Is it acceptable to color up mid shoe?

My last blackjack session went well. After maybe two decks into a six deck shoe I wanted to color up the minimum amount of winnings that I would leave the table with. I had no intention of leaving at that moment but just wanted to make sure I left with that amount. Since I didn’t want to slow down the game for the other players, I waited until the end of the shoe. Was I just being overly polite or did I do the right thing?

    What are your thoughts?

You did the right thing. If you were having a good shoe, then the odds say that everyone else at the table was also having a good shoe. I think it would have been somewhat impolite to stop play on a hot shoe just to consolidate your chips.

If you had to leave it wouldn't be wrong to color up. Since you were staying, you did the right thing. That would piss me off.

The dealers and the pit frown on people trying to partially color up during a game. Most times, they will ask you to wait to color all your chips up when you leave. Mainly so they don't slow the game down anymore than they have to.

Something that you could do without causing much trouble would be to slide a little more money closer to your bet (not in the betting circle!) and ask the dealer to give you a larger chip.

So, if you were betting $25 and won $25 more, slide $50 more out on the table and ask for a black chip.

I'd say you did it right. You can color up whenever, but if you're still gonna be playing at the table, its polite to wait.

I color up mid shoe all the time and then continue to play. I'm a red chipper, so once I make $100 (over and above whatever I bought in for) in red chips I'll ask for a black chip. I like this cause I usually buy in for $100 and once I get that black chip I know I'm not gonna give it back and I'll at least break even for the session.

The dealers usually appreciate this cause they run low on red chips sometimes.

I guess it would also matter a bit about how much you had to color up. A minimal amount may not be a big deal. Spreading out a few hundred reds, some greens, ones, etc could be a bigger deal.

Rather than color up, I usually just stash the chips in my pocket if I get a few that I want to make sure I don't give back. Then when I'm ready to go, I'll color up. It's a fairly easy way to make sure you leave the table with that money without disrupting the game. However, what you did is perfectly fine and IMO good table etiquette.

As others have said, out of respect to the others players you did right. But I colour up when I need to, especially if I have reached a pre-set quit point or a stop loss point I have set for myself. No point losing money unless you need to, but of course you could win as well. I have lost my planned win target in just a few hands by stopping longer than I should, I am now very disciplined.

There are some very courteous players and then there are the rudest people who table hop and think nothing of the rest of us as the jump in and out. The one thing I have learned over the years I have played is to ignore most of that 'noise' and just play my own game.

I'm not a card counter, but I know some people are and I make a point of always asking it is okay to jump in if I am joining a game mid-shoe. Not many people do that and I know some players really appreciate it. Here in the UK, table numbers are small so people jump in and out all the time, as in some casinos you are lucky to find one active table.

I might be alone here but IMO putting the chips in your pocket is frowned upon and most dealers will ask you not to remove chips from the table unless you are colouring up. Ive seen it happen many times and a dealer will then usually ask if you want a bigger value chip to which you can park off but remain on the felt.

Just what ive seen on pretty much every table.

It's bad luck to partial color in the middle of a shoe. Just wait until the shoe is over or you're ready to leave.

I like it when other players color up mid-shoe b/c it slows down the game a bit and saves me money in the long run. I'm not too worried about a shoe "cooling off" during the 30 seconds it takes.

You're right, but when its a hot shoe and the tempo of the cards seems to be in your favor my only qualm with anything slowing things down is it increases the chances of someone else jumping in and killing that tempo. It may not be rationale but that's the feeling I get. If a shoe is hot I just want to burn through it before anything screws it up.

I should have been more clear. When I 'stash' them, they are larger denomination chips than what I'm playing with. Example: if I'm playing at a $25 table and I win a split/double and I'm paid out in a black chip, every once in awhile I'll stick it in my pocket. I don't doubt that what you're saying is true(I can see it being more frowned upon if I were stashing $25 chips when that's the table minimum), but I've never had a dealer or put boss say anything about it to me.

Have never, ever seen this even once and I've been playing BJ for decades. You might be thinking of poker, but in bj, people color up all the time and stash big chips in their pockets. Also dealers have no authority over you at the table, they are basically robot dealers, unless you are rude or obscene to them or other players , they cant tell you diddly about how to play or act.

Yeah I think that's fine as it's a large chip so no reason to say anything.

    100% I'm not thinking of poker:rolleyes2:

This has happened on all of my trips (not to me as I dont ever pocket money until my time is up)

As i mentioned in the earlier post it's when a player starts to pocket lets say $50 worth of chips in $5 denominations that a dealer has said not to remove them and replace with a larger chip. I assume it's to do with his float (exact casino term unknown) and that he doesnt want to run out of the minimum bet type chips????

Would that make sense or have I been seeing things wrong after too many MGD's:evillaugh

This makes sense because otherwise they would keep running out of main chips people are using at that table. But if a dealer or pit boss ever gave you any grief about pocketing aka rat-holing large denomination chips from coloring up then you should tell them to go fukk themselves and get a new job if they want to give you advice on your money.

As someone who delivers chips to tables,I appreciate those that color up, saves me walking. Iv never seen a dealer yell at someone removing chips, I have heard them ask to color up so they dont run out
