It was actually a meteor, not an asteroid. An asteroid hitting the earth would be catacylsmic - the last asteroid that hit the earth caused the extinction of the dinosaurs and a change in the entire earth's climate. Meteor showers, on the other hand, happen all the time and can be visible in the night sky. Most break up in the earth's atmosphere before they hit the ground. so a meteor impact like this is rare. The meteor didn't explode in the sky - that is the fireball caused by the friction of entering the earth's atmosphere - that is why most burn up before hitting. It must have been fairly large to have made that kind of impact.

Coincidentally, an asteroid WILL be passing by the earth later today, within 17,000 miles, which is considered a near-miss.

Years from now, survivors will point to this moment as the exact time and place the zombie apocalypse began.

Well we're making progress. For a while we couldn't even convince you people dinosaurs were real. Now how do we get you to accept the earth is round? :poke:

To nail down the answer to ”what is the difference between asteroids and meteorites”, it is their location. An asteroid is always going to be in space. Once it enters an atmosphere it becomes a meteor, then a meteorite if it hits the ground. A meteorite is always going to be on the ground. Each is made of the same basic materials: metal and rock. Each originated in space. The main difference is where they are when they are being observed.

While that is a very interesting article, if you google dinosaur extinction, everything says it was an asteroid, not a meteor. This article from the American Museum of Natural History specifically states that a meteor is not the same as a meteorite, and that an asteroid can collide with Earth:

I did learn a couple of interesting new things about meteors being cosmic dust and meteorites being pieces of asteroids!

This is a funny but learning thread. Tatterdema mentioned a comet, who else saw comet Haley back in the '80's? I hope to still be alive next time it comes around. Guessing it will be somewhere in 2050. Mr wiki jr7110 will know the exact date and time ;) :peace:

Most of the people that were injured stood at the windows watching the sky... and then *BOOM*.. there's broken glass all over their faces.

I think if an asteroid gets through our atmosphere then it becomes a meteor or meteorite. That is my understanding anyway.

The dinosaur extinction theory you are talking about is the asteroid collision theory. They key word being collision. It was an asteroid that collided with the earth, which made it a meteorite.
