pre-trip
We're heading out of KCI direct to LAS at 7:10am on Saturday. In the past I didn't like Southwest with their cattle calls, but since I travel for work I get free flights and it's the only nonstop, and with my luck the less stops the better.

    Weather
Kansas City is expecting a "major" snowstorm. Normally they say this and we get a trace to 2 inches of snow. Mind you no one knows how to drive in it, but it's nothing like they say. After two days of the news crews at the salt barns, we get to see them sliding on the sidewalk in an inch of snow.

Anyway, this time they are calling for 6-10" with more up north towards KCI. This should start Thursday morning on my birthday (great present!) and should be done Thursday afternoon. However....I can't help but think will it dump a record amount of snow on Terminal B at KCI and screw us again for Saturday? You wouldn't think, but....read above. Stay tuned for this update!

    Hotel
We're staying at the Flamingo, our usual place. We love the location, and since we are both diamond members, we've got a comped GO luxury room with a view of the strip. We're like most people, the room doesn't really matter though if it's clean. We also like the flamingo because we know the casino pretty well and really like Margaritaville and the drink service (since we've been going there so long they remember us and even after months one of them just sees me and brings me two beers at a time....do I drink too much?)

It's also nice staying here as my Dad doesn't get lost. For some reason he loses his bearings in casinos and I often find him wandering around with a cigarette he "found."

    Gambling
We are both what most would consider low rollers, about $250 a day for me.... certainly nothing like Nate! We play .25, $1 Video Poker, Slots, Keno and a little blackjack. For some reason I really enjoy Keno, and I'm still a little miffed that they got rid of the nice Keno area to build the new restaurant. I tend to bet $1 a pull on Keno and have quite a bit of fun doing it. I love to people watch, so I've observed who wins on keno and slots.

The older the woman the more she wins.
The old woman with the oxygen mask really wins
The old woman with the oxygen mask and cigarette REALLY wins. (I tend to keep a safe distance from these ladies)

We plan to go downtown as we enjoy the atmosphere down there, the freemont experience at night doesn't do much for us, but enjoy the old casinos. Overall we just like to have a relaxing time gambling and don't get too crazy.

    Drinks
One of our favorite things in Vegas is the drinks. Haven't decided my lineup yet, but we're probably going to need a sofa bed for our livers in the room. The days usually consist of breakfast cocktails, beer, scotch, gin, beer and some baileys.

    Couple of other observations/notes
    • We aren’t the crazy partying nuts, I know a lot of Vegas is, but I’m like an 80 year old in a 32 year old’s body. I get tired of hearing screaming idiots and tools…but…it is Vegas so I understand.
    • I’ve never been hit on/propositioned in Vegas….Last time I took my fiancée out there, some moron comes up and I’m sitting at the machine right next to her. I just stand up and offer a glare….mind you I’m not intimidating but still, come on! This happened a couple times. My Dad has had several ladies approach him, one was so pushy he tried to have me hide him.
    • More and more children are being pushed through casinos late at night. Still don’t understand this.

Great pre-trip report!! Happy Birthday, hope you have a great time. I'll be there the exact same dates, so when we stop at Bugsy's bar in Flamingo, I'll raise a silent little toast to you, wherever you are!!

Hey billb1981 - Good Luck! If you like Keno, I recommend trying out the video Keno at Bally's. It's just down the stairs and to the right from the main entrance. I have seen a lot of people winning in that area and a great place to people watch as it is right off one of the main walk ways.

Thanks for the kind words everyone! I have been to Ballys and played Keno, you're right it's a great location for people watching, I've had some fun there. I actually need to get over there as they owe me some money from last trip! :)

Just a quick update after the biggest snowstorm in a while in KC. Apparently someone thought I was leaving today! All flights out of KCI were cancelled after about 9am. Hopefully the airport will open back up tomorrow morning. We ended up with some thundersnow here, about 12" of snow across the metro.

