This may sound like a stupid question but here goes. As a fairly novice VP
player I was wondering how you figure out which VP machine has which payout...such as the difference between 9/6, 8/5, 10/7, etc. I know about the VPFree2 site but I guess my question is when you are about to play a VP machine, how do figure out which it is? We are going to Vegas soon and would love to give VP more play this time. Any help would great. Thanks in advance.

hmm, the 9/6 etc always refers to Full House/Flush pays with one coin in. So you should be able to see this on any video poker machine. Sometimes, it might be on a different screen but there is a paytable button somewhere you can push to see the paytables. The picture on the vpfree2 homepage is what you should be looking for on a machine.

You need to look for a "help", "paytables", or "info" screen. Make sure to look at the entire paytable, as some machines will short you someplace other than the full house or flush. For instance, I've seen 9/6 Jacks or Better machines that pay 2500 instead of 4000 on a royal. Ouch!

The simple answer is: you need to look at the pay table, which is usually right above the play area on the screen.

The numbers above usually represent the payout for the full house and flush hands with one credit bet, IE: for 9/6 Jacks or Better you want to see the flush pay 6 and a full house pay 9 on one credit bet.

However, there is a lot more to it than that: That "9/6" is the optimal pay table for Jacks or Better, but other games like Deuces Wild, Bonus Poker, Double Bonus Poker, etc will have different numbers. As an example if you are in the casino and just checking pay tables and find a "9/6" machine you might think "hey great, I found a full pay machine" but if thats a Double Bonus Poker that isn't full pay (full pay Double Bonus Poker would be "10/7")

There is some good information about pay tables at videopoker.com: http://www.videopoker.com/learn/pay_tables/

If you are staying right on The Strip --
make sure you check those paytables.
The Strip has notoriously BAD paytables.
    .
While waiting for "Jersey Boys" to start --
My wife + I walked up to a ( Venetian ) casino floor bar --
I almost choked on my beer when I saw
the bartops were ALL 6/5 JOB paytables. :nono:
    Unbelieveable :grrr:

You also need to pay close attention to the game descriptions on VPfree (or any other source).
    For example :

    >> 9/6 Bonus Deluxe is rated at 99.64 % (full-pay)
    >> 9/6 Jacks or Better is rated at 99.54 % (full-pay)
    >> 9/6 Double Double Bonus is rated at 98.98 % (10/6 is full-pay)
    >> 9/6 Double Bonus is rated at 97.1 % (10/7 is full-pay)

    And ... 8/5 Bonus is rated at 99.17 % (full-pay)

Bartops almost always have worse paytables than other machines in a given property (not always, but mostly.) Many machines these days change paytables depending on what coin you select.

For example, if you're playing quarters you might be at 6/5 (although that's epically bad) but if you play dollars it might be 8-5. More often you'd see 7-5 as the worst, then up to 8-5 and up to 9-6 if you're playing $5.

The paytables on the strip are bad if you play small. If you play bigger you can find better paytables.

Reading the COMPLETE pay schedule is very important. Novices often only look for 9/6. Looking only at full house and flush can cost you. Here are a few examples.

    7/5 Joker Poker 95.81% to 101%

8/5 Super Double Double Bonus Poker 99.69%

    9/5 Bonus Poker 100.32%

    9/6 Nevada Bonus Poker 94.85%

10/7 Luck of the Draw Poker 92.54%

Is there any where on the strip where we can find a decent JOB .25 pay table?

According to "VPfree", New York New York still has these 8 machines with 9/6 JOB : "a few rows in front of hotel registration (no points)".

All other JOB on the Strip for quarters will be less than 9/6.

I have played those machines at NYNY. They do exist. Aside from that you can find 8/5 bonus in Casino Royale, and though not ON the strip, Gold Coast, Orleans, Ellis Island and LVH have decent vp and are easy to get to from the strip
