OK, so I read the US Postal Service is finally electing to pull the plug on Saturday mail delivery, as part of some sorely needed cost-cutting measures.

The article indicates it's receiving mixed reaction! Wha? Is there anyone under 70 that has an issue with this? I'm dying to hear what I may be missing... I just can't for the life of me understand how this is something that's a problem for anyone.

Even for things they would never use or never miss, there are a lot of people that get very upset over having things taken away from them.

But especially today this is just one of those things... most personal correspondence is by email, text or just phoning somebody and if you are really keen on having your bills as soon as possible most companies, if not all the major ones, should have electronic billing available where you can either see it online, have it emailed to you or have a central online box that will collect all your bills in to one website.

I think the folks in Bug Tussell may have an issue, but eliminating Saturday delivery will save $2 Billon a year, it has to happen.

sounds like I won't be getting bills on saturdays anymore... .awesome.

I think they proposed this like 2 or 3 years ago...and do saturday deliveries for overnight mail only.
If I recall correctly they also proposed to deliver mail every other day.... so if the mail carrier came to your neighborhood today, they would hit a different area tommorow (so you would get mail mon, wed, fri or tues, thurs, sat).... this would effectively cut the number of mail carrier jobs in half.
But instead they opted to cut some carriers' jobs and give the remaining carriers a slightly larger area. They also opted to give early retirement with bonuses for retiring early just to cut jobs without laying people off.

Canada just got rid of it this week.

But people still complain... if your change due back has 1 or 2 pennies then they round down, if its 3 or 4 pennies then they round up. Its not been a week and people are already complaining that it seems they are being rounded down more often or that retailers have adjusted prices so that they round down in the retailers favor. Its just a penny, but people are still getting upset about it!

It's a shame it's taken until now to make it happen.

More people need to recognize how lucky we are.

My first real job was "paperboy".
You wouldn't believe how ANAL some people were/are
    about their delivery !
They'd be upset if you delivered a half hour late --
but would NEVER be upset if I came around for payment +
    they weren't available.
    .
The WORST job I EVER had was working for the Post Office -
Letter carrier. I hated it -- thank god I got a better job after 6 mos.
Again, people were SO ANAL about their mail.
    .
So....yeh......I can believe some @holes are upset abot no Sat. mail.

While they're at it, why not reduce delivery to every other day? Think how much money that might save!

Well it's bad that some are gonna get hours cut..I seemed always to get junk mail always on saturday..So I guess the postal carrier will work a little harder since he or she will be carrying that extra weight on friday or saturday..

I would love to tell you what you're missing, but it is totally a political argument and I would get a wrist slap.

There is a very simple reason the PO is running a deficit and w/o that mandated reason, they would have a surplus. :peace:

    I'm with Joe --

I agree with Turtleman. Monday-Wednesday-Friday works for me....unfortunately much of the mail has become synonomous with spam.

Really? I haven't been hearing any complaints.

As for those complaints, its is tough for most retailers to price things that way, because if you bought two items that were both priced so as to get the rounded down change, they would be rounded up instead.

And if people raid their many penny jars and carry a few with them, they can selectively pay with pennies to avoid the rounding when it isn't in their favour.

As for the US, I find it hilarious that the states has a lobby group run entirely by the zinc suppliers to the mint trying to "save the penny" with misinformation.

People that complain about jobs that are overpaid wouldn't do that just most the time. Getting you your mail in any weather and dealing with some of those stupid dog owners is something I wouldn't have much fun doing I would think. Of course I cleaned toilets for 27 years of other peoples kids and I'm sure they thought I was way overpaid.

I appreciate the posts where people resisted making political statements. This is one of those topics that runs close to the line. As long as we keep it to discussing mail and mail delivery, we're good.. once we start arguing about taxes and government policies, we've not so good and I have to get out the thumping stick. :wink2:

Thanks for keeping the thread civil.