Thanks, we'll be spending some time downtown for sure. My company has an office near there and I stayed at the GN for a week, lots of fun. I wasn't that impressed with the freemont experience, but I did enjoy 4Q's and their cigar bar, and also GN. I'll see what I can find down there.

    Friday evening update

So far flight is on time, checked in, heading to the airport at 5:00am, we'll see if we get out on time. Still hard to get out of my neighborhood due to the snow, but I'll put it in 4x4 and do my best!

Have a great trip! I lived in KC almost 15 years, and yesterday's snow storm was the biggest since February 1993, which I remember well. I worked in the west bottoms at the time and what a mess... Enjoy your Vegas trip! Tonight might be hard to get rest. My Vegas adventure starts next Thursday and time is standing still! I hope it does for your trip :)

    Enroute to Vegas!

A cold morning in Kansas City, 6 degrees. As we got to the airport, I forgot what it was like to travel on the weekends. Several folks not having any clue what they are doing, you sometimes wonder how they made it up to the airport or even managed to wear pants.

You can always spot the old ladies going to Vegas. Used enough hair spray and perfume to last them the whole trip and have on the furry coats, I plan on seeing these ladies later in the trip winning near me.

After getting de-iced we took off on time. Currently over the Rockies waiting for drink #2. The flight attendent made some remark about I must be married, I informed her it was coming up and we were here celebrating, she said congratulations and swiped my Southwest credit card....I've had a lot of free drinks on Southwest, so I guess I'm getting paid back for it. No free drinks on her watch.

We are a little cramped, using a bluetooth keyboard with a tablet is great except D is not too pleased that my elbow is in his boob. "Cut that shit out" has been yelled a few times. Reminder that the Rockies are often quite bumpy, they have put drink service on hold. Thankfully we each got our first one before bouncing around the sky.

Will try to send another update later, but it appears as though I have forgot my mifi card. Thanks everyone for the comments!

Thanks Bob. It is a great tradition!

    Day 1

After realizing I did forget my mifi, I was able to pair the phone with the tablet so I can write something up.

We decided to take the shuttle from the airport, did wait about 20 minutes, which is the only draw back, but we weren't in that big of a hurry. Got to the flamingo and went to diamond check in. Being 9:30am, they didn't have rooms ready so I grabbed a cigar, and we checked our bags with the bellman and off we went.

Hit the bar for some video poker. D wants me to spend some more time playing VP so I sit down with him. I order a corona and proceed to spill it on a machine. (Great). About 20 minutes into gambling D hits a royal flush on quarters! Great way to start the trip! He gives me a little of this to play some VP with throughout the trip. I'm keeping this $ separate so I make sure and spend it there.

Note here....I have horrible luck with VP, I play the odds and such but manage to get CRAP for cards. In about 20 minutes I'm down a quick $40. I finally get some play but 30 mins later down $60. I put in another $20 and was able to hit 4oak. This gave me a little hope and some extra cash.

Get a call the room is ready, but we aren't quite ready to check in. We venture down to Margaritaville and I sit down on a penny slot. Wasn't paying attention and I hit a minor progressive for $70. At this point I was up about $130. I move over to Keno and play there for a little bit. By this time I've had the 2 screwdrivers, 4 corona's and ordered a miller lite. I'm thinking it's time we eat something. We head over to the food court and have some pizza.

We check in, they had us in a room where you had to take the paradise elevators which meant long walks and perhaps construction. I asked for something that faced Ballys and the fountains and got a great room. Get things organized and head down for a ass slapping.

Lost a quick $60 in Video Poker, so I decicde it's time to get going on Keno. I lost a quick $60 there as well. I decide I should probably take a little snooze, so I took about a hour and a half nap and D came up after losing his shorts. They had to bring in a new load of booze after D, as he probably needed a nap.

