I am staying 2 nights at Cosmo, then moving downtown Friday night for my 30th bday. I'm reading some reviews and starting to second guess staying downtown on Friday night. Would I be better off staying on the strip and just cabbing it downtown to party?

Can you explain a little about why you're having reservations/second thoughts about downtown on a Friday night? The more specific you are, the better we may be able to help you.

As a 32 year old guy, I am a big fan of downtown. I imagine you could have one helluva good time bar hopping downtown from under the FSE canopy and over to downtown 3rd and Fremont East.

I'd suggest getting a Cabana Room at El Cortez for the night. They're pretty swanky for downtown, inexpensive, and right around the corner from the Fremont East nightclubs. That's what I did two weeks ago, and it was an awesome place to crash after a night of mischief.

When staying in Las Vegas for a Friday night its going to be a lot cheaper to stay Downtown than on The Strip...

But that said: we split up our trips like this a fair bit, doing some nights downtown and then other nights at one of the big resorts. The advice I'd generally offer is that it is probably better to do the two nights Downtown first and then move to Cosmo for the last two nights.

Reason being: going from a lower quality room to a much nicer room will feel like a nice step up on a vacation... but in reverse, going from a nice room to a shabby low quality room, not so much.

I've been really excited to check out the plaza since it's been remodeled and now I keep reading bad reviews about it. Every time I go to Vegas I say I'm going to stay downtown, so this time I decided to go for the night.

How is hash house at the Plaza compared to the one on the strip?

What is fun to do during the day Downtown?

I stopped downtown before I flew out last month to get my sons t shirts. It was a ghost town. People were pushing brooms down the street and sidewalks. I am not sure how busy the casinos are during the day, I went to the old Pioneer and got the shirts and didn't go inside any casinos.

I was there the night before and tons of people, like normal. It is weird to go back 12 hours later and see the difference. I agree with Sam- the Cabana Suites are awesome. Very nice rooms and very cheap.

I'd go ahead and stay downtown... I used to stay at the Nugget (Gold Club Suites) and really enjoyed the downtown ambiance. I LOVED the ability to walk from joint to joint, in a manner I could never do on the strip. I've visited by cab a couple times since and it just wasn't quite the same "enjoyment" knowing I'd have to pour myself into a cab and head back out at the end of the night (or early morning).

I've actually decided by reading this thread that it's time to try out these El Cortez cabana suites... I've simply heard/read too many good things not to give it a try. Downtown is very convenient for my business purposes and I'm gonna book my February trip there.

Yeah i gotta agree with augie on this one. I would do freemont st the first night or 2 then move to the strip. I did this on my 30th birthday in november. Stayed in the golden nugget thurs and fri then moved to the mgm for the weekend.
Downtown is definately fun and different vibe, but i will definately be spending at least one or 2 nights downtown on my trips from now on. You will probably end up paying more for rooms doing it this way but if you have the same mindset as me you are gonna prefer being on the strip on the weekend.
Also, as others have noted you are gonna be surprised how slow downtown is during the day, but it is fun to be able to sit it any bar and play VP wtih nobody bothering you or being able to grab a cheap table.

Hash House at the Plaza is as good as the strip location just not as crowded.

My opinion is that you should go ahead and stay downtown. The first time I brought my fiancee to Vegas we stayed at the Golden Gate for the first 2 nights before it was renovated. We then moved to the strip. He told me that he wished we would have stayed downtown the entire time. There is a totally different vibe. I personally like it during the day because there aren't many people and you can casino hop without it being crowded.

Downtown is a totally different experience. You should definitely try to split the trip between the strip and DT.

We were just at the plaza last week and loved the stay, the hash house is also as good as any other hash house I have ever been too. I agree at night go check out the bars in Fremont east. Always prefer downtown to the strip but it just depends what you are looking for.

When we travel with a few others we always split our trip between the Strip and downtown. If it is just my husband and myself we prefer to just stay downtown for all the obvious reasons, better gambling, closer casinos and cheaper drinks. We actually prefer to stay on the strip first and then move downtown, by then I am tired of the hustle and bustle of the strip and am ready for a little slower pace. Also I disagree about better rooms on the strip so stay downtown first or you will be disappointed. Very nice rooms can be had downtown and I never have had an issue with the quality of rooms. I am a huge downtown fan!

If you can get a good rate at plaza I wouldn`t hesitate.
the rooms are fine with very comfy beds and you can gamble elsewhere with everything being so close downtown

I also agree with el cortez,we have only stayed in the tower rooms but they were great.

This is exactly what I wanted to hear. I cannot wait to wander downtown during the day. I booked plaza on some deal right after thanksgiving...cheap and included a bottle of champagne. How are they on comps for craps/blackjack?.....usually $25 on blackjack and will have $34 plus odds on craps. I'm not too worried about being comped a $50 hotel room, but just curious. I've been downtown every time to vegas and cannot wait to spend the day exploring...def plan on hitting bars on fremont east that night. I've been wanting to go to insert coins since it opened.

They are pretty generous on comps for bj and craps. If you need a host, shoot me a pm. I have stayed at Plaza several times since the renovation and never paid for anything. Island Sushi is great so dont miss that or Oscars steakhouse. I have also stayed at the new suites across the street at El Cortez which is also nice. I just dont like the casino vibe at Elco...

The wife and I are in our late 30's and for me the strip is fun but when I go to Vegas I like to be downtown. I just enjoy more of the laid back friendly atmosphere that permeates the streets and casinos down there. When I am on the strip its usually for a day and right back DT to our hotel. Don't fret about the Plaza reviews, the place is really nice and we are treated very well there each time.

As for daytime DT, it really is a different vibe but there are few things I enjoy more than strolling down Fremont st mid morning and just enjoying the calm after some late nights gambling. There are a number of souvenir stores and plenty of restaraunts to check out, as well as a great outlet mall a few miles away. Do yourself a favor and stay a few nights DT, I think you will really enjoy it. Have fun!!
