Why are Vegas pools so cold?

Last trip to Caesars noticed the pools were exceptionally cold. Is this intentional or product of desert air?

 

I did not take the temp of the Bally's pool when I was there a couple summers ago but I believe Vegas pools are cooler (in the hotter months) because it is more refreshing and a relief from the outside temps.

 

A lot of the LV pools are cooler than one would expect due to lack of sunlight. Some of the pools because of the tall structures around them actually see very little direct sunlight, and of course deal with the cool desert nights.

 

It's because they're full of water.

 

Keep in mind pool water always feels colder on a hot day.

That's a marketing trick. They want you in the casinos, not in the pools

 

Good question. I never understood this. I no longer even bring a bathing suit even in the hottest months. Being from the northeast where pool season is about 6 weeks, temps can get high here but water doesn't have a chance to warm up....I look forward to warmer areas of the country and their pools. I find the ones in Vegas freezing. I prefer "bathtub warm" pool temps. Small properties in FL are my speed. When it is 110 during the day and 90 at night there is NO reason for the pool water to be that cold. I have always suspected they dump their ac water in the pool...at least that is what it feels like to me.

 

Maybe they just want to make sure that none of the dudes wear Speedos.

 

Could it be they don't have heaters?

 

When were you there? The hotter it is outside the colder the water will seem at first.

But I didnt find the Caesars pool particularly cold.

 

It varies from place to place. I stayed at PH and their pool is absolutely frigid. It was 110F out and I froze my ass off. I've stayed at the Mirage and Bellagio and their pools where much more reasonable.

The best is the hideaway pool at The Golden Nugget. That pool felt just warm enough that you could step right in without even the slightest shiver but still felt good on a hot day.

 

I also find it varies by property and sometimes by the individual pool at he same property.
Last summer at Aria one of the pools felt 10 degrees warmer than the other ones.
I found a similar situation at Bellagio.
I hate cold pools also.

 

I'm glad they are cold/cool and refreshing !
Nothing worse than a warm pool on a hot day.

 

This discussion has come up before, and people posted that some of the pools use chillers to cool down their pools. I researched it, and there are such things. It makes sense to me. I understand about evaporation and the feeling on your skin getting into a pool when it's 100+ degrees outside and the water feeling cooler, etc. but to me, what makes the most sense is actually chilling the water. I don't know if Vegas pools do it or not though.

 

Last May when I stayed at the Cosmo, the temps were in the mid 90s all week yet when I went to the pool I was absolutely FREEZING. Like literally shivering uncontrollably, and I'm definitely warm blooded. I think it's because the pool is on the 14th floor (or thereabouts) and it was windy up there.

 

I think the big difference in being able to enjoy the pool in Vegas is the sunshine. If it's cloudy or overcast, it doesn't matter if it's still hot, the water isn't going to get warm enough and your skin isn't going to feel the warm sun on it. Where I live, it's humid. So you're still sticky and hot even if it's overcast. That's my theory anyway.

 

I don't find the water temp of Bally's pool uncomfortable, but that's just me. Mid summer air temps are 100º F + and the water feels like about 75º. That's okay with me.

The only reason I can think of for the coolness of the pool would be that they are replacing the water that is evaporating under the high daytime heat with fresh water that is much cooler.

 

The cold water could be a good sign! Makes me think that 'new' water is continuosly being added to the pools to perhaps compensate for the evaporation factor.

About the only time I'll ever enter a pool anymore is in Las Vegas. I blame it on peer pressure and alcohol! When I was a teenager I worked several summers at a city pool complex. It had an olympic size pool and three smaller pools. One of my weekly jobs was to drain the resevoir in the filter house and then hose off several rows of fine mesh filters. A NASTY job! Within just a week the filters would be covered with a grayish gelatinous layer of sludge consisting of sweat, suntan lotion, hairs of all type, bird poop and bugs. And that's just the stuff we knew about!

Bellagio keeps its three pools at different temperatures, so they are heated and/or cooled year round.