We played some more in the evening, at some of the bars. Had another cigar and a couple scotches. We decided we would eat at Carlos and Charlies. Loud place, but everyone was having fun. Had a few more beers, then off to gamble for a couple hours before bed. I was down about $300 for the day when I finally had a decent hit on Keno. Hit 7/8 which paid a little over $400. Played a little more and went to bed. D wandered around drinking for a while and eventually came up.

I'm about even, but that will probably change today as it's our first full day in Vegas. I'm sure I'll lose my shorts but we'll see. Heading downtown today.

Hopefully I'll send another update tomorrow.

Thanks all for the nice words....

Currently flying back now, (one day later than scheduled but I'll explain that later.)

    Day 2- Sunday

Decided we'd go downtown for most of the day. I was down a couple hundred after losing some in keno Left the flamingo and decided to grab breakfast at Harrahs buffet. Food was pretty good, it was brunch and I ate too many odd things, bacon, eggs, prime rib, diet coke, milk, cinnamon roll, and a crab leg. Gambled a little bit and headed to catch the deuce.

Got downtown and the first place we wanted to go was the D. The place wsas really nice, I hadn't been there since the remodel. We went upstairs to vintage vegas. I always enjoy playing the nickel keno, betting a total of .80. I sat down and put a $20 in and hit $200. Thankfully anything over $50 did not come out in coins but paid by attendant. I cashed out up about $180.

We wandered around the various casinos making our way to MSS. I've been reading about the beers there, and wanted to try them out. We stood in line for a players card for about 20 minutes. There was only one person working, yet there were two managers standing by most of the time not helping. Oh well.

Sat down at boars head bar, and met Jose. I informed him that several people from the boards here really like him, and he got excited. I told him about how I liked micro brews and he insisted I try all four. I proceeded to drink four of these in an hour, which didn't go well with all the breakfast crap I ate, but....oh well. I hit 4OK and got a scratch off, as well as D. Each got $2. A woman at the bar hit a royal on quarters. I left about even and went to the restroom

When I got back is where the fun begins. As I mentioned earlier, my father has an issue with women coming up to him. When I got back, there was an old lady sitting where I was sitting next to him. I walked up and he was chomping a piece of nicorette gum and saying....uh we gotta go. This lady was what you call bat sh*t crazy. She was telling him all sorts of stories making no sense. I enjoyed this and took a step back to watch. He was ready to get the heck out of MSS. He was so nervous he forgot to tell me to pick up my cigar cutter, so I left it.

We proceeded through the golden nugget, played a little there and went to 4 Queens for late lunch at the Chicago Brewery. I'm a big fan of this place, the food is very good and the beers are pretty good too. D had a burger and I had their pizza. He hit 4 Deuces and we left to catch the Deuce around 5:30. I ended up even, and Dad was up a couple hundred. We went to walgreens and bought some snacks.

Back at the flamingo around 6:15, we decided we better take a nap. I'm not sure if we napped or passed out, but woke up around 10:30 and headed down to gamble for a bit. I managed to hit $400 on keno so this helped make me about even for the first two days.

In answer to your question regarding cigars...I like several, but one of my friends introduced me to Drew Estates Java....very good smelling and tasting. I had one of these a day, and also got some black pearl cigars.

On to day three, which includes Hooters promo, Terry Fator, bad cigar, Deal or no Deal, Sex and the City and Carnegie Deli, and another storm in KC?

    Day 3

Still in route to KC via Denver.

We got up and decided we'd head down to find one of the free play promos. I already used the one at cosmo a year ago, and trop was $200, getting $100 back that day, then $50 and $50 days 2 and 3. We didn't want to spend that much there, so decided to try the Hooters promo of $100, and then get back $50 at least, we weren't worried about days 2 or 3.

