No more free WiFi at MSS

Effective December 15th they removed the free WiFi inside MSS in the Player's Club area.

I guess they want you to spend the $9.95 per day for in room WiFi.

 

Wow, that's pretty crappy. The free wi-fi in the lobby area has always been one of the nice little perks for staying at MSS.

Can that $9.95/day (in-room) be comped by a host with any specified amount of play ? OR ... can it be paid with B-Connected points ?

 

Not sure about points, but I was already told by management that the hosts can't comp the WiFi in the room.

 

Damn, thats why I booked MSS over the Cal in 2 weeks. Oh well I got my phone.

 

Lame, but not a decision factor for me. Staying at MSS for two nights in Jan and don't care about their wifi.

 

I saw this a couple of weeks ago. I sent a tweet to them to confirm... never heard back... again?

Side note: I have sent them several tweets with questions... never an answer... with all their hoopla about Boyd Gaming Social Media this summer one would think that they would have a clue?

I guess they think that social media is only for one-way spam or a one-way promotional tool for their occasional contests. So 1990's... "social media" infers a multi-directional communications medium?​

Anyway; I usually stay there to gamble and attend conventions, have always appreciated the ability to drink coffee or have a beer in the lobby area while doing "business" and "people watch" with the free WiFi. Now I will have to do this all by myself in the room... might as well be in a boring Cincinnati hotel.

Does the Cal have free WiFi in their lobby... someone on another board claims they do... I have no idea?

 

I guess you can look at it both ways, but it seems to me as more and more people get smartphones with data usage limits, you would see more places offer fre wifi to get people inside their establishments. I still have unlimited data from AT&T, so this really has no bearing on me, but the greed of $$$ is just too much for most hotels and businesses it seems these days. Really is a shame, because providing a number of routers and access points isn't a cost issue, the bandwidth can be, but that's where room fees should have it built in if u ask me!

 

The hotels are just trying to find a revenue source to replace what they used to receive from guest usage of the room telephones.

 

While revenue was also a factor in this decision, I also think that the widespread knowledge of MSS having free wifi may have played a part in this decision. Many people that weren't staying at MSS were probably taking advantage of the free wifi and so MSS probably didn't want to just give it away to everybody.

yeah, too bad, I didn't think that the service was being abused so it is unfortunate that they cut it off.

We have always stayed at MSS and the free WiFi was a great bonus. Now that it’s gone, does anybody know it there is someplace, within walking distance, that we can go for free WiFi when we are staying downtown?

 

McDonald's at the Plaza should have it. Someone else thought they heard The Cal had it in the lobby, but I never saw a confirmation of that. I would also doubt it since Cal & MSS have the same management team and GM.

 

They don't have it there. Many of the McDs that are located in casino/hotels don't have it either.

 

Not to hijack the thread, but we recently "discovered" that our G2 smartphones have a "Tethering & Portable Hotspot" setting that can be used to essentially create our own WiFi network. With WPA2 encryption and 4G speeds, we can connect and surf with the laptop or iPAD just as with most unsecured WiFi hotspots from nearly anywhere we have cell phone service!

Of course, you need a phone that includes this feature, an unlimited (or generous) data plan, and a provider that doesn't get too bent out of shape. And while this may or may not be suitable for long international conference calls over Office Communicator or Skype (Ms. Gecko does that),it will definitely make life simpler for us and cut down on purchasing in-room Internet.

 

While I don't consider this a short walk for WiFi, the Las Vegas Library at 833 N Las Vegas Blvd does have free internet. My brother walks there all the time from MSS. Of course he's not much of a gambler.

I guess I would pay the $9.95 for in room WiFi if I needed it that bad.

It's about .8 miles from MSS and I would only walk there during the day.

Maybe, but there were never more than a couple people at a time using the wireless service in that area during the many "thrilling" Big Kahuna Slot Tournament sessions I have endured.

 

Their in-room WiFi service used to be provided by an outside company. If you had any problems you had to call that company, not the front desk etc.

Now that they have switched to Cox, the price for in-room service remains the same~$9.95 per day, but I suspect they are getting a cut of the money now so they want to encourage people to pay for the in-room service. That is just speculation on my part.

But now if you have WiFi issues in the room, you can actually/supposedly get help using the TV menu and somehow contact Cox Cable that way.

Stayed there 6 times in 2012, 4-5 nights each time and never saw a time where there wasn't room at a table to use the free service. I don't think supply and demand plays into this at all. Just another way to try and raise revenue. IMO

I asked the GM if the host could comp the room WiFi and was told no!
