I read on line about how to figure out
if you need a new clutch.
I didn't seem to have any of those symptoms that
    were stated.
    .
    But -
It's damn diffulcult to get the stick in gear.
Could it be the real cold temps we've had ?
    .
My truck is real old 145k ( '98 Chevy SS )
It's on it's second clutch - installed many years ago.
    .
I know I should just bring it in to a shop --
but......I always think they'll just say "Yeh, you need a new one."
    No matter what.
    .
Anybody know something ?........before I bring it in ?
    Thanks

I just made a quick call to a shop I've used before.
Guy said "It might be a hydraulic problem."
    .
    That sounds right ---
I had to replace a rusted gas line this past summer.
Maybe, the hydraulic line is rotted, too ?
But I haven't noticed any fluid under the vehicle -
    Maybe, I haven't looked closely enough ?
    .
    He's looking up a price ---
    What's a ballpark cost ?

If it is the cold temps, the problem should go away after the truck warms up. It could also be low on fluid for the slave cylinder, check the fluid level. It is a small plastic cup next to the master cylinder under the hood.

Do you have an oil leak? Oil soaking into the clutch material could cause it to swell and not allow the clutch to disengage for the flywheel completely. Best suggestion, do some research and find a reliable mechanic to check it out for you.

    Hope this helps

It might just need a good cleaning and change the rubber bushes underneath the gear shift. You're talking about first gear right? It's reluctant to go into first?

Sounds like the throw out bearing. If so you should hear a little "noise" as the tranny is warming up.

I am in the manual tranny business and here is my take on it.
If you started having trouble shifting into all gears and not a progression of problems starting with reverse and first then I would suspect the hydraulics. If it was a problem that started with reverse and first gear then I would suspect the clutch. Either way you have to remove the tranny to replace the slave cylinder or the clutch. So while the tranny is out I would replace the clutch and hydraulics to save the labor down the line. The master cylinder is the only thing you can replace without removing the tranny.

I'm with Molder66 on this one. I've had it happen a couple of times. You press the clutch all the way to the floor, but it does not completely disengage. If that's it, it might be an easy fix. I don't know about your truck, but on my Mazda Miata the slave cylinder is a $25 item and is easily replaced without removing the tranny. The toughest part of the job was bleeding the line. Good luck! I hope it's cheap and easy for you.