We took the monorail down to MGM and wandered around there a little bit. Had a drink and played a little keno. We each lost about $40. We decided to have breakfast at McDonalds there and then walked to Hooters. It was nice outside, cold for most of the locals, but I had a foot of snow at home, this was nice! Went to the rewards desk, nope, no promo. Not sure if that has been mentioned on here or not yet, but they did give us $10 in slot play. I lit up a black pearl cigar, and noticed right away it was peeling away a little. I proceeded to smoke it anyway losing $40 in keno. The wrapper came off the cigar, so it was smoking and for some reason stronger than heck. I think it looked like I was smoking a big terd. My dad thought I was nuts as I think smoke was rolling out the windows at the casino, but I was smoking it anyway.

We wandered back through MGM to catch the monorail to Ballys. I was down $100 after Hooters and MGM. We walked through Ballys, and found some keno machines. I lost another $60 in keno. Dad hit $400, I was getting slapped around. We decided to head to the bar for a little video poker. I lost another $40 here, and was getting angry. I don't mind losing when gambling, but give me a little play. Sat back down at a keno machine and managed to hit 810 quarters. So....I was a little bit up.

Found the community deal or no deal game. It's a lot of fun, and has a bonus every 12 minutes or so. You have to collect suitcases to get multipliers by the time the bonus game comes. I missed the first one as I just sat down. Next one I was able to qualify at 8x, and D was at 4. I picked case 2, and after a couple rounds the offer was $90. I took that because there were only a couple cases left. Of course.....my case had $50, so I would have had $400, but....what can you do. D had the opportunity to trade cases, but he didn't. He's still kicking himself. I cashed out ahead $100.

Went to the new Sex and the City group bonus machine. There were a couple guys sitting there, always odd but I didn't care, I like Charlotte darnit. I played for 45 mins, and was betting $2.50. I think I picked up $100 or so. I was up about $200 for the day.

Getting ready to land in Denver. I'll continue later.

    Day 3 continued

We walk back to the flamingo, and started to think about if we wanted to go see Terry Fator. We also had been watching the news and been getting messages from back home about another snow storm in KC. We thought there was no way we could get another big storm, but you never know. Just in case, we went into diamond check in and got our stay extended a night.

We then went to Casino Royale to look at tix for tonight. While we were standing there, we called the Mirage and just got some through them. I wasn't 100% sure where the seats would be and I didn't like the idea of getting vouchers for tickets.

We gambled in Casino Royale for about 10 minutes. Something about that place that makes me feel like it's too shady. The machines don't seem to pay out as much and there are way too many pictures of winners on the wall.

I was on my phone and noticed a text from SWA, saying there might be flight disruptions, so we could change flights without any fare difference. SWA is awesome about this. We pondered it for a while, as we had a 2:30 flight on Tuesday and KC was supposed to get hit with snow again Monday afternoon/evening. We were afraid if they cancelled the flight we might not be able to rebook on Wednesday, so we needed to start thinking. We had a couple scotches at one of the bars in the Flamingo, and went down the road to the Mirage for Terry Fator and to have dinner.

We ate at the Carnegie Deli. This is a must stop for us, as we love the corned beef sandwiches. I'll post a picture later. The meal was great and we then walked quite a while to get to the Terry Fator theater. There were HUGE lines to get a drink, and I saw several rude people which I guess is normal.

The show was amazing, he is very talented. During the show I'm getting updates on my Jayhawks and finding out they are cancelling the morning flights. As we walk back to the Flamingo, we figured we would go ahead and change. If you're going to get stuck somewhere Vegas works just fine. But...did I have enough money? I was down about $200 at this point, so for me that was pretty good.

Went down to gamble in Margaritaville. I had to wait forever for drinks, which normally wasn't the case. I was getting no play, and the two keno machines slapped me in the face. I was now down about $450. I took my grouchy ass to the main keno machines.

We were playing a bit and I was losing more, and finally hit $400. This helped the evening's overall bankroll. Went to bed knowing we had another day in Vegas.

Coming up on Day 4....Deuces sighting, Deuces Fighting, Don't throw anything away in Vegas, D takes a Deuce on Bill and Keno revenge.

Day 4- Extra day in Vegas, who let all the wackies out?

