My old dog has the worst gas, it'll clear a room. She's such a good girl, except for this one stinky problem. I have tried changing her diet to just high quality kibble (wouldn't eat it) and consulted with the vet (who said change her diet). She is a big dog, so when she lets one go it's a big problem. I'm gasping here! Does anyone know of a safe, doggy approved, food additive or such that I can try? Here's the offender:
did you try mixing in the food slowly with her old food. Sometimes they take to it better that way.plus I've heard an instant change of the diet isnt good for them. So you want to progressively change to the new food. do 3 days of 1/4 new food 3/4 old food do 3 days of 1/2 new food 1/2 old food do 3 days of 3/4 new food 1/4 old food then go to 100% of the new food. My dogs eat better than i do they get Natures Balance venison and sweet potato or duck and sweet potato. Its expensive but its a limited ingredient diet I have to do since my girl has food allergies.
Most store bought dog foods are full of junk. I make my own dog food and my dogs love it. I boil boneless chicken thighs with brown rice, run the thighs through the food processor, then mix in a bag of green beans. That simple. TFK
My late dog Lola could peel the paint off the walls. One time she woke herself up and grossed herself out with one of her own farts. I fed her a premium high protein food (lamb and brown rice) supplemented with lean meat, veg and yogurt. I followed my vet's advice and switched her to a chicken and brown rice food by the same brand. (takes almost a month to fully switch). She wasn't farting nearly as much. But, her poops weren't as formed, her coat looked terrible, no shine at all, she put on weight, went through more food and it didn't seem like it was filling her up. I switched her back to the lamb based food and put up with the farts. I would try plain yogurt, one with a lot of good bacteria. It can't hurt her.
My sisters 10 yr old short hair dachshund has always been really stinky and gassy. The 9 yr old long hair weiner dog I have has never let one fly around me. Not kidding. Never. Different foods, diets- still nothing. Guess I am lucky.
There are some ideas to work with here, so thanks everyone. I'm going to ask the vet about Beano, andI'll go get some probiotic yogurt - she likes yogurt anyway. I've been feeding her mostly home made meals mixed with kibble for a while now, since the dog food scare. In fact, she thinks a can of Alpo is a treat. But we ( read husband) could be partly to blame. Right now he's driving her to B'King for a burger. I'm not kidding. I do like the cat turd idea, but we sadly don't have cats anymore although I'm pining to get a new kitty. Can you see that on the adoption paperwork? Reason for adoption: so my dog can raid the litterbox
Cut the fat if you want to reduce farting. Certainly no Burger King. Watch the protein in an older dog, sometimes their liver's can't hack it.
My late dog ate a lot of cat turds, if it improved her farting situation she would have been absolutely lethal without the cat turds. You've had a lot of good ideas in here. If you start thinking about it from the perspective of a person with stomach issues, you might come up with something; lean protein, soluble fiber, oatmeal or brown rice instead of wheat or corn for carbs, fish and fish oils. I hope the OP finds something that works. I don't want to be a Debbie Downer but one day you're going to miss those farts.
We didn't have a problem until we changed dog food. Actually upgraded the dog food and that is when the bad smells started. So, it isn't just the food but rather a combination of food and dog. Sort of like people react differently to different food too.
I keep thinking of the scene from a movie (Which one ?) Where the guy farts a huge stinker w/ guests in the room - then kicks the dog - like the dog did it.nworthy: . Anybody remember what movie ?
Timely (and funny) post. My antique dog has been so gassy lately...yesterday I gave him a couple Tums, which he surprisingly chewed right up, and he slept the whole night without waking us all up with a silent, but deadly, and scary to him. Oh,and I call milkbones fart biscuits. They are bad!
Milkbones are fart biscuits? Crap, my dog loves those - she has them hidden all over the house. Time to go find them, I guess.
