I am visiting LV for the first time with my 11 year old. Staying at MGM, thought the pools would be great.
We are both vegetarians, just wondering if anyone has any recommendations on which buffets are great for vegeterians?Any place close to the MGM?

I've heard MGM has a nice pool with a cool lazy river that the kid should enjoy.

The buffets at Planet Hollywood, RIO and Wynn will all have some extra vegan options.

To MGM the closest of those three would be Planet Hollywood, though the MGM buffet is pretty big so it is likely to have a selection of vegan options as well.

I LOVE Vegas. There are a lot of things I would like my kids to see there: the Bellagio fountains, all the huge buildings, the street performers, Caesars Palace to name a few. However, even at 15, I don't feel comfortable taking them.

There are so many things in Vegas that I don't want my kids around; drunk people everywhere, half naked women (or topless), porn being passed out on the strip.

I'll wait until they are 21 and if they want to go, I will take them. Even though we usually stay at the Orleans and there are lots of activities there for teenagers, I still can't bring myself to take them. I personally don't think it's a good idea to expose young children to all of that.

There are some places in Vegas I'm sure you will enjoy. I personally believe it's impossible to protect young eyes from seeing inappropriate behavior in Vegas. I'm sure your child will have a lot of questions while you're there.

In case you are not persuaded & are still going - there are a few Indian restaurants that have vegetarian options around the strip & one near MGM. Sonya has a pinned Vegetarian dining thread, start there.

If meals are your main concern you might want to move to Wynncore - there is Vegan dining options in all or nearly all his on-site restaurants.

If your 11 yr old's entertainment is your main concern you might want to move to Circus-Circus. There is just more for him to do there.

Some pools in Vegas can be very 'adult' fyi.

I wouldnt worry about the MGM pool for being too adult. Just try to avoid the area in the back where the entrance to Wet Republic is. There is definately drinking at the pool(and that goes for any vegas pool) but I saw a lot of families and children at the pool when I was there in August. Its a fun pool to hang out at but I wouldnt call it a party pool. And it is so large that if you dont like the people or whats going on in one area, you can just walk over to a different area.

MGM is a good location. Make sure to hit the Shark Reef at Mandalay Bay, and get down to Mirage for the dolphins and big cats. And my biggest suggestion for taking any kid anywhere, buy them a digital camera. It doesn't have to be a $500+ DSLR. Just a little $50-$100 camera. No end of crazy stuff in Vegas to take pictures of. :D

I swam with the dolphins and had a blast. I agree with the camera and might chime in to make the camera an Ipod touch and have games and music handy for when your child wants a break and down time.

Maybe stop somewhere once you arrive and buy fruits and stuff before you hit the hotel.

My son was 11 when we took them to Vegas...they liked the M&M world at MGM too. He also rode the rollercoaster at NYNY with my husband. Best picture EVER.

FYI -- have a conversation about the porn slappers before you get there...you just can't avoid it unfortunately!

I'm vegetarian too but my husband isn't so when we go I pretty much just eat whatever, wherever we go. But I have heard that Wynn has some good Vegan/Vegetarian options and at most of the noodle places you can find tofu and vegetarian options.

    have fun!

Sorry I am not a vegetarian so I have no advice to offer, but I do have one request...

Please do come back and share your trip experience with us. There have been many posts on here about whether or not to take kids to vegas, and since you will have first hand experience we would like to hear your take.

I will definitely post my trip experience!

I am still a little apprehensive about taking my child to Vegas, and have taken note of the unsavory things that they will probably be exposed to (porn card handouts etc).
I am actually a conservative parent, but am aware that they are one or another exposed to things on tv,at school, via peers etc. I have tried to answer my daughter's answers in a way that is informative without being an information overload and at her maturity level.

Anyway, i have planned a lot of things during this short trip, including shows,Adventuredome, Titanic Exhibition, etc.

These 2 family friendly hotels certainly are a safe bet. they provide excellent family focused entertainment, fun for all shows and things to do, as well as an amazing attitude towards families.

Here are two hotels that should be your choice:

    :peace:

Have a great time in VEGAS!

    Thanks!

I appreciate all the helpful tips.
I wanted to share something my daughter said to me yesterday, she told me that she feels so lucky to have a very caring parent who does not shy away from her questions and provides answers in a logical way (okay not sure i am the most logical person). She told me that she loves the travelling we do and appreciates that i dont' think the worst, whenever she has questions. She also told me that she absolutely agrees with me that our bodies are a gift given from the highter power to use in a way that does not disrespect the gift. So,i not sure about many things, but feel great hearing her say things that took me a lot longer than 11 years to internalize!
Really looking forward to Vegas now!

    Hi All,
This is my first post on this board so where better to jump in than right into the fire :evillaugh

Prior to last year, I was always of the opinion that I would take my kids to Vegas on their 21st birthday but no sooner, LOL. Then came an opportunity that I couldn't pass up. Front row tickets to see Elton John last October. My kids were raised on his music and I have tried in vain to get them up close at concerts near us and have never been able to. So off to Vegas we went.

We flew in Friday afternoon and came home on Sunday. We stayed at NYNY because it is my go-to hotel (I love the guys at the piano bar there).

I took them downtown on Friday night but it was too crazy for them. On Saturday we went to the Secret Garden at the Mirage. Saturday night was the concert. Sunday we saw the Titanic exhibit at Luxor. The kids were tired from full days of touring the hotels so they turned in early both nights.

It turned out to be a wonderful weekend and my kids (ages 9 and 14) were prepared in advance for what they might see there. We had no issues at all except for one guy on the strip trying to convince my daughter (14) to come to a club. He disappeared quickly when I turned around and went all mama-bear on him :nono:

For what it was, the trip was fine. I doubt the kids will have a reason to go back before they are 21 though. But to dance on stage next to the piano at the concert, watch Elton John shake my son's hand (and give me and my daughter a high-five) and have the percussionist throw my son the drumstick, the trip was priceless.

Now on to my next girl's getaway next week. Woo Hoo - no kids!!