The day started out with me gambling away a quick $60 in Keno. We decided we'd go downtown again and try our luck. We had a great breakfast at the Tropical Breeze cafe. We then waited for the deuce. At this point, I had $300 of my $600 I had taken in cash with me. I thought I could last most of the day with this.

We went back up to the D and this is where I started to lose my shorts. I mentioned earlier that I like 5 cent Keno, because you can play a lot and not lose a lot. INCORRECT. I got very little play and in 25 mins I was down $100. Dad hit $200. I also noticed for the 2nd time an old group sitting at the live keno booth. They had a bag of lollipops and pretzels and some spray cheese. Whatever makes you happy I suppose.

We played at the long bar for a couple mins and off to 4Queens for some Chicago Brewing Co again. I had afew micro brews and another pizza and we played video poker and keno. After lunch, I headed for some 10 cent keno and proceeded to make about $20 back from what I was losing at the D. Dad sent me a picture, he had hit 4 deuces at the bar before he left so that helped.

This is where things seemed to start to get looney......

Dad had about 3/4 of a micro brew left in a plastic cup from the bar. We headed to catch the bus and so he tossed about 1/2 of it out in the trash by the deuce. He noted a man standing near the trash can yelling at him. I told him he shouldn't have done that, really ticked that guy off, he could have had some good beer! We sat at the top of the Deuce in the front. We watched another guy come strolling down the street and start shopping in the trash cans. I told Dad he was going to find his beer....sure enough he found it with about 1/3 of it left. I called it....he drank it, I enjoyed it.

We started back towards the strip when we stopped up by Stratosphere .....lots of yelling and cursing from a passenger. Apparently he had a 24 hour pass that expired and the bus driver wouldn't let him ride and took the expired ticket. This made the man very mad, and it sounded as if he was goign to try to pull the driver out and fight him. Next thing we were waiting for was a gunshot, it was that loud and crazy.

    Finally back to the Flamingo...

We cleaned up and went to the garden bar to play a little video poker and have a couple pre-dinner scotches. We ate at the center cut steakhouse in the flamingo. I had a strip and it was fantastic. Dad had scallops that were a little over-cooked but still good. I'm not a scallop fan, reminds me of cat snot.

After dinner we each took $200 and played various machines. We made it down to Margaritaville again, and we each hit $400 on keno with the money! Dad actually hit it again while we were there. We turned the $200 into about $500 profit for me and $800 for Dad. As I mentioned earlier today was a wacky day. I went to play more keno and Dad went to the garden bar which was closed for the night at this point. He sat down and played and hit 4 aces. He was having a pretty good day.

I came over to talk to him and sat down, some drunk idiot kept tapping me on the chair/shoulder, and I asked him what he wanted and he said oh nothing. My Dad said he was just drunk, and I said ok and moved on. I should have thought about this before leaving my Dad there. He's usually a very quiet person and minds his own business, but....this guy decided to sit next to him and wanted to "talk." Dad informed him that he didn't want to "talk" and that's when the kid (he was probably 25) let the language fly. My Dad is not a big guy, but he was a police officer and trained in martial arts etc, and I wouldn't mess with him. The kid stood up and my Dad stood up and Dad asked him if he really wanted to talk. Evidently at this point the kid didn't want to talk any longer and sat back down. My Dad eventually left and found security. Obviously just a drunk idiot, but at the same time you never know. Lesson: Don't mess with my Dad and his gambling.

Ended up back at Keno watching an old lady hit a hand pay of $1500. She was old and smoking.....2 of the 3 for my formula. She was a nice lady, I made sure to congratulate her. I hit another $100 or so, and ended up doing pretty good for the night. Lost a couple hundred for the trip, so that was a win. We had an early flight, so decided at about 1:00am I'd go up and pack.

We flew from Vegas to Denver then to KC. Everything went as planned. Overall we had a GREAT trip! Hope everyone enjoyed the report! :)
