I have definitely been in casinos where JW Red was the best scotch they'd comp on the floor...so I didn't drink scotch. Funny, but they will comp Glenlivet at the Wildwood casino in Colorado while you play $1 craps with 25x odds. When I asked the waitress for a single malt, not expecting anything, she went to the far end of the casino to another bar and came back with a bottle. I tipped her a red chip.
Ugh, I don't blame you, I hate Johnnie Red The thing about Johnnie Red is, it's not meant to be served straight - it's a mixer Scotch - by Johnnie Walker's own standards, Black is the lowest rung on the ladder meant to be served straight. Red is just abominable - For blends, I prefer Johnnie Black over Chivas - if I'm in a bar or restaurant that's not too upscale & I don't know what Scotches they have [or don't see or anticipate that they'll have many] Johnnie Black is my baseline go-to Scotch - and I also like Johnnie Gold - but IMO Johnnie Green & Blue are both overrated & overpriced - I think Johnnie Green is a muddled mess, and Blue - while exceptionally smooth - is just a little lacking in so many of the areas I expect a $200+ bottle of Scotch not to be lacking in [but don't get me wrong - I'll still happily drink it if I'm not paying for it LOL] While I don't care for Chivas 12, I do like Chivas 18, for the price I think it's the best value in blends. The other "premium" blends I really like [and also think are good value for the money] are Buchanan's 18 & 21-year Red seal - but I find they're relatively harder to find [for example, here in PA the "state" stores only carry the 18 by special order, and don't carry the red seal at all]. Of course, all that being said, I still prefer a single-malt to a blend - but that's a whole other long post - if not entire thread - altogether.
Bartenders don't know what a blind russian is because it's called a mudslide. They can come on the rocks or frozen. My preference is on the rocks. This was my drink of choice durning my 20's. Too many calories now that I'm in my 40's. I will still splurge in Vegas every once in a while.... Beth
Have to say I also love mudslides--but will only have one becasue as you mentioned the calories and also it just makes me too full
I have been to Vegas several times and really don't have a "goto" drink. But I do have a question: If I am playing at a local casino or downtown minus Golden Nugget, what would you say is the best brands I could get? I usually drink bourbon but sometimes vodka or tequila.
Ask for Maker's Mark. You can get it most places, and it's usually the best bourbon they'll comp on the floor.
I actually tried just ordering mudslides a few times. Well over half the time they had zero vodka in them and some of them actually added cream on top of the bailys.
Thanks for all the drink ideas everyone. I now have a list with 13 different drinks I MUST try. If I'm still alive after my trip, I'll give you an update on how it went.
tequila on the rocks with lime, white Russian or vodka cranberry and lime. I always ask for top shelf and half the time receive it. Or a no.
Makers rocks Jack and (diet) coke Beam and (diet) coke Crown and (diet) coke Shot of Jameson with a beer back (Amstel or Sam Adams) -- last time I did this at MGM, the cw brought me about 3 or 4 ounces of Jameson and didn't insist on taking that glass before she would give me the beer. Kahlua and coffee Bloody mary I often try to get a water along with drinks I order. I tip every time, and I'm polite, so most CWs will take care of me if they aren't slammed. If I don't do this, I hurt pretty badly the next day. The girlfriend gets cold easily and most places have really sugary, awesome hot chocolate, but as I understand it, these are really annoying for the CW to deal with...I tell her only order it if it's slow. I tried a sip of hers one time, and it definitely is sugary and delicious.
all over the map with drinks I like to start the day out with a couple of ketel one bloodies at the Cortez. Then coffee with a shot of Crown or Jim Beam rye. Then straight coffee, cranberry juice and a water for breakfast. Then Sam Adams or dark beers. Then coffee and water at lunch. Then Sam Adams or dark beer. Then a manhatten at dinner. Then I will close out the evening with vodka cranberries or matadors. A matador is a Jose and diet coke with lime. Then after I get home from 4-5 days of this routine, I don't drink for about 2 weeks.
What Kind of Comped Beer (or Drink) do you Have in Vegas? I see so many people drinking cheap beer (i.e. Miller Lite, Bud, Coors, etc.) when getting comped drinks at a slot or table, and it leads me to this question... What Kind of Comped Beer (or Drink) do you Have in Vegas? I drink my share of Miller Lite and Coors at home, when I have to pay for it, but when I am in Vegas and getting a comped drink, I reach for the stuff that would cost me $8 at a bar back home in Chicago. Amstel, Heiniken, maybe something local, and anything premium is what I go for when getting a comped drink.
Before 7:30 am: Screwdrivers (Kettel One) After 7:30am: Budweiser, with the occasional Vodka/Cran (again Kettel) On occasion: A glass of Patron with a lemon slice. And one Strawberry Julius from the Bellagio each trip.
Just got back, and enjoyed some Sam Adams, Michelob Ultra and several Bloody Marys. (I started winning while drinking them and just kept it up). The best beer I had though was at MSS, the High Roller. Also sampled a few at Chicago Brew Co. at 4Q. Ask for Kimmie!
Being from the east coast ( this will sound CRAZY) when drinking beer REGULAR COORS. It does taste different from the one we get here. Must be because the Coors out there is from Colorado. Not so here in CT land. I have also done Amstel, Stella and for mixed drinks ( per se) Amaretto Coffee, LI Iced tea etc......That said if i oder while playing an upper end drink shot or beer i do or would tip accordingly. For a Coors or a Vodka and Club-- house- give a usual buck or so.
Makers, Woodford Reserve, Knob Creek (on the rocks or with a splash of coke) or something similar if they'll comp it. If not, Jack & Coke or Beam & Coke. Occasionally I'll do Jameson's neat (I ordered a shot once and they brought me like a 4 oz pour. Glad I was sober enough not to shoot it!) or crown and redbull. If I'm in a beer mood, Amstel Light is usually what I go for, because it's light and goes down easily.
