One of the hardest things to do is to walk when you're ahead. That's just human nature, to want to keep going and hit that next jackpot. But if you've already hit a nice jackpot, or had a nice run on the table then why stop there?

Discipline is the order of the day, to have the guts to quit. But how do you do it? Well, if you put a few bucks in your pocket and leave it there, then when you piddle out you'll have a win locked up. If you keep winning then you are lucky, so you put a few more bucks in your pocketbook and play on.

I use a loss limit. I buy in with a hundred bucks, and if I am down 50% I stop. I know I'm on a losing streak. Will my luck change if I hang in there? Well, it never has.

On the flip side if I'm winning, I play on but rat hole a profit.

I had a good run last weekend, but my wife managed to put everything I won back in and then some. At one point, she had won enough to pay for the whole trip. But, when it comes to Wheel Of Fortune, it's not about if you win or lose, it's how many spins you get! Right?

If I can't get my own wife to listen, then how can I get any of you to see it?

Well, I can't. But a select few, and only a few will ever see it.

I look at it like its not a given that i will win and when I do its like lightning striking.

Never hits the same place twice so i cash out and leave.

To think you can hit another jackpot is how they want you to think.

I've gotten much better in the last few years about not putting my winnings back in. Any machine I play I start out with a low $20 to see how it's playing. If I double my money or better I print the ticket and put in another $20. If that goes, I'm done at that machine.

I have to admit my Vegas trips are definitely more fun when I go back to my room and pull out a bunch of tickets even though I'm out of that days cash budget!

EVERY jackpot gets turned into a TITO and put in my pocket. I may continue on the same machine but doing that "re-sets" my mentality to playing from my budget, which is a helpful break point.

This is the same way I follow, once I get up to $300 above my buyin I cash out and insert a new buyin with new cash and pocket the TITO. One time I had 5 tickets cashed out all with a $300 or larger win, one significantly higher, in addition to the buyin and I went in my pocket to put in another buyin stake and had no cash left, :evillaugh

The discipline comes when your buyin is gone to walk and start fresh after 5 mins of walking to cash in your TITO and inserting new cash buyin.

Both my husband & I will cash out if we get a good spin or hit a bonus. We play a lot of craps and we always leave the table with more than we bought in with. I know that we are lucky when we gamble. We are also grateful and appreciative when we win. We don't make the crazy bets when we play craps and when we hit a good spin or bonus on a slot machine that puts us up a couple of hundred (or more) we cash out, take the TITO to the cashier cage, get the money and leave the casino.

I think part of our good luck is that we tip our dealers and CW like crazy, and we know that what we win is just borrowed casino money and we spend most of it on our nice dinners, bar bills at Hyde (LOVE the fountains), and the like. Should the day come when Fortune spreads her legs for us and we win a BIG jackpot (here lion kitty, kitty) we would take THAT money home with us.

This shows how long I've been gambling - I learned my system from a VHS tape I rented from Blockbuster on gambling.

No matter what game I play, BJ, Craps or slots, I buy in and put asside 25% of my stake as walk away cash. For example, I sit down with $500 at a BJ table and put $125 in a pile, that's my "stay" pile. The rest is my "play" pile. When I win a hand I put 1/2 my winnings in my stay pile and 1/2 in the play pile. When my play pile is gone I walk away. I don't always wait for the play to be zero, if I am doing well and just feel the luck turn I walk away. Only if I need cash for a double down or split do I dip into the stay pile. In craps it's easy to use the dividers on the rail.

It was easier to do with slots when you used coins. It would pop out coins and I would have two bucks. Now with the tickets I cash them out and put 1/2 away in a separate zippered pocket of my purse. It is a bit more difficult with slots to not press that button again.

I never count my stay pile until I get back to the room for the day or session. I cannot say I stick by it every time but it has served me well over many years.

One funny story: I was at a $5 crap table years and years ago. Every win I would put 1/2 the red chips in my pants pocket. I was standing next to the stickman who was watching this process. My pants were starting to get a little heavy and the stickman leans over and says "hey, lady want to color up some of those reds before your pants fall down?" I was a bit embarassed but thrilled to put a few black in my pocket.

I don't play enough craps to know all the nuances but isn't it frowned on to remove chips from your rack and put them in a purse or pocket during play (I think the term is "ratholing")? I don't think it's breaking any law or formal rule - but has to do with getting rated. I always understood that when you are getting rated, they keep an eye on your chip rack - and putting away chips makes it seem like you may have lost more than you did.

Does anyone else know if this is the case - or did I hear wrong on this?

This was back in the 70s or 80s. I wasn't worried about rating at the time. It was a whole other ballgame back then.

You heard right. The reason people say the pit doesn't like it is because part of their job is to keep an accurate accounting of the chips.

However I think the negative effect people say it has on players is way overblown. A couple of reasons:

    1) How often do you think a pit boss is going to be so pissed you pocketed some chips that they actually go back into your rating and intentionally lower it? In fact, part of their job is to accurately rate you in the first place.

    2) If ratholing helps you manage your money and control your losses, the positive benefit you get from it would be way higher than any negative effect from a possible understating of your play for comp purposes. Your comps are maybe 30% of your theo, even if the pit boss decides to screw you over by 20% that is just a reduction of 6% of your theo in comps. And your theo is generally a fairly small number for table players (e.g. maybe a bet per hour in blackjack or craps). Any money management technique you have will be worth far more than the possible comps you lose if the technique actually works for you.

    3) At craps especially it is hard for them to notice anything unless perhaps you're a much bigger player than everyone else at the table and for example are getting paid in yellows and flags while everyone else is getting paid in red, green, and black.

I will pretty much gamble until my buy-in is gone or until I double it. Once I double it, I press like a mofo with house money to see where I can get and if I drop back down to double my winnings, I stop. I don't set an upper limit of winnings that I will walk from, but I will do "crazy" (for me) bets if I'm way ahead. So if I buy in with $200 (again, low stakes gambler here) and I'm up to $500, I might start betting $50 a hand/roll to see if I can quickly move things up.

Ratholing annoys the boxman. I've asked a couple who I had good working relationships with. But it's not illegal, nor in any way against the rules. And if you're tipping, that will outweigh any annoyance factor involved.

Your win-loss is part of your rating, but it's a very minor part compared to your average bet and time played.

ben jammin...i actually do what you have said , took your advise ...i play 1/2 my buy in if i lose that i stop and play another time
if i am winning i set some aside and will not play that amount , at least not at that session ..
i was recently in tunica for 3 nights and using that system i was able to play plenty of craps for 3 days/nights and go home even....to me that was a win , even got a few comped meals
the upcoming vegas trip may be another matter !
